Imphal, 08 November 2016 ( Evening News ) : The 46th Annual Conference of Indian Anthropological Society and an International Seminar on Anthropological Research in North East India: Retrospect and Prospect were held today at the Court hall of Manipur University. The event was organised by Department of Anthropology Manipur University in collaboration with Indian Anthropology Society Kolkatta, IGRMS, Bhopal and ASM Manipur. Speaking as chief guest on the occasion governor Dr. Najma Haptulla said north east India is often considered a mini India because of its social, cultural and linguistic diversity. She remarked that the small ethnic communities have undergone drastic changes in respect of their lifestyle both tangible and intangible owing to the deep impact of multidimensional factors. The governor said the various smaller communities of the region are facing the dilemma of ethnic identity. She also mentioned that lack of skills and infrastructure development, unemployment particularly among the educated youth also breed social problems. Dr Najma Heptulla observed that the region can be considered a hospot for understanding human issues and diversity. She hoped that the findings of the deliberations will be of great value to planning and policy making for the region. A souvenir of Indian Anthropological Society was also released on the 46th Annual Conference. TC Roy Choudhury memorial Award 2016 was presented to senior most Anthropologist of the north east Prof. AC Bhagabati. Henry Konjengbam who topped the physical Anthropology in 2015 was awarded Jyotirmoy Chakraborti Memorial Award 2016.
Imphal, 06 November 2016 ( Evening News ) : Miscreants exploded a bomb this morning in front of a shop at Uripok Haobam dewan Leikai on Uripok Kangchup road in Imphal West. No one was injured in the blast. Sources said a hand grenade exploded in front of a new shop which is yet to be opened this morning around 5 creating a hole in the ground. The shop belonged to RK Ongbi Bishobhanu. No one has claimed responsibility for the blast. The people of the area held a sit in against the incident.
Imphal, 05 November 2016 ( Evening News ) : In an attempt to create Guinness world Record, hearing aid and assistive devices were distributed to more than 6000 persons at an event held at Khuman Lampak indoor stadium today. Speaking at the occasion, Union Minister of Social Justice & Empowerment Thaawarchand Gehlot stated that the Government of India is taking steps to prepare Universal Identity Card for Differently Abled persons. He expressed the happiness that Manipur and India will be on the map of Guinness World Record after today's event. The union minister also said the Government of India has introduced a number of schemes for persons with hearing impairment and persons without limbs. He mentioned that Pre Matric and Post Matric scholarships are being provided to differently abled students. Thaawarchand Gehlot said free treatment is given to children below 5 years with hearing impairment.
Imphal, 04 Nov 2016 ( Evening News ) : At least 20 persons including one policeman were injured in violent protest as union minister for sports Vijay Goel and chief minister Okram Ibobi Singh visited the proposed site for sports university at Yaithibi Loukon. Union Minister of State for sports Vijay Goel along with Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh today visited Yaithibi Loukon - the site chosen by the state govt for the construction of the National Sports University. The inspection team arrived after 12:30 in the afternoon along with Chief Secretary O Nabakishore and Wangjing Tentha MLA T Brojen and other officials. As soon as the ministerial team arrived for inspection the locals began their agitation. As the protest turned violent police personnel fired tear gas shells and mock bombs to control the protesters. It was learnt that there were arguments between the central team and the state officials over the location, as the site is in a low lying area. The team also visited Koutruk another proposed site for the National Sports University.
Imphal, 03 November 2016 ( Evening News ) : Students of Imphal College have objected frequent change of principal of the college. The students today held a protest against the short duration of posting of principals in the college. This year the College had 4 different principals who served the college for two/three months. The students staged a sit-in against the government in front of the Administrative Block of the college at Kwakeithel. They displayed placards that read Don't politicise educational institutions, Appoint a regular principal of Imphal college. General Secretary of Imphal College Students Union, Wahengbam Anand said the govt frequently changed the principal of the college. He said the college had three different principals this year and yesterday the govt issued a notification in connection with the appointment of a new principal. Anand maintained that the frequent change of principals not only affect the students but the functioning of the college. He demanded a regular principal of the college by the 6th of this month. He also warned of intense agitation if their demand for a regular principal is not fulfilled by the govt.
Imphal, 02 November 2016 ( Evening News ) : In a shocking incident a 12-year student of St Joseph’s School, Andro has been allegedly molested by the Headmaster of the school today. The minor girl who is a student of class 7 stays in the Boarding of the school. The accused Headmaster has been identified as 45-year old Thokchom Bon, alias Ibungo, son of Th Gourasingh of Andro Bazaar. This was the 3rd time the principal exploited the girl sexually. People of the locality came out and thrashed the headmaster. Till the filing of this report there are no reports of police arriving at the scene. The school is located at Andro Kharam Leikai under Andro police station.
Imphal, 02 November 2016 ( Evening News ) : A house at Thangmeiband Hijam Dewan Leikai has been completely destroyed in a fire last night. The incident occurred around 9 pm. A shop run at the house was also destroyed and goods worth about Rs 30 lakh were destroyed in the fire. The house belonged to Keisham Jaminikanta while the shop was rented by Loitongbam Lemba. A fire tender arrived at the spot around 9.12 pm. Locals alleged that the fire tender came without water and the firemen was intoxicated. A resident of the area, Nepram Rajendro said the house was completely razed to the ground when the firemen were making preparations to fight the fire. Irate locals damaged a jeep of the fire service. A woman identified as Bimola told media that the occupants were not at home when the fire broke out. The fire was caused by an electrical short circuit.
Imphal, 02 November 2016 : Ningol Chakkouba was celebrated with traditional fervour and enthusiasm in Manipur. Since early morning married Manipuri women irrespective of age were seen going to their parental houses to celebrate the festival. Parents and brothers prepared special traditional dishes and eagerly waited for their daughters and sisters. Sharing of the food and presentation of gifts were the highlights of the celebration. It may be mentioned that every year the govt of Manipur holds fish fair every year on the eve of Ningol Chakkouba. This year the fish fair was held at THAU ground Thangmeiband. Ningol Chakkouba shoppers thronged the Khwairamband bazar and other markets in Imphal purchasing Ningol Chakkouba gifts for their daughters and sisters.
