Imphal, 02 April 2017 ( Evening News ) : Most of the major rivers in Imphal valley are running high following the incessant rain that lashed the state for the last fews days. The Imphal River, Nambul, Kongba and Iril rivers continue to run high even though they are yet to reach the danger mark. Many areas in Imphal and its adjoining areas experienced flash floods mainly caused by blockage of drains. Meanwhile sources at ICAR Lamphelpat said Manipur has so far recorded a 65 millimetre rainfall and predicted that it might rain in the next few coming days. Man made flood was seen in various places including Singjamei Kakwa Bazar, Singjamei Waikhom Leikai, Dobhi Machu Leirak, Lamphel, Sagolband Moirang Leirak, Ningomthong Sairom Leirak, Keishampat, Nongmeibung, Wangkhei Angom Leikai and Porompat and people have been suffering grievous inconveniences due to the flood.
Flood water has also inundated several areas in Thongju Part 1 and part 2 in Thongju Constituency. Thongju Unified Flood Fighting Committee formed jointly by 12 clubs was able to drain out the flood water by cleaning river Amanbi yesterday. It may be mentioned that River Amanbi is a tributary of River Chandranadi which flows through Singjamei Thongam Leikai, Kakwa and Thongju area. The people settled on the sides of the river have been dumping solid wastes into the river blocking it. Thongju Unified Flood Fighting Committee cleaned the river with the help of Thongju MLA and Works Minister Thongam Biswajit and Pradhan of Thongju Part 2.
Imphal, 01 April 2017 ( Evening News ) : Relief materials like rice and pulses are distributed to the flood victims in Kwakeithel Moirang Purel in Keishamthong Constituency, today. The flood occurred due to the rising level of Waishel maril. It may be mentioned that relief items have been distributed since yesterday to the flood victims of the locality under the supervision of Health and Family Welfare Minister L. Jayentankumar. Speaking to Impact News, a local O. Ibotomba accused the former MLA of the constituency of not taking construction works. He urged the present government to take necessary measures to help the people.
Imphal, 01 April 2017 ( Evening News ) : Farmers of Ishikha in Imphal east are devastated after their potato farms have been submerged under the flood water. The potato farms have been flooded by rain water. They are apprehensive that 40 to 45 percent of the yield from about 35 hectares of land will be damaged. They are worried that this year they will not be able to get previous year’s yield of 100 to 140 bags per acre. Farmers who earn their livelihood by cultivating potatoes are now even thinking of giving up potato farming. They had purchased the potato seeds at 1,300 to 1,500 rupees per bag during the economic blockade. They now fear that they will not be able to get back their investment. The farmers feel that if the Government and the departments concerned had taken steps to construct canals on time, they would not have suffered. The distressed farmers told Impact news that the Govt and the relevant departments must act in the earliest.
Imphal, 31 March 2017 : IFCD Minister, Letpao Haokip has assured that the govt will fight floods in the state by setting up Flood Control Teams to help the affected people. The Minister also stressed the role of Imphal Municipal corporation in maintaining the drainages in the city during rainy seasons. Speaking to Impact News at his office chamber at Secretariat, Letpao Haokip today assured that the government will take all necessary measures to help the flood affected people. He said a flood control team of IFCD has already begun cleaning of Waisel Maril using JCB and tipper. He also urged the people not to panic in such situation and asked them to dial 94-02-88-14-82 for help. He said 3 Flood Control Teams will be stationed in Porompat, Bazar Area and Lamphelpat to help the affected people and engineers will provide help using machinery. Haokip also stressed the responsibilities of the public in prevention of floods. He appealed to the people not to dump solid wastes in the drains to avoid blockage.
Imphal, 30 March 2017 ( Evening News ) : Two minor sisters were killed in an unfortunate road accident in Oinam bazar this morning. Both of them were hit by a bus. The two sisters who were class 2 students were returning home from school when the bus hit them near the Irengbam crossing in Oinam bazar in Bishnupur district around 11.30am. They died on the spot. The bus was coming from Imphal. The deceased girls are identified as Mutum Mani and Mutum Chitharembi daughters of Mutum Sanou Singh. They were students of Public School in Oinam.
Imphal, 30 March 2017 ( Evening News ) : Several areas in Imphal today experienced the first flood of the year after a heavy shower. A number of localities in Imphal city have been inundated by rain water causing serious inconveniences to the people. Many areas in the state experienced incessant rain last night. The movement of the people, especially the students who are appearing in the board and council examinations has been badly hit by the flash flood. A number of localities in Imphal including Uripok, Singjamei, Keishamthong, Sagolband and Lamphel were flooded by the rain water. Affected people allege that the flash floods were caused by lack of of proper drainage system in the area. A team of Impact news which covered the flood in different areas saw piles of solid wastes blocking the drains and poor quality of drains and retaining walls. About 100 metre stretch of National highway from Kakwa Asem Leikei to Waikhom Leikai in Langthabal Constituency remained under flood water causing serious inconveniences to the public.
Several areas along the Tiddim road also experienced flash floods. Many by-lanes in Sagolband and Keishamthong constituencies were inundated by rain water. The level of the Waishel Maril has become shallow due to dumping of solid wastes by the people and the authorities failure to clear the water body on time. Locals said they experience flood soon after a heavy shower as Waishel Maril has become vert shallow over the years. They also expressed the hope that the BJP government will take measures to solve the problem facing them.
Imphal, 28 March 2017 ( Evening News ) : People are making preparations for the celebration of the Sajibu Nongma Panba Cheiraoba. The Meitei community celebrate new year on Sajibu Nongma Panba with religious and traditional fervour and enthusiasm. Like in the previous years Cheiraoba shoppers thronged the Khwairamband bazaar since early morning to purchase seasonal fruits, vegetables, seasonal flowers and other items required for the celebration. Sources said the prices of all the items went up but the shoppers willingly paid for them without bargaining with the women vendors. Shoppers expressed their happiness and welcomed the new year. Meanwhile some vendors complained that the sale this year was not good.
Governor Dr Najma Heptulla has greeted the people of Manipur on the eve of the auspicious occasion of Sajibu Nongma Panba Cheiraoba. In her message the governor said new year is an occasion to rejoice and make new resolutions. She said " Let us strive together for a better Manipur setting apart our differences and working for a common goal."
Chief Minister Nongthombam Biren also greeted the people on the occasuion of Sajibu Nongma Panba Cheiraoba. In his message the chief minister hoped that the festival will bring joy, prosperity and peaceful coexistence among the people of Manipur.
Imphal, 28 March 2017 ( Evening News ) : For the first time after becoming the chief minister of Manipur, Nongthombam Biren yesterday called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi. He was accompanied by Works Minister Thongam Biswajit. N. Biren apprised the Prime Minister of various development projects in Manipur. During the meeting, the Centre agreed to grant Manipur Rs 140-150 crore very shortly for various development works. An additional amount of Rs 82 crore was given to Manipur for the current year. The Centre also agreed to continue the sharing pattern of 90:10 for Central Sponsored Schemes in Manipur. Construction of 4-lane NH 2 will start soon. A press release issued by directorate of information and public relations said mini secretariat proposal will be sent to Ministry of DoNER for their consideration. It also said construction of women’s market in all districts will be considered for NLCPR funding from Ministry of DoNER. The construction of 60 bedded Mental hospital will be approved by the Ministry of Health after appropriate proposal is sent. The Ministry of sports and ministry of power will also consider flood lighting of Khuman Lampak Sports Complex. Construction of Flyovers will be considered under the Smart City Project.
