Imphal, 01 April 2017 ( Evening News ) : Farmers of Ishikha in Imphal east are devastated after their potato farms have been submerged under the flood water. The potato farms have been flooded by rain water. They are apprehensive that 40 to 45 percent of the yield from about 35 hectares of land will be damaged. They are worried that this year they will not be able to get previous year’s yield of 100 to 140 bags per acre. Farmers who earn their livelihood by cultivating potatoes are now even thinking of giving up potato farming. They had purchased the potato seeds at 1,300 to 1,500 rupees per bag during the economic blockade. They now fear that they will not be able to get back their investment. The farmers feel that if the Government and the departments concerned had taken steps to construct canals on time, they would not have suffered. The distressed farmers told Impact news that the Govt and the relevant departments must act in the earliest.
