Manipur Government to Allot Land for Permanent NIT Manipur Campus

Imphal, August 4: Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand has announced that the Manipur Government will soon allot land for the establishment of a permanent campus for the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Manipur. He made the announcement while addressing the 13th Convocation of NIT Manipur at the City Convention Centre, Palace Compound. Describing NIT Manipur as an institution of national importance, the Chief Minister said the institute would play a crucial role in transforming Manipur into a developed and empowered state. He urged graduating students to contribute to the state's progress and actively participate in the vision of Viksit Bharat and Viksit Manipur by 2047. During the convocation, degrees were awarded to 299 students, including 206 B.Tech, 38 M.Tech, 24 M.Sc and 31 Ph.D graduates. Six meritorious students received the Institute Gold Medal and Chairman's Gold Medal in recognition of their outstanding academic achievements.

AMUCO Reaffirms Commitment to Manipur's Territorial Integrity on Integrity Day

Imphal, August 4: The All Manipur United Clubs' Organisation (AMUCO) today observed the 29th Manipur Integrity Day at Kwakeithel Akham Leikai Community Hall, commemorating the historic 1997 public movement to safeguard the territorial integrity of the state. Addressing the gathering, AMUCO President Sorokhaibam Sanjoy alleged that repeated actions by the Government of India have undermined Manipur's territorial integrity and encouraged divisions among communities. He further claimed that proxy armed groups have been allowed to prolong the conflict that began on May 3, 2023, resulting in hardships caused by repeated bandhs and blockades. He demanded the immediate removal of buffer zones separating communities and criticised policies he said weaken the rights and dignity of the people of Manipur. Reaffirming AMUCO's stand, Sanjoy urged citizens to remain united and continue democratic movements to protect the state's territorial integrity, adding that the organisation is prepared to intensify democratic agitations if required.

Students Stage Sit-in Demanding NRC Update Before Census

Imphal, August 4: Members of the Students' Wing of the Campaign for Just and Fair Delimitation (JFD) staged a sit-in protest outside Manipur University today, reiterating their demand for the updation of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) before the Census is conducted in the state. Protesters displayed placards reading "No IDP Settlement, No Census" and "NRC Updation Before Census." The students alleged that the government is moving ahead with the Census despite the prevailing situation in Manipur. They also demanded the proper resettlement and rehabilitation of internally displaced persons (IDPs) currently living in relief camps before the Census exercise begins. Warning of intensified agitation, the protesters said a larger student-led movement would be launched if the government proceeds with the Census without first updating the NRC.

Former MSPA Member Alleges Irregularities in Draft Electoral Roll

Imphal, August 4: Former Manipur State Planning Authority member Thoudam Jagat has alleged serious irregularities in the SIR 2026 Draft Electoral Roll and urged the Chief Electoral Officer to conduct an immediate review of the verification process. Addressing a press conference at the Manipur Press Club, Jagat claimed his team found discrepancies while examining draft electoral rolls for Tengnoupal, Kangpokpi and Saikul Assembly constituencies. He cited errors in names and spellings, overlapping house numbers, unclear identifiers and newly enrolled voters being listed under the "Others" relationship category. Jagat further alleged that the presence of electors without apparent linkage to the 2005 SIR Base Roll raises serious concerns. Stressing the importance of transparency, he warned that irregularities in the ongoing Special Intensive Revision process could have long-term implications for the state's electoral system.

Students Asked to Apply Early for Scholarships

Imphal, August 4: Director of the Department of Minority Affairs, OBC and SC, Yumnam Suraj, has urged eligible students to submit scholarship applications well before the deadline to ensure timely scrutiny and disbursement of funds. He made the appeal during the "Meet the Press" programme held at the DIPR Auditorium today. Suraj said online applications for the 2026-27 academic session under the National Scholarship Portal are open until September 30. He noted that the department is implementing several Central and State-sponsored schemes aimed at promoting education, skill development and socio-economic empowerment of OBC, SC and Minority communities. He also highlighted the completion of a 100-seat boys' hostel at Sainik School, Imphal, ongoing implementation of the PM-AJAY Scheme, the Economic Skill Development Programme, the Chief Minister's Lairik Heiminnasi Programme and infrastructure projects under the PMJVK Scheme.

MCPCR Orders Probe into Conditions at Residential School

Imphal, August 4: The Manipur Commission for Protection of Child Rights (MCPCR) has taken suo motu cognisance of reports alleging poor living conditions at Eklavya Model Residential School, Zeikhuluang Loktak Project, in Churachandpur district. According to the Commission, preliminary reports indicate an inadequate supply of food for resident students and staff, resulting in shortages of essential food items. Breakfast was reportedly not served on some days after food stocks were exhausted, while some students required medical treatment and others were taken home by parents over health concerns. MCPCR has directed the Deputy Commissioner of Churachandpur and the Director of Tribal Affairs and Hills to conduct an immediate inquiry, restore essential services, fix responsibility for any lapses and submit an Action Taken Report within 48 hours. Authorities have also been instructed to ensure adequate facilities before students return.

Security Forces Recover Large Cache of Weapons from Loktak Lake

Bishnupur, August 4: Security forces recovered a large cache of weapons and explosives from floating biomass (phumdi) near Sendra Hill in Loktak Lake under Moirang Police Station today. The recovered items included a .32 pistol, an SBBL gun, a .22 bolt-action rifle, a Jefferson rifle, nine locally made carbine firearms, two locally made MP-5 firearms, three Lathode guns, two Pompi guns, six IED packets and other accessories. Police said the recovery was made during a search operation as part of ongoing efforts to recover illegal arms and explosives from vulnerable areas. Further investigation is underway.

Arms and Explosives Seized in Kangpokpi Search Operation

Kangpokpi, August 4: Security forces recovered a huge cache of arms, ammunition and explosives during a cordon and search operation conducted in the Makokching jungle under Saikul Police Station yesterday. Among the recovered items were an M16 rifle, a Mark-3 rifle, a sniper rifle, a .22 bolt-action gun, 25 single-barrel guns, seven pistols, live ammunition, empty cartridge cases, rifle magazines, hand grenades, detonators, four Baofeng radio sets and other equipment. Officials said the recovery is part of sustained security operations aimed at preventing the circulation of illegal weapons in the state. Investigation into the ownership and source of the arms is continuing.

Police Arrest Man with Brown Sugar and Firearm

Imphal, August 4: Manipur Police arrested a 34-year-old man and seized more than 530 grams of suspected Brown Sugar along with a firearm and cash as part of the ongoing War on Drugs campaign. The accused, identified as Md. Firoz Alam of Moijing Leingoijil in Thoubal district, was allegedly found in possession of over 530 grams of Brown Sugar, a 12-bore pump-action gun, empty shotgun shells, a cartridge belt and cash amounting to ₹1.81 lakh. Police said the arrest forms part of intensified anti-narcotics operations across the state. Further investigation is underway.

Bomb Hurled at House in Imphal East, No Casualties

Imphal, August 4: Unidentified miscreants allegedly hurled a bomb at a residence in Khurai Sajor Leikai under Imphal East district late Monday night. No casualties or injuries were reported. The incident occurred at around 11:30 pm at the residence of Bachaspatimayum Anandini. According to sources, the explosive landed in an open bathroom within the compound before detonating. Police have launched an investigation to identify those responsible and ascertain the motive behind the attack.

Residents Protest Repeated Bomb Attacks in Khurai

Imphal, August 4: Local residents, along with the Chaithabi Leirak Women's Society and Chaithabi Leirak Development Club, staged a protest today condemning a series of bomb attacks in the locality. Women's Society President Takhelmayum Bimola alleged that bombs were first thrown near the Development Club on the night of August 1 and 2, followed by another explosion at the residence of Bachaspatimayum Anandini. Calling the repeated attacks unacceptable, she appealed to those responsible to resolve grievances through dialogue with local clubs and Meira Paibi groups instead of resorting to violence.

6th IRB Conducts Cleanliness Drive at Pangei

Imphal East, August 4: The 6th Indian Reserve Battalion conducted a cleanliness drive at Pangei Bazar today as part of its Community Outreach Programme and Rashtriya Ekta Diwas observance. The campaign was led by the Battalion Commandant in collaboration with volunteers from the Pangei Yangdong Youth Development Association, the Pangei Bazar Development Committee and women vendors of the market. Parliament Passes Births and Deaths Registration Amendment Bill

New Delhi, August 4: Parliament has passed the Registration of Births and Deaths (Amendment) Bill, 2026, after the Rajya Sabha approved the legislation today. The Lok Sabha had already passed the Bill. The amendment seeks to make delayed registration of births and deaths more stringent. Under the new provisions, registrations made between one and two years after the occurrence will require approval from the District Magistrate, Sub-Divisional Magistrate or an authorised Executive Magistrate following verification. Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai said India has made significant progress in civil registration, with birth registration exceeding 99 per cent in 2024 and death registration reaching 99.4 per cent.

Heavy Rainfall Warning Issued for Four Manipur Districts

Imphal, August 4: The India Meteorological Department's Meteorological Centre, Imphal, has issued a yellow alert for possible heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms in Tamenglong, Senapati, Ukhrul and Kamjong districts. The weather office has forecast rainfall across many parts of the state over the next two days. Residents in vulnerable areas have been advised to remain alert and take necessary precautions during periods of intense rainfall and thunderstorms.According to the ICAR Agromet Unit at Lamphelpat, Manipur received 3.2 mm of rainfall during the last 24 hours. The highest daytime temperature recorded was 28.2 degrees Celsius, while the minimum temperature was 23 degrees Celsius.
