Police Constable Suspended, Departmental Probe Ordered in Leilon Vaiphei Killing Case

Bishnupur, September 9: Police Constable Thangginlian Vaiphei, who was earlier stated in the Manipur Assembly to have been cleared by the NIA of involvement in the abduction and killing of six Naga civilians, has now been suspended and faces a departmental inquiry. Vaiphei, posted in Bishnupur district and attached to Kangpokpi Police, is currently serving at Leimakhong Police Station. Bishnupur SP Ksh. Ravikumar suspended him following a letter from the NIA Imphal Branch dated August 28. DIG S. Goutam has also ordered a departmental inquiry, appointing IPS officer Babitarani Swain as Inquiry Officer. The development comes amid renewed demands for justice from Naga organisations.

Joint Tribes Council Announces Boycott of CM’s Luangkao Visit

Tamenglong, September 9: The Working Committee of the Joint Tribes Council Manipur has announced a boycott of Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand’s proposed visit to Luangkao village on September 12. The Council said the visit, which includes a review of development projects and the Rani Gaidinliu Tribal Freedom Fighters Museum, should not proceed while justice remains pending in the case involving six Liangmai Naga men allegedly abducted and killed at Leilon Vaiphei village in May. The committee demanded that justice be delivered to the bereaved families first. It also appealed to Naga people and organisations to abstain from the programme and boycott official engagements that bypass collective consultation.

Assam Rifles Reviews Security Arrangements in Ukhrul and Kamjong

Ukhrul, September 9: Headquarters 10 Sector Assam Rifles conducted a review meeting on prevailing security arrangements in Ukhrul and Kamjong districts. The meeting focused on coordination among Lead Intelligence Agencies and other security stakeholders amid the existing security situation. It was chaired by the DIG of 10 Sector Assam Rifles and attended by the Ukhrul Deputy Commissioner, Superintendent of Police, officials from Police and Intelligence agencies, unit commanders and headquarters officials. The meeting provided a platform for reviewing the security situation and strengthening coordination among agencies operating in the two districts. The exercise is aimed at ensuring effective security management through closer cooperation among the various agencies.

State Closely Monitoring Probe Into Musician Chongtham Vikram’s Death

Imphal, September 9: Home Minister Govindas Konthoujam has said the Manipur Government is closely monitoring the investigation into the death of Manipuri musician Chongtham Vikram in Delhi. Speaking to the media after a BJP Manipur Pradesh meeting at Thambal Shanglen in Imphal, Govindas said the state government is exerting pressure to ensure justice. He said Delhi Police has arrested those allegedly involved in the incident and that communication is being maintained between Delhi Police and the Manipur Director General of Police. The Home Minister said the government, led by Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand, is taking steps to ensure justice in the case and is closely following the investigation.

Organisations Demand Impartial Probe Into Chongtham Vikram’s Death

Delhi, September 9: Six organisations have condemned the death of Manipuri musician and music teacher Chongtham Vikram following an alleged assault by an unruly mob in New Delhi on September 7. A joint meeting was held at the Centre for Equity Studies in Sarvodaya Enclave, attended by representatives of Manipur Students’ Association Delhi, Manipur International Youth Centre, People’s Progressive Alliance Manipur, Karwan-e-Mohabbat, North East India Support Centre and Helpline, and Human Rights Alert. The organisations demanded an impartial investigation into the incident, including the alleged racial motive. They also called for the arrest of all those involved and sought justice and compensation for Vikram’s family.

DMU PhD Scholars Begin Indefinite Hunger Strike Over Withheld Stipends

Imphal, September 9: Five PhD scholars of Dhanamanjuri University have launched an indefinite hunger strike demanding the release of their withheld stipends. The protest is being held in front of the University Administrative Block under the banner of the Dhanamanjuri University Students’ Union. Students’ Union General Secretary Oinam Keba said the scholars had repeatedly approached the authorities over the pending payments and were assured that the stipends would be released by the first week of September. With the deadline passing without any positive development, the scholars began the hunger strike. Keba also referred to the government’s recent Assembly statement that efforts were underway to arrange funds for payment of the pending stipends.

Lamsang MLA Urges Youth to Choose Sports Over Drugs

Imphal, September 9: Lamsang MLA Sorokhaibam Rajen has urged young people drifting towards drug addiction to turn to sports and contribute towards building a healthy society. Rajen and Second-in-Command of B/30 Battalion CRPF Mahendra jointly flagged off a 10-kilometre marathon under Khelo India at Sangaithel. The MLA said keeping young people away from intoxicating drugs is essential for building a healthy society and praised participants for choosing sports. Around 150 male runners from different hill and valley areas took part in the event. The marathon covered the route up to Luker Lamkhai before returning to Sangaithel. Winners received cash prizes, medals and certificates, while all participants were given certificates.

Karam Shyam Calls for Preservation of Nat Sankirtan Tradition

Imphal, September 9: Langthabal MLA Karam Shyam has urged the younger generation to preserve and carry forward Nat Sankirtan, warning that Manipur’s cultural identity could weaken if traditional practices are not protected. He was speaking at Chajing during a programme marking the death anniversary of renowned Meitei Pung exponent Guru Pukhrambam Natek. Three Arrested With 1.02 Kg Suspected Brown Sugar in Keikol

Imphal, September 9: Three persons have been arrested with 1 kilogram and 20 grams of suspected brown sugar during a joint anti-narcotics operation at Keikol. The operation was conducted by the Anti-Narcotics Task Force, Imphal East District Police, CRPF and YADAM. Police identified the arrested persons as 23-year-old Robin Thapa of T. Waichong, Irang Part-2, Naibet in Kangpokpi district; 33-year-old Sarju Chetry of Mile Nepali Basti in Karbi Anglong, Assam; and 38-year-old Padam Rai of Molkon Nepali Village, Makeng, Pangei Yangdong in Imphal East. A Honda Activa scooter and three mobile phones were also seized during the operation.

Two Arrested With 24 Grams of Heroin in Lilong

Thoubal, September 9: Lilong Police have arrested two persons in possession of 24 grams of suspected heroin powder. According to the police report, the arrested individuals have been identified as 22-year-old Md. Imtiyaz Khan and his elder brother, 36-year-old Md. Akbar. Both are residents of Lilong Uku, Lilong Keirak Mamang. The arrests were made as part of the ongoing efforts by police to curb the trafficking and distribution of illegal drugs in the area. The seized substance has been identified as heroin powder by police. Further legal proceedings are expected to follow as the authorities continue their investigation into the source and intended destination of the contraband.

AMTUC-AMGEO Suspends September 11 Silent Mass Rally

Imphal, September 9: The Joint Administrative Council of AMTUC and AMGEO has suspended its Silent Mass Rally scheduled for September 11, citing the prevailing situation in Manipur. JAC President Rajkumar Basumani announced the decision during a press meet at Babupara. He said the rally had been planned to protest the government’s alleged inaction on the organisation’s 10-point Charter of Demands concerning employees, workers, pensioners and family pensioners. Basumani said the government had agreed to declare Saturdays as holidays for employees and release the pending three per cent DA/DR, but alleged that no progress had been made on the remaining demands. He also raised concerns over around 50,000 vacant sanctioned government posts and their financial impact.

14 Meitei Pangal Organisations End Agitation Over Waqf Board Issue

Imphal, September 9: The Joint Committee Against the Inclusion of Non-Muslims in the 8th Waqf Board, formed by 14 Meitei Pangal organisations, has announced the end of its agitation from today. Speaking to the media at the MMWO office in Hatta, Committee Chairman Moulana Atao Rahaman said the agitation was launched demanding the removal of non-Muslim members from the Board. He welcomed the resignation of the two non-Muslim members who had been appointed to the 8th Waqf Board. The committee chairman said the development had helped resolve the issue and credited the government’s cooperation in addressing the concerns raised by the organisations. The decision brings the agitation to an end following the resignations.

BJP National President Nitin Nabin said Modi will complete 25 years in public life on October 7, marking the day he became Chief Minister of Gujarat in 2001. The campaign will begin with a blood donation camp and include the Seva Jyoti Kalash Yatra on October 7, connecting villages and urban areas. Seva Mera Yogdan programmes will continue until October 17. The nationwide campaign is expected to feature a range of public service activities and programmes marking the Prime Minister’s political journey.

CRPF Organises 10-Km Cycling Event Under SPANDAN

Imphal, September 9: A 10-kilometre cycling event was organised in Imphal under the CRPF’s Sports for Peace and Development Across the Nation, or SPANDAN, programme. The event was held under the aegis of the IG Manipur and Nagaland Sector CRPF. Padma Shri awardee N. Kunjarani and 86 Battalion CRPF Commandant Saurabh Kumar Chaoudhary flagged off the cycling event from Kangla Western Gate. The route passed through several key points, including the 1st MR junction, Keishampat Junction, Kwakeithel Bazaar, Imphal College and Little Flower School, before returning through Lok Bhawan Gate to Kangla Western Gate. CRPF officials later presented prizes to the winners and runner-up participants.

CRPF Organises 10-Km Marathons in Kangpokpi

Kangpokpi, September 9: The 94th Battalion CRPF organised two 10-kilometre marathons at Thomas Ground and G. Saparmeina in Kangpokpi district. The events were held under the aegis of the IG Manipur and Nagaland Sector CRPF. One marathon was flagged off from Saparmeina Petrol Pump and proceeded towards Leikop village before returning to the starting point. Another was flagged off from Thomas Ground and covered the route towards Kalapahar before returning to the venue. Around 500 marathoners participated in the two events. The sporting activities were organised as part of efforts to promote fitness and encourage participation in sports and community-oriented activities in the district.

Assam Rifles Provides Emergency Aid to Snakebite Victim in Churachandpur

Churachandpur, September 9: Assam Rifles provided emergency medical assistance to a 50-year-old farmer who suffered a snakebite while working in his field at Khuga in Churachandpur district. The farmer, a resident of Gangpimual village, was brought for immediate medical attention. An Assam Rifles medical team administered emergency treatment and stabilised his condition before referring him to Churachandpur District Hospital for further care. The timely intervention provided immediate assistance to the victim following the snakebite. Assam Rifles personnel have continued to undertake medical assistance and outreach activities in areas where access to immediate healthcare can be challenging, providing emergency support when required.

Assam Rifles Intensifies Anti-Dengue Fogging Drive in Churachandpur

Churachandpur, September 9: Assam Rifles has intensified preventive measures against dengue in Churachandpur district amid a rise in reported cases. Personnel conducted fogging and anti-mosquito spraying drives across several areas to help control mosquito breeding and reduce the risk of transmission. The preventive exercise covered Mata, New Lamka, Hiangtam Lamka, T. Phaizang, Saikot, Muolvaiphei and Buallian Khul. The initiative forms part of efforts to strengthen preventive measures against mosquito-borne diseases in the district. The fogging and spraying drives are intended to reduce mosquito populations and support local efforts to contain the spread of dengue, particularly in areas reporting an increase in cases.

Imphal, September 9: The India Meteorological Department’s Imphal Centre has forecast rain at several places across Manipur today and tomorrow. Widespread rainfall is expected in Jiribam, Noney and Pherzawl, while isolated rain is likely in Tamenglong, Senapati, Kangpokpi, Imphal West, Imphal East, Ukhrul, Kamjong, Bishnupur, Thoubal, Kakching, Tengnoupal, Chandel and Churachandpur districts. For tomorrow, showers are likely at a few places in Tamenglong, Senapati, Ukhrul, Kamjong and Tengnoupal, with isolated rainfall expected in several other districts. The ICAR Agrometeorological Unit at Lamphelpat recorded a maximum temperature of 30 degrees Celsius and a minimum of 22 degrees Celsius today.

Manipur Retain Dr. BC Roy Junior Boys National Football Championship

Bengaluru, September 9: Defending champions Manipur retained the 55th Dr. BC Roy Junior Boys National Football Championship after defeating West Bengal 3-1 in the final at Bengaluru Football Stadium. Heikrujam Jogesh opened the scoring for Manipur in the 26th minute, followed by Thiyam Jenson’s goal in the 39th minute. West Bengal’s Debraj Das scored in the 52nd minute, but Manipur sealed victory with Muskan’s goal in the 88th minute. The championship was organised by the All India Football Federation and featured 16 teams divided into four groups. Manipur’s squad consisted of 20 players, supported by manager MD Zane Khan, head coach K. Donald, assistant coach Javed Aktar and physiotherapist B. Sobikash.

Nepram Roshan Wins Two Overall Titles at INBA Natural Universe 2026

Singapore, September 9: Manipur bodybuilder Nepram Roshan has won the overall championship titles in both Bodybuilding and Classic Men’s Physique at the INBA Natural Universe Bodybuilding 2026 in Singapore. Roshan represented India at the championship, organised by the International Natural Bodybuilding Association at the Singapore Airlines Theatre on September 5 and 6. Athletes from around 30 countries participated in the competition. Roshan also secured the Pro-Elite Card, becoming the first person from Manipur to achieve the two overall titles and the card at the event. He was trained under KBB Gym Tera head coach Sapam Joychandra. Family members and KBB Gym Tera members welcomed Roshan at Imphal International Airport following his return.

Third DGAR Hockey Cup to Begin in Imphal on September 18

Imphal, September 9: The third edition of the DGAR Hockey Cup will be held at Khuman Lampak Hockey Stadium in Imphal from September 18 to 28. The tournament was officially announced by 31st Assam Rifles Commandant DS Lamba and Manipur Hockey Vice President LCK Singh during a press conference at the 31st Assam Rifles Post, Pishum Chinga. Commandant Lamba highlighted Manipur’s reputation as a powerhouse of sports and said the tournament would provide young players with an opportunity to showcase their talents. He added that the event aims to promote hockey and the values of peace and unity. Teams from neighbouring Assam and the Corps of Signals are expected to participate.

DGAR Hockey Cup Recognised on Hockey India Calendar

Imphal, September 9: The third DGAR Hockey Cup has been recognised as a calendar event of Hockey India, organisers announced. Manipur Hockey Vice President LCK Singh said the tournament would provide a platform for young sportspersons to develop their skills and encouraged greater participation in sporting activities. The Cup will also become a rolling trophy from this year onwards. So far, 10 men’s teams and five women’s teams have confirmed participation, while organisers expect more teams to apply. The winners will receive a cash prize of Rs 1 lakh along with the trophy, while the runners-up will receive Rs 75,000. The tournament is scheduled from September 18 to 28 at Khuman Lampak Hockey Stadium.

Oinam Kangkhut Enter First Semi-Final of Sinam Nodiachand Memorial Tournament

Imphal, September 9: Oinam Kangkhut have advanced to the first semi-final of the First Sinam Nodiachand Memorial Invitation League-cum-Knockout Kang Tournament. The tournament is being organised by Laijing Ningthou Apunba Kangkhut Thangmeiband with funding support from the Sinam Nodiachand Memorial Foundation, Thangmeiband Sinam Leikai. In the fourth quarter-final played today, Oinam Kangkhut defeated LAK Thangmeiband Team A Kangkhut 19-14. With the victory, Oinam Kangkhut will face Khundrakpam Team B Kangkhut in the first semi-final. The semi-final match is scheduled to be played on September 12. The tournament brings together Kang teams in a competitive league-cum-knockout format.
