Manipur Government to Allot Land for Permanent NIT Manipur Campus

Imphal, August 4: Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand has announced that the Manipur Government will soon allot land for the establishment of a permanent campus for the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Manipur. He made the announcement while addressing the 13th Convocation of NIT Manipur at the City Convention Centre, Palace Compound. Describing NIT Manipur as an institution of national importance, the Chief Minister said the institute would play a crucial role in transforming Manipur into a developed and empowered state. He urged graduating students to contribute to the state's progress and actively participate in the vision of Viksit Bharat and Viksit Manipur by 2047. During the convocation, degrees were awarded to 299 students, including 206 B.Tech, 38 M.Tech, 24 M.Sc and 31 Ph.D graduates. Six meritorious students received the Institute Gold Medal and Chairman's Gold Medal in recognition of their outstanding academic achievements.

Imphal, August 4: The Manipur Commission for Protection of Child Rights (MCPCR) has taken suo motu cognisance of reports alleging poor living conditions at Eklavya Model Residential School, Zeikhuluang Loktak Project, in Churachandpur district. According to the Commission, preliminary reports indicate an inadequate supply of food for resident students and staff, resulting in shortages of essential food items. Breakfast was reportedly not served on some days after food stocks were exhausted, while some students required medical treatment and others were taken home by parents over health concerns. MCPCR has directed the Deputy Commissioner of Churachandpur and the Director of Tribal Affairs and Hills to conduct an immediate inquiry, restore essential services, fix responsibility for any lapses and submit an Action Taken Report within 48 hours. Authorities have also been instructed to ensure adequate facilities before students return.

Security Forces Recover Large Cache of Weapons from Loktak Lake

Bishnupur, August 4: Security forces recovered a large cache of weapons and explosives from floating biomass (phumdi) near Sendra Hill in Loktak Lake under Moirang Police Station today. The recovered items included a .32 pistol, an SBBL gun, a .22 bolt-action rifle, a Jefferson rifle, nine locally made carbine firearms, two locally made MP-5 firearms, three Lathode guns, two Pompi guns, six IED packets and other accessories. Police said the recovery was made during a search operation as part of ongoing efforts to recover illegal arms and explosives from vulnerable areas. Further investigation is underway.

Arms and Explosives Seized in Kangpokpi Search Operation

Kangpokpi, August 4: Security forces recovered a huge cache of arms, ammunition and explosives during a cordon and search operation conducted in the Makokching jungle under Saikul Police Station yesterday. Among the recovered items were an M16 rifle, a Mark-3 rifle, a sniper rifle, a .22 bolt-action gun, 25 single-barrel guns, seven pistols, live ammunition, empty cartridge cases, rifle magazines, hand grenades, detonators, four Baofeng radio sets and other equipment. Officials said the recovery is part of sustained security operations aimed at preventing the circulation of illegal weapons in the state. Investigation into the ownership and source of the arms is continuing.

Police Arrest Man with Brown Sugar and Firearm

Imphal, August 4: Manipur Police arrested a 34-year-old man and seized more than 530 grams of suspected Brown Sugar along with a firearm and cash as part of the ongoing War on Drugs campaign. The accused, identified as Md. Firoz Alam of Moijing Leingoijil in Thoubal district, was allegedly found in possession of over 530 grams of Brown Sugar, a 12-bore pump-action gun, empty shotgun shells, a cartridge belt and cash amounting to ₹1.81 lakh. Police said the arrest forms part of intensified anti-narcotics operations across the state. Further investigation is underway.

Bomb Hurled at House in Imphal East, No Casualties

Imphal, August 4: Unidentified miscreants allegedly hurled a bomb at a residence in Khurai Sajor Leikai under Imphal East district late Monday night. No casualties or injuries were reported. The incident occurred at around 11:30 pm at the residence of Bachaspatimayum Anandini. According to sources, the explosive landed in an open bathroom within the compound before detonating. Police have launched an investigation to identify those responsible and ascertain the motive behind the attack.

Parliament Passes Births and Deaths Registration Amendment Bill

New Delhi, August 4: Parliament has passed the Registration of Births and Deaths (Amendment) Bill, 2026, after the Rajya Sabha approved the legislation today. The Lok Sabha had already passed the Bill. The amendment seeks to make delayed registration of births and deaths more stringent. Under the new provisions, registrations made between one and two years after the occurrence will require approval from the District Magistrate, Sub-Divisional Magistrate or an authorised Executive Magistrate following verification. Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai said India has made significant progress in civil registration, with birth registration exceeding 99 per cent in 2024 and death registration reaching 99.4 per cent.

Heavy Rainfall Warning Issued for Four Manipur Districts

Imphal, August 4: The India Meteorological Department's Meteorological Centre, Imphal, has issued a yellow alert for possible heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms in Tamenglong, Senapati, Ukhrul and Kamjong districts. The weather office has forecast rainfall across many parts of the state over the next two days. Residents in vulnerable areas have been advised to remain alert and take necessary precautions during periods of intense rainfall and thunderstorms.According to the ICAR Agromet Unit at Lamphelpat, Manipur received 3.2 mm of rainfall during the last 24 hours. The highest daytime temperature recorded was 28.2 degrees Celsius, while the minimum temperature was 23 degrees Celsius.

Union Tourism Minister to Visit Manipur for Two-Day Review

AITUC Warns of Agitation Against Airtel Over Employees' Wage Demands

Imphal, Aug. 3: The All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) has warned of intensifying its agitation against Airtel, including disrupting the company's services in Manipur from September 15, if employees' demands remain unresolved. Addressing the media at the Manipur Press Club, AITUC General Secretary Laishram Sotinkumar alleged that Airtel workers in the state receive only ₹6,500 per month and demanded that the monthly honorarium be increased to ₹14,000. He said the union has repeatedly raised issues related to wages and employee welfare with the company. Sotinkumar claimed that the Airtel Shillong Regional Office had earlier assured the union that the demands would be discussed. However, he warned that if no meeting is held by September 15, the union and employees will intensify their agitation, including suspending Airtel services across Manipur until their grievances are addressed.

Alleged KCP (Apunba) Cadre Arrested in Imphal East

Imphal, Aug. 3: Security forces have arrested an alleged active cadre of the banned KCP (Apunba) outfit from Imphal East district in connection with alleged extortion activities. According to security sources, the accused has been identified as Joyson Khangembam, also known by the aliases Loyumba and Tondonba, aged 28. He was arrested from Khongman Zone V East under the jurisdiction of Irilbung Police Station during a security operation. Police alleged that the accused was actively involved in extortion-related activities in the area. Authorities said further investigation is underway to ascertain his alleged network and involvement in other unlawful activities. Security forces have continued intensified operations across the state as part of efforts to curb extortion and insurgent activities.

Imphal, Aug. 3: Security forces have arrested an alleged active cadre of KCP (MFL) from Imphal East district and recovered firearms and ammunition from his possession. The accused has been identified as Lourembam Robinson, also known as Benin, aged 44. He was apprehended from Nongada Thongkhong under Lamlai Police Station during a security operation. According to security sources, police recovered two .32 calibre pistols, two magazines and nine rounds of live ammunition from his possession. Authorities alleged that Robinson was involved in the illegal possession, concealment and transportation of arms and ammunition. The arrest forms part of the ongoing crackdown against illegal arms and insurgent activities in the state. Further investigation is underway to establish links with other unlawful activities.

Man Arrested with Over 13 Kilograms of Opium in Churachandpur

Imphal, Aug. 3: Security forces have arrested a man and seized more than 13 kilograms of opium during a raid in Churachandpur district. According to police, the accused has been identified as Seikhogin Mate, 43, a resident of T. Khuangkhai Village under Sangaikot Sub-Division. He was arrested after security personnel conducted a search operation at his residence. Police said approximately 13 kilograms and 230 grams of opium were recovered during the raid. The accused has been taken into custody, and legal proceedings have been initiated under relevant provisions of the law. The seizure is part of the continuing anti-narcotics drive being carried out across Manipur to curb the cultivation, trafficking and illegal possession of narcotic substances.

Chandel, Aug. 3: Naga civil society organisations on Sunday observed the 11th anniversary of the Indo-Naga Framework Agreement at Chandel district headquarters, reiterating their demand for the early implementation of the 2015 accord. Imphal, Aug. 3: Deputy Chief Minister Losii Dikho has laid the foundation stone for the Rani Gaidinliu Girls' Hostel at Katraj in Pune, Maharashtra. The hostel, estimated to cost ₹10 crore, is being developed by a Maharashtra-based NGO under the name Late Srimati Jamnabai Firodia North East India Bhavan – Rani Gaidinliu Girls' Hostel. It aims to provide accommodation for girls from the Northeast, particularly students from Manipur. The foundation-laying ceremony was attended by Force Motors Chairman Abhay Firodia and several representatives from Manipur. Noney Launches Campaign Against Child Labour

Noney, Aug. 3: A district-wide rescue and rehabilitation campaign against child labour was launched in Noney under Mission Vatsalya as part of the World Day Against Child Labour observance. Deputy Commissioner Vidyamari Sridhar, who also chairs the District Task Force on Child Labour, officially launched the campaign organised by the District Child Protection Unit (DCPU), Noney. A child labour awareness poster campaign was also inaugurated to educate the public about the harmful effects of child labour and the importance of protecting children's rights. Authorities said the campaign will focus on awareness, rescue operations and rehabilitation measures for affected children.

IMD Issues Yellow Warning as Rainfall Continues Across Manipur

Imphal, Aug. 3: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast continued rainfall across Manipur over the next two days and issued a Yellow Warning for heavy rain at isolated places. Widespread rainfall is expected in Tamenglong, Senapati, Ukhrul, Kamjong, Tengnoupal and Chandel districts, while isolated rainfall is likely in Kangpokpi, Imphal East, Imphal West, Jiribam, Noney, Bishnupur, Thoubal, Kakching and Churachandpur. The ICAR Agrometeorological Unit at Lamphelpat recorded the day's maximum temperature at 31°C and the minimum at 23.5°C. Residents have been advised to remain alert in areas vulnerable to heavy rainfall.

Manipur Athletes Shine as India Finishes Fourth at Commonwealth Games

Imphal, Aug. 3: Manipur's athletes delivered an impressive performance at the 23rd Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, helping India finish fourth in the overall medal standings. India secured 13 gold, 17 silver and 9 bronze medals, while Australia topped the medal table. Eleven athletes from Manipur represented the country. In weightlifting, Saikhom Mirabai Chanu won gold, Chanambam Rishikanta claimed silver and Sorokhaibam Bindyarani secured bronze. Boxer Mandengbam Jadumani also won a silver medal. The Games were held from July 23 to August 2 with participation from nearly 3,000 athletes representing 74 countries and territories. The next Commonwealth Games will be hosted by India in Ahmedabad in 2030.

Imphal East Crowned Overall Champions at Governor's Cup Fencing Championship

Imphal, Aug. 3: Imphal East emerged as the overall champion at the 22nd Governor's Cup State-Level Fencing Championship held at Khuman Lampak Sports Complex. The district topped the medal tally with 25 gold, 21 silver and 32 bronze medals, finishing ahead of Imphal West, Chandel, Bishnupur and Ukhrul. A total of 273 fencers from eight districts competed in the championship. Winners received prizes during the closing ceremony attended by officials of the Manipur Olympic Association, Manipur Fencing Association and other dignitaries.

CM Launches Nasha Mukt Yuva Campaign, Urges Youth to Build Drug-Free India

Imphal, Aug. 2: The nationwide "Nasha Mukt Yuva for Vikshit Bharat Sankalp Abhiyan" was launched in Manipur today with Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand calling upon the youth to stay away from drugs and actively contribute towards building a developed India by 2047. The state-level programme was held at the Auditorium of Manipur University and organised by the NSS Cell, Manipur University, in collaboration with the State NSS Cell under the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports. Addressing students and faculty members, the Chief Minister said the vision of Vikshit Bharat 2047 can only be realised through the active participation of young people. He stressed that drug abuse remains one of the biggest challenges facing Manipur and urged collective efforts to eradicate the menace. Railway to Reach Imphal by December 2028, Says Chief Minister

Imphal, Aug. 2: Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand today announced that the government is working to bring the railway network to Imphal by December 2028, after which the line will be extended to Moreh along the Indo-Myanmar border. Speaking at the launch of the Nasha Mukt Yuva for Vikshit Bharat Sankalp Abhiyan at Manipur University, the Chief Minister said the railway project would significantly improve connectivity and strengthen Manipur's role as India's gateway to Southeast Asia. He said the extension to Moreh would enhance trade and regional cooperation under the country's Act East Policy. However, Khemchand cautioned that improved connectivity also requires stronger vigilance against cross-border drug trafficking. He urged young people to support the government's fight against drugs and help ensure that the benefits of improved infrastructure are not undermined by illegal activities. The programme was attended by Manipur University Vice-Chancellor R.K. Hemakumar, faculty members and students.

Additional Commandos to Be Deployed Along NH-37 to Check Extortion

Imphal, Aug. 2: Home Minister Govindas Konthoujam today said the Manipur Government will deploy additional State Commando units along National Highway-37 to curb illegal extortion targeting vehicles transporting essential commodities. Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the Gen-Z Against Addiction – Nasha Mukt Yuva Pledge Ceremony at Standard College, Kongba, the Minister said the decision follows concerns raised by transporters over alleged illegal taxation by armed groups operating along the highway. He informed that authorities have launched an investigation into a viral social media video purportedly showing extortionists collecting money from transporters. Govindas said the government has reached an understanding with transporters' associations on key issues, including enhanced security for goods vehicles and stronger deployment of security personnel along vulnerable stretches of the highway. He reiterated the government's commitment to ensuring uninterrupted movement of essential supplies into the state.

Manipur Police Strengthen NH-37 Security; Fuel Tankers to Resume Movement

Imphal, Aug. 2: Manipur Police has introduced a fresh set of security measures to ensure the safe movement of convoys and petroleum products along National Highway-37. According to an order issued by the Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order), the Inspector General of Police (Zone-III) has been designated as the Nodal Officer to oversee convoy security and coordinate with all stakeholders. District police have been directed to strictly implement Standard Operating Procedures, conduct special drives against extortion and intensify public awareness campaigns against supporting unlawful activities. The order also calls for close coordination among the State Police, Central Armed Police Forces, Assam Rifles and the Army to ensure smooth convoy movement. Dedicated security teams will be deployed at vulnerable stretches of the highway. Meanwhile, the Manipur Petroleum Products Transporters' Association (MPPTA) announced that fuel tanker movement along NH-37 will resume from Monday.

DGP Reviews Law and Order, Calls for Intelligence-Based Policing

Imphal, Aug. 2: Director General of Police (DGP) Mukesh Singh today reviewed the prevailing law and order situation in Imphal West during a meeting with police officers at the Office of the Superintendent of Police. During the review, the Imphal West SP briefed the DGP on crime trends, policing initiatives and the overall security situation in the district. Stressing the need for proactive and intelligence-based policing, Mukesh Singh directed officers to ensure prompt and professional investigation of criminal cases, particularly those related to narcotic drugs, extortion and illegal arms. Fourteen CSOs Warn of Statewide Shutdown Over Delay in NRC Updation

Imphal, Aug. 2: Fourteen civil society organisations under the banner of 14 CSOs of Kangleipak have warned the Manipur Government that they will enforce a statewide total shutdown from midnight of August 9 if the government fails to expedite action on their agreed demands, including the updation of the National Register of Citizens (NRC), by August 8. The warning was issued during a press conference held at the IPSA Office in Keishampat. Convenor Santa Nahakpam said representatives of the organisations recently met senior leaders of the Central Government in New Delhi and later held discussions with officials of the Manipur Home Department. According to the CSOs, the Home Department had assured them that a public consultation involving all stakeholders on the NRC issue would be held during the first week of August. Alleging that no concrete steps have been taken so far, the organisations urged the government to immediately initiate the promised process or face the proposed statewide shutdown.

MMTU Alleges Attempt to Include Illegal Immigrants in Census

Imphal, Aug. 2: The Meetei-Meitei Tribe Union (MMTU) has accused the Centre and the Manipur Government of attempting to include illegal immigrants residing in the state in the ongoing census process. In a statement issued today, the organisation alleged that the governments were trying to facilitate the settlement of illegal immigrants instead of taking steps to identify and deport them. MMTU claimed that despite repeated demands from indigenous communities, the authorities have failed to initiate effective measures to detect and remove illegal immigrants from the state. The organisation expressed concern that such actions could adversely affect the demographic balance and interests of the indigenous population. Reiterating its demand, MMTU urged both the Centre and the State Government to take immediate steps to identify, detect and deport illegal immigrants while safeguarding the rights and interests of the indigenous people of Manipur.

Congress Alleges BJP Ignoring Muslim Community in Ministerial Representation

Imphal, Aug. 2: Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) General Secretary P. Saratchandra has alleged that the BJP-led governments at the Centre and in Manipur have sidelined the minority Muslim community by not appointing any elected Muslim representative as a Minister. Addressing a Minority Leaders' Meet organised by the Heingang Block Congress Committee at Kairang Muslim, Saratchandra claimed that despite Muslims constituting around 17 per cent of India's population, no elected Muslim representative has been included in the Union Council of Ministers under the BJP-led Central Government. Referring to Manipur, he alleged that repeated demands for appointing a Muslim MLA as a Cabinet Minister have been ignored, even though representatives from other communities have been accommodated. Saratchandra contrasted the BJP's approach with previous Congress governments, claiming they ensured inclusive representation. Newly inducted Congress members were also welcomed into the party during the programme.

Shiv Sena Demands NRC Updation Before Next Elections

Imphal, Aug. 2: Shiv Sena Manipur Pradesh President M. Tombi has urged the NDA leadership to complete the updation of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Manipur before the next elections. Addressing a press conference at the party's state office in Babupara, Tombi said he met Shiv Sena National President Eknath Shinde and other party leaders in New Delhi on July 28 to press the demand. He said discussions also covered the upcoming Local Body and Manipur Assembly elections, including the possibility of Shiv Sena contesting seats in alliance with NDA partners. Tombi informed that the party submitted a memorandum to the Prime Minister through Eknath Shinde seeking free movement along Manipur's National Highways, creation of a Highway Protection Force to safeguard transport routes, and identification of illegal immigrants. Chief Justice Stresses Timely Access to Justice at Legal Aid Programme

Sundar, today emphasised that justice delayed cannot be considered true justice and said timely access to justice is a fundamental constitutional principle. He was speaking at a one-day Capacity Building Programme for Legal Aid Defence Counsels, Panel Lawyers and Remand Lawyers organised by the Manipur State Legal Services Authority (MASLSA) at the High Court of Manipur. Justice Sundar highlighted that Article 39A of the Constitution obligates the State to provide free legal aid so that no individual is denied justice due to financial or social disadvantages. He urged legal aid counsels and advocates to uphold this constitutional responsibility with commitment and professionalism. The programme also featured lectures by Justice A. Pony Organisations Raise Alarm as Manipuri Pony Population Drops Below 1,000

Dhanachandra alleged that pony theft and the illegal trade in pony meat are the primary reasons behind the decline. IRB Recruitment Candidates Protest Delay in Declaration of Results

Imphal, Aug. 2: Candidates who appeared for the recruitment examination of the 10th and 11th India Reserve Battalion (IRB) MR Jemadar posts staged a sit-in protest at Keishampat Leimajam Leikai today, demanding immediate declaration of the examination results. Holding placards, the protesters expressed frustration over the prolonged delay in completing the recruitment process. According to the candidates, the physical efficiency test was conducted in 2019, followed by the written examination in 2020, but the final results have not been announced even after more than seven years. One of the candidates, Robertson Chingtham, said the recruitment process was originally expected to be completed within three months. He alleged that repeated appeals to the authorities have gone unanswered and urged the government to declare the results without further delay to end the uncertainty faced by the candidates.
