State Cabinet Approves Government Medical College at Senapati

Senapati, September 3: The Manipur State Cabinet has given in-principle approval for setting up a Government Medical College at Senapati. The proposed institution will have an annual intake of 100 MBBS students, while the existing district hospital will be upgraded to meet the requirements of the medical college. The Cabinet also approved enhanced cash incentives for Manipur’s medal winners and participants in the Commonwealth Games and Asian Games. For the 2026 Commonwealth Games, the incentive has been fixed at Rs. 20 lakh for gold, Rs. 15 lakh for silver, Rs. 10 lakh for bronze and Rs. 4 lakh for participants. Several other decisions concerning sports, transport and development were also taken.

Government Defends NIT Manipur Land Decision

Imphal, September 3: Manipur Government spokesperson Thokchom Radheshyam has rejected Congress allegations that Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand was unaware of land allotted for the permanent campus of NIT Manipur at Lamphel. Speaking at Sanjenthong, Radheshyam said the earlier 300-acre site was found to be highly marshy and unsuitable for construction. He said extensive piling and specialised foundation work would have pushed up the project cost beyond the sanctioned amount, resulting in cancellation of funding. Radheshyam maintained that the government remains committed to NIT Manipur and is working to identify a suitable alternative site for its permanent campus.

Kuki Community Lifts Blockade on Imphal-Ukhrul Road

Ukhrul, September 3: The Kuki community has lifted the Counter Economic Blockade and Total Shutdown imposed along the Imphal-Ukhrul road following talks with a government delegation. Home Minister Govindas Konthoujam led the delegation to Sangkai Kuki, where government representatives met leaders of the Kuki CSO Working Committee and KSO Ukhrul. The government assured the community that necessary measures would be taken to ensure safe and free movement along the road. An MoU was signed between the two sides, following which the KSO Ukhrul announced withdrawal of the agitation from 4:30 pm. Around 450 goods vehicles stranded near Litan Police Station and other locations subsequently resumed movement towards Imphal under security escort.

CM, Home Minister Meet Governor Amid Census Row

RPI-Athawale to Contest 2027 Manipur Assembly Polls

MSPDCL Says 70,000 Smart Meters Installed

Speaking at a Meet the Press programme at the DIPR Auditorium, Rabi clarified that smart meters do not generate higher bills than the earlier prepaid meters. He urged consumers with complaints to submit written grievances to MSPDCL. According to Rabi, the new meters can help monitor electricity consumption and detect power theft. He also highlighted the Cabinet’s approval to procure 100 MW of power from Farrakka Thermal Power Plant in West Bengal and a proposal to procure another 50 MW from renewable sources.

Chandel Residents Oppose Proposed Indo-Myanmar Border Demarcation

Chandel, September 3: A mass rally was held at Khengjang and Molcham villages in Chandel district opposing the proposed Indo-Myanmar border demarcation in the Khengjoi sector. The rally was organised under the aegis of affected border-area Kuki chiefs, who objected to the proposed realignment of boundary pillars in the area. Organisers claimed that the proposed alignment between Boundary Pillars 65 and 68 does not correspond with the existing ground position traditionally occupied by local residents. Arms and Ammunition Recovered in Kakching

Kakching, September 3: Security forces recovered a cache of arms, ammunition and military stores during a search operation in the Wabagai Turenmamei area under Hiyanglam Police Station. The recovery included one .303 rifle, one 9mm pistol, three single-barrel guns, three carbines and one 51mm mortar bomb. Security personnel also recovered three tube-launching devices, two hand grenades and 18 live rounds of ammunition. Other items seized included an INSAS bayonet, bulletproof plates and covers, communication sets and military fatigues. The operation forms part of continuing security efforts to recover illegal weapons and military stores from vulnerable areas of Manipur.

Two Arrested With Suspected Heroin in Bishnupur

Bishnupur, September 3: Bishnupur District Police and Central security forces, with assistance from Churachandpur District Police, intercepted a Scorpio vehicle travelling from Churachandpur towards Imphal. During a search of the vehicle, security personnel recovered nine soap cases containing 96 grams of suspected heroin. Two persons, identified as 29-year-old Md. Abdur Rahaman and 24-year-old Md. Saruk Khan, were arrested in connection with the seizure. Police also confiscated two mobile phones and the vehicle used for transporting the suspected contraband. Further investigation is underway to establish the source and intended destination of the seized substance and determine whether others were involved.

CRPF Director General Concludes Manipur Visit

Woman’s Decomposed Body Recovered From Wangjing River

Thoubal, September 3: A decomposed body of a woman was recovered from the Wangjing River at Lamding Laikol under Thoubal Police Station. The deceased was identified as 60-year-old Khundongbam Bidhumakhi, daughter of late Khundongbam Paibi of Heirok Part II Mayai Leikai. According to her family, Bidhumakhi had been missing since July 22, with a missing person report filed at Heirok Police Station on July 24. Police and forensic experts conducted a detailed inspection of the site before taking the body into custody. Parliament Passes Taxation and Other Laws Amendment Bill

New Delhi, September 3: Parliament has passed the Taxation and Other Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2026 after the Rajya Sabha returned the Money Bill to the Lok Sabha following discussion. Replying to the debate in the Rajya Sabha, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman clarified that the legislation does not impose any tax or transaction charge on UPI users. She said digital payments would continue to remain free for consumers. Colombia, September 3: The death toll from a magnitude 7.4 earthquake that struck western Colombia has risen to 132, with more than 570 people injured. Imphal, September 1: JFD Convenor Jitendra Ningomba was allegedly targeted for detention by a team of Manipur Police Commandos at around 10 pm yesterday near Palace Compound. According to information received by Impact News, Jitendra was travelling with another JFD member when a Commando Rakshak bulletproof vehicle allegedly attempted to intercept their vehicle. The attempt reportedly ended after Meira Paibi members arrived at the spot. The Commandos reportedly told those present that the vehicle had been intercepted because it was suspected to be without a number plate. Jitendra and the other JFD member were subsequently allowed to leave the area.

CM Says BJP Leadership Understands Manipur

Addressing BJP workers at the party office in Imphal after returning from Delhi, Khemchand said Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and other leaders are aware of the situation in Manipur. He said the decision to defer the Census had already been taken before his August 25 visit to Delhi, but a formal meeting was required before the decision was made public. Sarda Says BJP Conveying People’s Concerns to Centre

14 CSOs Discuss NRC and Village Volunteers With Athawale

Kangpokpi, September 1: Tension between Naga and Kuki communities has escalated in Kangpokpi district, with fresh clashes reported along the Imphal-Tamei Road. According to villagers, four Naga villages—Tapon Khunou, Tapon Khullen, Makui Pipuram and Makui Khunjao—were allegedly attacked by Kuki armed groups operating under SoO. Several houses were reportedly set ablaze. Naga Village Guards allegedly retaliated, leading to an exchange of gunfire. Villagers claimed that at least 30 houses, vehicles and other properties were burnt in Tapon Khullen and Tapon Khunou, while the pastor of Tapon Khullen reportedly sustained a bullet injury. Kuki-Zo MLAs Set to Return to Assembly

Imphal, September 1: The India Meteorological Department’s Imphal Centre has forecast continued rainfall across Manipur in the coming days, with heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms likely in parts of Ukhrul, Kamjong and Chandel districts. A yellow warning has been issued for the affected areas. Rainfall is also expected tonight in Ukhrul, Kamjong, Tengnoupal, Chandel and Pherzawl, while isolated showers are likely in several other districts. Imphal, September 1: Nine-year-old Manipur swimmer Aavya Khomdram finished Third Runner-Up at the Asian Open Schools Invitational Swimming Championships 2026 in Thailand. Competing at the Assumption University Aquatic Centre, Suvarnabhumi Campus, from August 29 to 30, Aavya won two gold, one silver and one bronze medal, accumulating 143 points. The Class 4 student of Sanghamitra School, Hyderabad, was among 160 swimmers from 16 Asian countries who competed in the championship. Centre Defers Census in Manipur

Imphal, August 31: The Union Government has deferred the Census exercise in Manipur following a high-level review meeting chaired by Union Home Minister Amit Shah in New Delhi today. The meeting was attended by Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla, Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand, Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan and senior officials. The demand for deferring the Census until implementation of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in the state was discussed in detail. 14 CSOs Say High Court Withholds Census Exercise

Imphal, August 31: Convenor of the 14 CSOs of Kangleipak, Shanta Nahakpam, said the High Court of Manipur has withheld the Census exercise in the state until further hearing. Speaking outside the High Court, Shanta said the 14 CSOs and Kangleipak Students’ Association had filed a PIL and writ petitions concerning the Census. He said the matter was heard by a Special Bench today and the next hearing has been fixed for October 12. Shanta said the organisations have been pursuing the issue since 2021 and reiterated the demand for NRC updation before the Census. He urged MLAs to raise the issue during the ongoing Assembly session.

JFD Announces 24-Hour General Strike

Imphal, August 31: The Campaign for Just and Fair Delimitation (JFD) has decided to proceed with a 24-hour general strike from midnight tonight until midnight on September 1, stating that the Centre has not taken a concrete decision on NRC updation before the Census. Kakching, August 31: The Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee’s OBC Department organised an OBC District Convention-cum-Felicitation Programme for NEET-qualified students at Sekmaijin Mayai Leikai Community Hall. Jemandar Recruitment Candidates Demand Pending Results

Imphal, August 31: Candidates who appeared for recruitment to the 10th and 11th IRB/MR Jemandar posts have questioned the government’s failure to declare the results despite completion of the recruitment process. Speaking at Manipur Press Club, a candidate said 416 aspirants appeared for the Viva Voce and interview under a Central nominee system involving IG-level officers. The candidates described the recruitment process as transparent and questioned why the results have remained pending for nearly seven years. They pointed out that Rifleman recruitment results were declared and selected candidates have already completed training and joined service. The candidates urged the government to declare the pending results before the Model Code of Conduct comes into force.

Three Killed, Four Injured in Kangpokpi Clash

Kangpokpi, August 31: Three people, including two women, were killed and four others injured in a clash between armed Naga and Kuki groups at Teikhang Village along the Imphal-Tamei road this morning. At least three houses were also reportedly set ablaze. The incident occurred around 9 am, with all the deceased and injured reported to be residents of Teikhang Village. The deceased have been identified as Lamtinthang Lhoujem, Tingneichin Lhouvum and Hoineng Lhoujem. The injured were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. Additional security forces have been deployed at the site. Kuki groups alleged involvement of NSCN (IM) and ZUF, though the claim has not been independently verified.

Grenade Found Near Shija Hospital

Imphal, August 31: A hand grenade was reportedly found in front of a public toilet near Shija Hospital at Langol under Lamphel Police Station this morning. The explosive was discovered at around 7 am, following which Lamphel Police reached the spot and secured the area. Police personnel safely recovered the grenade without any untoward incident. The discovery comes amid heightened security concerns in different parts of Manipur. Authorities are expected to investigate the circumstances under which the grenade was placed near the public facility and identify those responsible. No casualty or property damage was reported in connection with the incident.

Naloxone to Be Made Widely Available in Manipur

Imphal, August 31: The Directorate of Health Services, Manipur has announced wider availability of Naloxone as part of International Overdose Awareness Day 2026, observed under the theme “25 Years On, Still Needed.” Director of Health Services Dr. N. Hemantakumar said Naloxone is a life-saving medicine used to reverse opioid overdoses involving substances such as heroin, morphine, methadone and fentanyl. He said the medicine, listed in the National List of Essential Medicines 2022, will be made available at government hospitals, Community Health Centres, Primary Health Centres, Urban Primary Health Centres and other authorised health facilities. The initiative aims to help prevent deaths caused by opioid overdose.

Okram Joy Questions Short Assembly Session

Imphal, August 31: Veteran politician Okram Joy has questioned the decision to hold the upcoming Manipur Assembly session for only a few days, saying the prevailing situation requires a longer and more meaningful discussion. Okram Joy Demands Classical Language Status for Manipuri

Imphal, August 31: Veteran politician Okram Joy has alleged that the failure to grant Classical Language status to Manipuri reflects a lack of political determination by governments at the Centre and in the state. Joy recalled efforts by former Lok Sabha MP Y. Yaima to secure recognition for Manipuri, which was eventually included as the eighth language in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution following a parliamentary amendment in 1992. He also noted that Manipuri received the Sahitya Akademi Award as early as 1973. Rescued Sambar Deer Handed Over to Eroisemba Zoo

Imphal, August 31: A sambar deer that strayed from the hills was rescued and safely handed over to Eroisemba Zoo. Members of Langol Pioneer Club rescued the deer after it was found at Langol Yumjaomanbi Leikai. With assistance from volunteers of Uripok Apunba Lup, the animal was safely transported and handed over to officials of the zoo. The coordinated rescue operation ensured that the animal was moved away from the residential area without harm. Heavy to very heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms is possible in the warned areas. On September 1, rainfall is likely across many parts of Tamenglong, Senapati, Kangpokpi, Imphal West, Imphal East, Ukhrul, Kamjong, Jiribam, Noney, Tengnoupal, Chandel and Pherzawl districts. Some areas of Bishnupur, Thoubal, Kakching and Churachandpur may also receive rain. The ICAR Agrometeorological Unit at Lamphelpat reported around 29 mm of rainfall in Manipur today.

Manipur Wins 31 Medals at North East Zone Shooting Championship

Imphal, August 31: Manipur secured 31 medals at the 13th North East Zone Shooting Championship 2026 held at Guwahati Sports Shooting Range, Kahilipara, Assam. The state won seven gold, 15 silver and nine bronze medals at the championship organised by the Assam Rifle and Shooting Association under the National Rifle Association of India. Imphal, August 30: RPI-Athawale National President and Union Minister Ramdas Athawale will arrive in Imphal tomorrow for a two-day visit to Manipur. Speaking at a press meet at the party’s Keishampat office, National Secretary Maheshwar Thounaojam said Athawale has publicly committed to supporting key issues concerning the state. He said the Union Minister has backed demands for NRC updation before the Census and inclusion of Meitei/Meetei in the Scheduled Tribe list. Athawale will attend a public meeting at City Convention Centre after his arrival. Maheshwar appealed to people to participate in the meeting, stressing that the visit is intended to demonstrate the party’s commitment to Manipur and its people.

CPI Seeks Concrete NRC Decision in Assembly

Imphal, August 30: The CPI Manipur State Council has urged the State Government to take a concrete decision in the upcoming Assembly session on NRC updation before conducting the Census. Speaking to reporters at Irawat Bhawan, CPI spokesperson R.K. Amusana said the government must move beyond assurances on restoring peace and demonstrate its commitment through firm decisions. He called for measures to stop armed attacks, arson and killings of civilians. Amusana also highlighted the state’s deteriorating financial condition and growing unemployment among educated youth. He urged the government to seek a Special Economic Package from the Centre and demanded that thousands of vacant posts in various government departments be filled at the earliest.

UNAL Marks 11th Foundation Day

Imphal, August 30: The 11th Foundation Day of Uripok Nupi Apunba Lup and the third Uripok Nupi Yaipha Meira observance were held at Imphal Public Library, Uripok Sorbon Thingel, today. Speaking at the programme, UNAL President Sagolshem Indrani said the organisation has continued to take up responsibilities on various fronts for the welfare of the state. She recalled UNAL’s three-month agitation seeking justice for six people, including children, killed in Jiribam. Indrani said the organisation has extended assistance to people affected by the violence since May 2023. UNAL also extended support to the JFD-led “No NRC, No Census” movement and called for unity during public movements.

Rajeev Singh Thakur Set to Become Manipur Chief Secretary

Imphal, August 30: Manipur is set to get its fifth Chief Secretary in three years following the transfer of senior IAS officer Rajeev Singh Thakur from the Rajasthan cadre to the Manipur cadre. According to a Department of Personnel and Training order dated August 28, the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet approved his inter-cadre transfer until June 30, 2029, or until his superannuation. Thakur, a 1995-batch IAS officer, is currently Programme Director for Administration, Governance and Reforms, Infrastructure Connectivity at NITI Aayog. Meanwhile, Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand hosted a farewell for outgoing Chief Secretary Puneet Kumar Goel, who is due to retire this month, and praised his contributions to peace efforts and IDP resettlement.

PDA Khurai Candidate Forms Election Central Committee

Imphal, August 30: Peoples Democratic Alliance intending candidate from Khurai Assembly Constituency, Laitonjam Jayananda, has formed his Election Central Committee ahead of the 13th Manipur Assembly election expected early next year. Speaking at the committee’s office-bearer selection programme at Khurai Konsam Leikai, Jayananda described the upcoming election as decisive for Manipur and Khurai. He stressed that participating in elections is a democratic right and expressed confidence of winning with public support. Jayananda also criticised his political rival and called for his resignation. On the prevailing situation, he alleged that the State Government has failed to restore normalcy and referred to the recent killing of four Naga youths in an ambush.

Arms Cache Recovered in Bishnupur

Bishnupur, August 30: Bishnupur District Police and security forces recovered a cache of arms and explosives during a search operation at Keipha Road Patton near a water supply pump on August 29. The recovered items included a 9-mm pistol, a .32 pistol, a country-made AK rifle, a country-made MP-9, a country-made SBBL and a country-made .22 rifle, along with magazines. Security personnel also recovered two Number 36 hand grenades, two improvised explosive devices, ammunition of different calibres and other accessories. The recovery was made during a joint search operation as part of continuing security measures in the district. Further details regarding the source and intended use of the weapons were not immediately available.

Two Arrested With 53 Grams of Heroin in Bishnupur

Bishnupur, August 30: Manipur Police arrested two persons and seized 53 grams of Heroin Number 4 during a routine vehicle-checking operation near the Sericulture Training Centre at Phougakchao Ikhai. According to police, the suspected contraband was concealed in five separate soap caps. The arrested persons were identified as 34-year-old Md. Amir Khan of Kwakta Ward Number 3 and 33-year-old Md. Bungo of Kwakta Pangal Lamkhai. Police also seized a Suzuki Burgman Street 125cc scooter allegedly used by the two men. The arrests were made as part of the ongoing War on Drugs campaign. A case has been registered and further investigation is underway.

Grenade Attack Reported at Khangabok Petrol Pump

Thoubal, August 30: Unidentified persons allegedly hurled a hand grenade at Sorojini Oil Pump located between Wangbal and Wangjing along National Highway-102 last evening. According to police, the incident occurred at around 6:30 pm. No injuries or major property damage were reported. Following the blast, SDPO Thoubal, the Officer-in-Charge of Thoubal Police Station and personnel from the Commando unit rushed to the site and inspected the area. Police said the identity of those behind the attack and the motive remain unknown. The incident has raised concern among local residents and businesses along the highway. Further investigation is underway to identify those responsible for the attack.

Sit-In Held Against Khangabok Petrol Pump Blast

Thoubal, August 30: A sit-in protest was held today at Sorojini Oil Pump, Khangabok, condemning last evening’s grenade attack on the petrol pump. Protesters carried placards and raised slogans against attacks at public places. Speaking during the protest, Khangabok Part-Two Village Educational Development and Sports Cooperative Organisation Youth Wing Convenor Saikhom Mahanta said unidentified persons allegedly arrived in a four-wheeler and hurled the explosive at the petrol pump. He condemned the incident and urged those responsible to clarify their actions. Mahanta warned that local residents would launch democratic agitations if no clarification is provided and appealed to all sections to refrain from spreading fear and intimidation at public places.

Imphal, August 30: A public deliberation on the Suspension of Operations agreement with KNO and UPF was held at Sangai Hall of Imphal Hotel, North AOC, today. The discussion, titled “SoO with KNO & UPF: Examining the Record and the Way Forward,” brought together representatives of public organisations, prominent citizens and community leaders. Participants unanimously resolved that the SoO agreement has become a major obstacle to achieving complete peace in Manipur. They called upon the Government of India to revoke the agreement. The deliberation focused on examining the record of the agreement and discussing possible steps towards restoring lasting peace and addressing concerns surrounding armed groups operating under the SoO framework.

ZUF Observes 95th Martyrdom Day of Haipou Jadonang

Noney, August 30: The Zeliangrong United Front observed the 95th Martyrdom Day of Haipou Jadonang at its Council Headquarters, General Headquarters, battalions and tactical units across Assam, Manipur and Nagaland. According to a statement issued by the organisation’s Ministry of Information and Publicity, the observance included military salutes, solemn tributes and candle-lighting ceremonies. ZUF recalled Jadonang’s sacrifice and his struggle under extremely difficult circumstances. The organisation also alleged that the Government of India has continued to delay recognition of his contribution and demanded that he receive equal and due recognition and awards as a freedom fighter of India. MLA Takes Up Reconstruction of Dilapidated House

Imphal, August 30: Mayang Imphal MLA Kongkham Robindro has taken up the reconstruction of a severely dilapidated house belonging to Thoudam Thoi at Mayang Imphal Thana Wangkhei Leikai. Construction work began on August 1 after the Khuman Leibakki Lamyanba Kanglup and local Meira Paibi appealed to the MLA for assistance. Thoi has reportedly been living in the damaged house with her 24-year-old daughter, who is a person with disability, following the death of her husband Thoudam Joy. Former KLLK President Yumnam Opendro thanked the MLA for responding to the request. He also appealed to authorities to ensure the family receives widow pension and disability-related benefits.

Imphal, August 30: A weeklong Sanskrit teaching workshop, “Sanskrit Saptatha Charanam,” and a 10-day online Sanskrit Varga concluded at Sanskrit Tol, DMU campus, today. The programme was organised by Samskrita Bharati, Manipur Prant, and Sanskrit Tol Imphal. Speaking on the occasion, Dhanamanjuri University Vice Chancellor W. Bishnupur, August 30: Lions Club of Imphal, Lions Club of Ningthoukhong and Mangang Dental Clinic jointly organised a free medical camp at Mangang Dental Clinic, Ningthoukhong, today. ‘Ningol Di Sana-Ni’ Play Postponed

Imphal, August 30: The staging of the new play “Ningol Di Sana-Ni,” scheduled for tomorrow at 3 pm at MDU Hall, Yaiskul Police Lane, has been postponed. In a press statement, the Royal Theatrical Club said the decision was taken in view of the prevailing situation in the state. The play was scheduled to be staged as part of the club’s theatrical activities, but the organisers decided to defer the performance considering the current circumstances. A revised date for the staging has not been announced. Theatre groups and audiences are expected to await further communication from the Royal Theatrical Club regarding the new schedule for the production.

Three Manipuri Cyclists Selected for Asian Games

Imphal, August 30: Three cyclists from Manipur — Laitonjam Ronaldo, Keithellakpam James and Yanglem Rojit — will represent India in the Cycling Track event at the 20th Asian Games. The Games will be hosted by Japan in Aichi-Nagoya under the aegis of the Olympic Council of Asia. India’s Cycling Track contingent will comprise 14 cyclists, including six men and eight women. The selection of the three Manipuri cyclists adds to the state’s growing representation in international sporting events. Their participation at the Asian Games will provide an opportunity to compete against leading cyclists from across Asia while representing the country at one of the region’s biggest multi-sport competitions.

Two Killed, Six Injured in ZUF Factional Clash

Noney, August 29: Two persons, including the Chief Secretary of Zeliangrong United Front (Kamson), were killed and six cadres injured in a factional clash between ZUF (Jenchui) and ZUF (Kamson). According to reports, the incident began around 4:30 pm yesterday at Puichi under Haochong Sub-Division, where ZUF (Kamson) was preparing a sports event to mark the 95th Martyrdom Day of Haipou Jadonang. ZUF (Jenchui) cadres allegedly attacked the event site, killing the ZUF (K) Chief Secretary. Later this morning, ZUF (K) cadres reportedly ambushed ZUF (J) cadres returning from Haochong, killing one and injuring six others.

Six Injured ZUF-J Cadres Brought to Imphal

Noney, August 29: Six cadres of Zeliangrong United Front (Jenchui) injured in a factional clash have been brought to Imphal by CRPF personnel for medical treatment. Five of the injured are undergoing treatment at JNIMS Hospital, Porompat, while one seriously injured cadre is being treated at Shija Hospital, Langol. The injured have been identified as 38-year-old Nelson Gangmei, 30-year-old Sharon Inpui, 30-year-old Gaina Kamei, 20-year-old Kalanthui Kamei, 32-year-old Disinthui Gonmei and 18-year-old Pouchuilung. Sharon Inpui, from Puichi in Noney, is reported to be in serious condition. The incident followed a clash between ZUF-J and ZUF-K cadres.

NPF Leader Demands Stern Action Over Naga Killings

Senapati, August 29: Naga Peoples Front Manipur State President and Tamei MLA Awangbou Newmai has urged the government to take stern action against the Kuki National Front-President group if it is found responsible for the killing of four Naga civilians. He was speaking at a condolence programme held at Chawangkining Village in honour of the four civilians killed in the August 27 ambush along the IT Road in Kangpokpi district. Awangbou said such killings must not recur and urged Kuki leaders to take responsibility for preventing violence. He also said any armed group involved in killing civilians must face appropriate action, describing such an incident as a serious violation of the Suspension of Operations arrangement.

ZUF Condemns Killing of Chief Secretary

Noney, August 29: The Zeliangrong United Front has condemned the killing of its Chief Secretary Nguiba, alias Dingtiplung Gonmei, from Soubunglong Village. In a press release, the organisation alleged that he was killed in an attack carried out by cadres of ZUF (Jenchui). The organisation described Nguiba’s contributions to the people and the land during his lifetime as unforgettable and expressed solidarity with his bereaved family. The statement comes amid a factional clash between ZUF (Jenchui) and ZUF (Kamson) in the Haochong area, in which two persons were killed and six cadres injured. The incident has raised fresh concerns over clashes between rival Zeliangrong armed groups.

RPI-Athawale Promises Support on NRC, ST Demand

Dairy Farmers Announce Increase in Milk Prices

Imphal, August 29: The Dairy Farmers’ Association Manipur has announced an increase in milk prices, citing rising production costs and the sharp increase in cattle feed prices. D-FARM Convenor Th. Bony said locally produced milk will now be sold at Rs 80 per litre wholesale and Rs 100 per litre retail. Speaking at a press meet at Manipur Press Club, he said dairy farmers have been facing severe financial difficulties as the price of cattle feed imported from outside the state continues to rise. He added that farmers were previously forced to sell milk at prices that did not cover their production costs. The association decided to revise prices following a meeting.

Road Blockade Over Poor Road Condition in Jiribam

Jiribam, August 29: Local residents have blocked the road connecting Gularthol and Uchathol in protest against the government’s failure to repair the badly damaged road. Uchathol Meira Paibi President Ph. Monteshori said the road is an important link in Jiribam, particularly as the District Hospital is located along the route and the road is frequently used by State and Central security forces. She said repeated appeals had been made to the Chief Minister and concerned authorities for repairs, but no action has been taken so far. Monteshori warned that the public may launch intensified agitations if the government fails to repair the road at the earliest.

95th Death Anniversary of Haipou Jadonang Observed

Imphal, August 29: The 95th Death Anniversary of freedom fighter Haipou Jadonang was observed at Jadonang Park, Keishampat, today. The programme was organised by the Freedom Fighter Haipou Jadonang Death Anniversary and Park Committee. Religious rituals and floral tributes were offered at his statue by Nungba MLA Dinganglung Gangmei, COCOMI Convenor YK Dhiren, AMUCO President Sorokhaibam Sanjoy, BJP Manipur Pradesh Vice President Nongthombam Nimbus and representatives of various organisations. Committee Chairman Jangamlung Dangmei urged the government to declare Jadonang’s death anniversary a state holiday and observe it as an official state function. Jadonang Death Anniversary Observed in Noney

Noney, August 29: The 95th Death Anniversary of freedom fighter Haipou Jadonang was observed at Puiluanh, also known as Kambiron Village, under Nungba Sub-Division today. The village is regarded as the birthplace of Jadonang. The programme was organised by the Haipou Jadonang Memorial Trust Committee, with participants paying floral tributes and remembering his contributions to the freedom movement. Similar observances were also held in Assam, Manipur, Nagaland and other parts of the country where Zeliangrong people are settled. The programmes recalled Jadonang’s role in resisting British colonial rule and highlighted the importance of preserving his legacy and contributions to the history and identity of the indigenous people of the region.

Imphal, August 29: State Level Stakeholders’ Consultation 2026 on the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2015 was held at the High Court of Manipur Auditorium today. Imphal, August 29: A one-day seminar on the International Medicine Programme offered by Hong Bang International University, Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, was held at Hotel Classic, Imphal today. University Deputy Director Thang Nguyen Hoang said the university, established in 1997, offers undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, including international courses in Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy and Nursing. National Sports Day Observed Across Manipur

Imphal, August 29: National Sports Day was observed across the country today to commemorate the birth anniversary of legendary hockey player Major Dhyan Chand. In Manipur, the All Manipur Taekwondo Association organised a programme at the Indoor Hall of the National Sports Academy, Khuman Lampak Sports Complex. Officials and sports personalities attended the event, where Major Dhyan Chand’s contribution to Indian hockey was recalled. Certificates and identity cards were distributed to 72 coaches who completed the State Coach License Course conducted from August 25 to 29. The participants included 47 male and 25 female coaches from several districts and the Manipur Police Sports Club. The course aimed to develop qualified coaches and nurture sporting talent.

Imphal, August 29: The Directorate of Health Services observed National Sports Day at Chumthang Sanapung, Langthabal, today under the theme “Eat Right, Play Hard: Stop Obesity By Eating Safe and Healthy.” Director of Health Services N. Hemantakumar said Manipur has established itself as a powerhouse of sports, with athletes winning accolades at major international championships. He stressed that sports should not be promoted only on National Sports Day but throughout the year. Sunil Kumar Sharma said the institute is making significant progress towards becoming one of the most advanced centres for Sports Medicine in the Northeast. Speaking at the National Sports Day programme at RIMS, he highlighted the growing importance of Sports Medicine and said the department is being equipped with advanced facilities and equipment. Spastic Society Secretary Dr. Laishram Ricky said the meet aims to identify and nurture talented athletes and promote disability sports in Manipur. He also highlighted the benefits of sports for the physical and emotional wellbeing of persons with disabilities. Imphal, August 29: Assam Rifles Public School, Mantripukhri observed National Sports Day through a two-day programme focused on resilience, discipline, teamwork and sportsmanship. The programme was organised with the Physical Education Department playing a major role in coordinating the event. College Principal Professor H. Manoranjan, Vice Principal Dr. S. Shyamkiran, Teachers’ Association President W. Sobhapati and Indian professional footballer MK Kashmina attended the programme. Ariha, Anjori Meet Chief Minister

Imphal, August 29: Asian Aerobic Gymnastics Championship medallists Ariha Pangambam and Anjori Pangambam met Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand at the Chief Minister’s Secretariat today. Ariha created history by winning India’s first-ever gold medal at the 10th Aerobic Gymnastics Asian Championships in the Philippines, while Anjori secured seventh position. The Chief Minister congratulated the two young athletes and expressed happiness over their achievements. He conveyed his best wishes for their future competitions and said their success would bring further recognition to Manipur and India. During the meeting, Khemchand also released a booklet published by the Manipur Olympic Association, marking the achievements and development of sports in the state.

Arms, Mortar Shells Recovered in Samushang

Imphal, August 29: A combined team of Imphal West District Commandos, 109th CRPF Battalion QAT and D34 CRPF recovered a cache of arms and explosive materials during a search operation at Samushang Shantipur under Wangoi Police Station this morning. The recovery included two 51-mm mortar shells, one locally made mortar shell, one Chinese hand grenade, one stun grenade and an IED explosive mechanism. Security forces also recovered a metre-long Cordtex wire, one 9-mm pistol, five AK live rounds, one .303 LMG magazine and a defective K6 drone set. Five camouflage bulletproof vests and four slings were also recovered. Further investigation into the recovery is underway.

Jiribam Police Arrest Murder Case Accused

Jiribam, August 29: Jiribam Police have arrested the prime accused in a murder case registered at T8 Guduvanchery Police Station in Tamil Nadu. The arrested person has been identified as 22-year-old Manik Uddin Laskar, son of Monir Uddin Laskar, from the Sonabarighat area of Sonai in Assam’s Cachar district. He was arrested yesterday from Rashidpur by a team led by ASI S. Suraj of Jiribam District Police Station. Police said the accused will be handed over to Tamil Nadu Police for further legal action in connection with the murder case. The arrest followed coordination between the concerned police authorities in connection with the investigation.

RPF Denies Association With Arrested Man

Imphal, August 29: The proscribed Revolutionary People’s Front has denied any connection with a 28-year-old man arrested by a combined team of Imphal East Police Commandos and 33 Assam Rifles on August 26. In a press statement, RPF Assistant Secretary, Publicity, Bangkim said Ningthoujam Joyshana alias Joy, arrested from Kongba Laishram Leikai, has no association whatsoever with the RPF or its armed wing, the People’s Liberation Army. The statement was issued to clarify reports linking the arrested individual with the proscribed organisation. Authorities had arrested Joyshana during a security operation in Imphal East, while the RPF has now publicly rejected any organisational connection with him.

Children’s Literature Workshop Begins in Imphal

Imphal, August 29: A two-day workshop on children’s literature, short stories and poetry reading began at Maichou Taret Auditorium, Imphal, today. The workshop is being organised by Leikol, also known as Leimarol Khorjeikol Manipur, under the Art and Culture Department’s CMAT Scheme. Manipur Boxer Mandengbam Jadumani to Compete at Asian Games

Imphal, August 29: Boxer Mandengbam Jadumani from Manipur will represent India at the 20th Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, scheduled from September 19 to October 4. Jadumani will compete in the men’s 55-kg category as part of India’s 11-member boxing contingent comprising six men and five women. A native of Iroisemba Mayai Leikai, Jadumani initially pursued football before taking up boxing in 2016 on the encouragement of his elder brother. He began training at Sarita Regional Boxing Academy, Mayang Imphal, in 2022. He won bronze and silver medals at World Boxing Cup events in 2025 and a silver at the Commonwealth Games this year. He is now targeting gold at the Asian Games.
