Violence Reported in Noney and Kangpokpi, One Killed

Kangpokpi, September 23: Violent incidents were reported in parts of Kangpokpi and Noney districts today, leaving one person dead and several houses burnt. According to reports, armed men allegedly attacked Chanriupiu village, also known as Makui Khunthak, around 4:30 AM and reportedly set 12 houses on fire. Around 15 houses were also reportedly torched at nearby Changaram village. Heavy gunfire was subsequently reported between armed groups from Makui Naga village and nearby Kuki villages. One person, identified as 36-year-old Poajangam Chongloi of Lasan Kuki Village, was killed in the exchange. Naga villagers alleged he was a KRA cadre, though the claim has not been officially verified. Four Naga houses were also reportedly burnt at Kapningching Mukti Part-5 in Noney district.

Federation of Haomee Condemns Killing of Liangmai Youth

Imphal, September 23: The Federation of Haomee has condemned the reported killing of Liangmai youth NK Wiphenbau, allegedly by Kuki militants. Speaking to the media at the Federation’s office in Dewlahland Kabo Leikai, President Sapamcha Jadumani criticised the Centre and the Manipur government for what he described as failure to take strong action against those responsible. Jadumani demanded justice for the killing of six Liangmai civilians and called for concrete steps for the rehabilitation of internally displaced persons. MPSC Recruiting 430 College Teachers to Address Shortage

Arms and Ammunition Recovered in Thoubal

Thoubal, September 23: A combined team of Thoubal Commando Unit and 31 Assam Rifles recovered a cache of arms and ammunition during a search operation at Haokhong near Phouoibi village under Nongpok Sekmai Police Station today. According to the police report, the recovered items included one AK-56 rifle with magazine, one locally made lathe gun and three .32 pistols. Security personnel also recovered two 9mm pistols with magazines, two .32 magazines, seven No. 36 HE hand grenades, six lathe-gun shells and 40 rounds of ammunition of different calibres. Two Arrested With Over 2 Kg WY Tablets in Mantripukhri

Imphal, September 23: A combined team of Heingang Police Station and the Quick Action Team of 86 Battalion CRPF seized more than two kilograms of WY tablets from two men at Mantripukhri yesterday. According to police, the arrested persons were identified as 37-year-old Md. Anish Khan of Lilong Usoipokpi and 36-year-old Korimayum Nurul Haque of Lilong Haoreibi Makha Leikai. The two were reportedly travelling in passenger bus MN-03 T-2080. During a check at Mantripukhri, security personnel recovered around 2.1 kilograms of WY tablets, numbering approximately 20,000 tablets. The two men were arrested in connection with the seizure.

Odisha and North Andhra on Alert Over Deep Depression

17-Year-Old Liangmai Naga Youth Shot Dead in Tamenglong

Tamenglong, September 21: A 17-year-old Liangmai Naga youth was reportedly shot dead by unidentified armed men in Tamei Sub-Division of Tamenglong district early today. The deceased, identified as NK Wiphenbou, son of NK Maihinlakbou of Takou Liangmai Naga village, was a Class XI student of Liangmei Higher Secondary School, Tamei. The incident reportedly occurred around 1:30 AM between Malek Village and Upper Takou while he was travelling towards Tamei. Joint Tribe Council Condemns Killing of Liangmai Youth

Manipur Prisons Department Observes First Raising Day

Imphal, September 21: RIMS, Imphal, observed World Alzheimer’s Day 2026 today at its New OPD Block. RIMS Director Prof. G. Sunil Kumar Sharma stressed the importance of awareness, early diagnosis, timely intervention, family support and dignity for people living with dementia. The RIMS Departments of Psychiatry and Neurology distributed leaflets and information, education and communication materials on Alzheimer’s disease and dementia to patients, attendants and healthcare workers. Meanwhile, medicines provided under the National Policy for Rare Diseases 2021 were distributed to four children with cystic fibrosis at the RIMS Centre of Excellence for Rare Diseases. The programmes highlighted the importance of awareness and support for patients and families.

Milan, September 21: Manipuri fashion designer Robert Naorem showcased his collection at an international fashion event held at Melina Milano Hotel in Milan, Italy, yesterday evening. The collection highlighted Manipur’s textile tradition and was presented alongside collections from 27 fashion designers. The international fashion showcase was organised with support from Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand and the Department of Sericulture. Naorem’s participation brought Manipuri textile traditions to an international fashion platform, highlighting the state’s distinctive handloom and fashion heritage. Nagaland Filmmaker Theja Rio’s ‘Angh’ Wins Platform Award at TIFF

Toronto, September 21: Nagaland filmmaker Theja Rio’s debut feature film ‘Angh’ has won the Platform Award at the 51st Toronto International Film Festival, along with a cash prize of 20,000 Canadian dollars. The film was the only Indian entry among 12 titles in TIFF’s competitive Platform section. Set in a remote Konyak village in Nagaland in the early 1960s, ‘Angh’ explores tradition, identity, faith and cultural change through a father-son relationship following the arrival of an American missionary. The film’s TIFF Platform win makes it eligible for consideration in the International Feature Film category at the 2027 Academy Awards under the Academy’s 2026 eligibility rules.

14 Manipur Swimmers Qualify for Asian Masters Aquatic Championship

Imphal, September 21: Fourteen swimmers from Manipur, including 12 men and two women, have qualified for the 2nd Asian Masters Aquatic Championship 2026. According to the Manipur Swimming Association, 11 of the male players are medal winners of the 22nd National Masters Aquatic Championship 2026, held in Haryana from September 11 to 13. Swimmer Tekcham Roshan has also qualified for the Asian championship. The Manipur Swimming Association congratulated the medal winners and all 14 qualified players, appreciating their hard work, dedication and discipline. The association wished the swimmers success as they prepare to represent Manipur and India at the Asian-level championship.

MRPPCC Calls for Strong Regional Political Platform in Manipur

Imphal, September 20: Manipur Regional Political Parties Coordinating Committee (MRPPCC) Chairman Khaidem Mani has stressed the need for a strong regional political party in Manipur that prioritises people’s interests and safeguards the state. Speaking after the committee’s first meeting at the Peoples Democratic Alliance office in Naoremthong, Mani said the meeting discussed NRC updation with 1951 as the base year before the Census, abrogation of the SoO agreement, rehabilitation and resettlement of internally displaced persons and the possibility of a government led by regional parties. He said the committee would welcome other regional parties and field common candidates in the upcoming Assembly elections.

MRPPCC Lists NRC, Territorial Integrity and IDP Rehabilitation as Key Priorities

Imphal, September 20: PDA President Yumnam Joykumar said the Manipur Regional Political Parties Coordinating Committee (MRPPCC) will give greater emphasis to regional political parties and currently supports conducting the Census only after NRC updation. Speaking at a press meet, Joykumar said safeguarding Manipur’s territorial integrity, protecting indigenous people and securing national highways would be among the committee’s key agendas. He also called for abrogation of the SoO agreement with Kuki militants, while describing demands for separate administration as contrary to the agreement’s ground rules. Joykumar said internally displaced persons should be rehabilitated and resettled with financial assistance and called for sincere efforts by both state and central governments to restore peace.

Meitei Tribe Union Observes Ninth Severance Day

Imphal, September 20: The Meitei/Meetei Tribe Union (MMTU) observed 9th Severance Day at Hotel Nirmala, MG Avenue, Imphal, marking the exclusion of the Meitei/Meetei community from the Scheduled Tribes list. Manipur Chamber of Commerce and Industry President Dr. Basudev, Kabui Union Manipur President Dr. K. Hera Kabui and MMTU President S. Gourakeshwar attended the observance. Speaking on the occasion, MMTU Secretary General Mutum Churamani said the inclusion of the Meitei/Meetei community in the Scheduled Tribes list is constitutionally permissible. He claimed the community was recognised as a tribe from the British period until the merger of Manipur with India. Churamani said several organisations have extended support to the demand for re-inclusion of the community in the ST list. He added that the MMTU has approached the Supreme Court and is preparing for a major agitation ahead of the 2027 general election.

Tension in Kangpokpi After Six Persons Detained Over Chawankining Attack

Kangpokpi, September 20: Tension gripped Kangpokpi district after security forces detained six persons from Khollen Kuki village on the IT Road in connection with the recent attack at Chawankining. According to reports, a joint team of Kangpokpi District Police and CRPF conducted an operation at the village and detained the six persons. Following the detentions, protesters reportedly blocked roads at several locations, including Motbung and Sapermeina, and damaged or set fire to vehicles. Security forces used tear gas shells and rubber bullets to control the situation. A CRPF Casper vehicle was also reportedly attacked with a petrol bomb. The six detained persons were later released unconditionally, following which the protests subsided.

Ayush Minister Urges People to Adopt Yoga and Ayurveda

Imphal, September 20: Union Minister of State for Ayush, Health and Family Welfare Prataprao Ganpatrao Jadhav has urged people to make use of Yoga and Ayurveda to promote healthy living and wellness. He was speaking at the closing ceremony of the five-day Sri Sri Ganesh Puja Celebration at Iboyaima Shumang Leela Shanglen. The festival, organised by the Sri Sri Ganesh Puja Celebration Committee Manipur, began on September 15. Home Minister Govindas Konthoujam prayed for equality and communal harmony during the closing programme. Cultural troupes presented religious and traditional dance and music performances. Several political leaders, including Shiv Sena Manipur Pradesh President M. Tombi and MLAs Khumukcham Joykishan and Nishikant Sapam, attended the event.

Handloom Employees’ Union Opposes Appointment of MCS Officer as Director

Imphal, September 20: Handloom and Textiles Employees Union President Chingtam Luwang has alleged that the ongoing issue at the Directorate of Handloom and Textiles is linked to what he described as political interests following the appointment of an MCS cadre as Director. Speaking at Manipur Press Club, Luwang said the union has been urging the government to maintain the convention of appointing a technical person to head the technical department. He said an order appointing an MCS officer as Director was issued on September 15. Luwang alleged that outsiders later created a scene at the Directorate and said the union’s position was in the interest of the department, not to protect any individual.

Textile Centre Official Rejects Claims of Misrepresentation

Imphal, September 20: Officer-in-Charge of the Integrated Textile and Apparel Development Centre at Lamboikhongnangkhong, Bobocha Laishram, has rejected claims that the powerloom sector was being misrepresented by persons from outside the centre. Speaking at a press meet, he said some individuals had visited the centre on a holiday without informing him and created a situation that, according to him, misrepresented the sector. Laishram said the centre has 41 entrepreneurs, with two units currently functioning and seven incomplete units under MANIDCO. He said the centre has not completed three years and faced operational difficulties during the crisis from 2023, but units have been functioning since 2025.

Land Sale Restricted Around Ima Nongmai Lairembi Shrine

Imphal, September 20: A ban has been imposed on the sale of land in Keirao Wangkhem under Keirao Assembly Constituency without permission from the village authority, Meira Paibi, local club and Ima Nongmai Lairembi Ima Apunba Committee. Committee President Luwangthem Tomba said the decision followed allegations that some landowners had begun carrying out activities without consultation. He said a village meeting held on July 11 adopted the resolution. Under the decision, any sale or claim over land located on the upper side of the Wangkhem-Chanam Sandrok road and within 300 metres of the Ima Nongmai Lairembi shrine must be discussed with the concerned village bodies. Residents were also urged not to expand beyond their patta land.

Three Arrested With Over 2 Kg of WY Tablets in Senapati

Senapati, September 20: A combined team of Senapati District Police, CRPF and Assam Rifles arrested three persons in connection with the seizure of more than two kilograms of WY tablets. Police identified the arrested persons as 23-year-old Rohim Ali and 48-year-old Anowar Hussain Laskar, both from Goalpara district of Assam, and Md. Nawaz Khan from Mayang Imphal. According to police, a Bolero travelling from the area was intercepted and checked, leading to the recovery of 10 packets of WY tablets weighing over two kilograms. The vehicle, contraband and Rs. 5,000 in cash were seized. Nawaz Khan was arrested during further investigation. A case has been registered under the NDPS Act.

Imphal, September 20: Three healthcare institutions from Manipur have received national recognition at the AHPI Leadership Awards 2026 held in Jaipur, Rajasthan. Imphal, September 20: Critics Forum Manipur and Kanglei Mime Theatre Repertory jointly organised a one-day seminar on “Postcolonial Discourse in Manipuri Literature and Culture” at the DIPR Auditorium, Nityapat Chuthek. The seminar was sponsored by the Ministry of Culture, Government of India. Manipuri Sahitya Parishad President Dr. Longjam Joychandra, Kanglei Mime Theatre Repertory Director Dr. Yumnam Sadananda, Critics Forum Manipur President Nongthombam Premchand and several writers, scholars and students attended. Imphal, September 20: The ICDS Project Imphal East-1 Sawombung organised a programme marking the ninth Rashtriya Poshan Maah at Keibi Heikak Mapal Community Hall. The programme is part of the nationwide National Nutrition Month being observed from September 9 to October 8 under the theme “Poshan Abhiyaan: Our Anganwadi Our Responsibilities.” A painting competition for students was also organised as part of the event. Imphal, September 20: Manipur hockey goalkeeper Bichu Devi Kharibam has won the prestigious Poligras Magic Skill Award presented by the International Hockey Federation. Bichu represented India at the Women’s Hockey World Cup jointly hosted by the Netherlands and Belgium this year. She played a key role in India’s qualification from the pool stage with a series of saves against England. India eventually finished fifth, its best result in the women’s World Cup in 52 years. Members of FIH Global Suppliers Polytan voted for the award, with Bichu securing 52 percent of the votes. Three Manipur Swimmers Selected for Asian Masters Championship

Imphal, September 20: Manipur swimmers Laikhuram Lenin, Huirem Gojen and Nongmaithem Narjit have been selected for the Indian national team for the second Asian Masters Swimming Championship. The championship will be held in Karnataka from October 4 to 10 under the Asian Aquatic Federation. The event is being hosted by the Karnataka Swimming Association under the aegis of the Swimming Federation of India. JFD Warns of Intensified Agitation Over NRC, Census

Imphal, September 19: The Campaign for Just & Fair Delimitation (JFD) has warned of intensified agitation if the state government fails to issue an official notification by September-end on deferring the entire Census exercise in Manipur until updation of the NRC with 1951 as the base year. Speaking at a sit-in organised by the North Imphal Meira and Club Coordinating Committee at Khinghampat Awang Leikai, JFD Convenor Jeetendra Ningomba said the interests of indigenous people and future generations should not be compromised. He warned that the agitation would be intensified from the following day if the government fails to make a clear announcement within the stipulated period.

JFD Task Force Continues Government Office Closure Agitation

Imphal, September 19: The JFD Task Force continued its office-closure agitation, demanding that the Census not be conducted in Manipur before updation of the NRC with 1951 as the base year. Volunteers reportedly locked several government offices as part of the ongoing protest. The offices affected included the Directorate of Settlement and Land Resources at Lamphel, SDC Heirangoithong, CD Block Hiyangthang, the Minority Office for OBC and SC, and the Manipur Municipality Property Tax Board office at North AOC. The agitation is part of the JFD’s broader campaign seeking NRC updation before the conduct of the Census in the state.

MITEC Discusses Resumption of Indo-Myanmar Trade Through Moreh

Imphal, September 19: The Manipur International Trade and Electronic Cooperation (MITEC) held a general body meeting to discuss preparations for resuming Indo-Myanmar trade and commerce through Moreh after restoration of normalcy in Manipur. The meeting was held at Hotel Classic Grande in Chingmeirong and attended by former Moreh-based traders, stakeholders and experts. AITUC Holds Convention on Manipur Crisis and Political Solution

Imphal, September 19: The All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC), Manipur State Committee, organised a public convention on “Manipur Crisis and Political Solution” at Khwai Bramhapur Community Hall in Uripok Chakrikom. School Founder Appeals for Education to Remain a Free Zone

Imphal, September 19: Prism Higher Secondary School Founder Director T. Kisan has urged organisations to review what he described as excessive monetary demands from educational institutions amid the ongoing crisis in Manipur. Speaking at a felicitation programme for more than 200 students who excelled during the 2025–26 academic session, Kisan appealed to civil society and student organisations to work towards making education a free zone where students can learn without disruption. He said the school provides free education to around 20 internally displaced students every academic session and waives admission fees for Class 11 students from displaced families.

Hand Grenade Recovered at Residence in Kshetrigao

Imphal, September 19: A hand grenade was found at the gate of a residence belonging to Yumkhaibam Fiiroj Khan at Awang Sabal Leikai, Kshetrigao, in Imphal East district. The grenade was reportedly discovered at around 6 a.m. A note bearing the names Jan Muhammed, Haji Din Muhammed and Amar Jan was also found along with the explosive device. Porompat Police, accompanied by the Manipur Bomb Disposal Team, reached the spot and safely removed the grenade. Police have registered a case and launched an investigation into the incident. The motive behind placing the grenade remains unknown at the time of reporting.

Bomb Recovered From Residence in Thoubal District

Thoubal, September 19: A bomb was reportedly planted at the residence of Md. Abdul Rashid at Phundrei Awang Leikai under Khongjom Police Station in Thoubal district. The device was discovered at around 7:30 a.m. following which a team from Khongjom Police Station and the Manipur Bomb Disposal Squad rushed to the area. The bomb was safely recovered and later detonated at Langathel Ching. Police have registered a case and launched an investigation into the incident. The motive behind the planting of the explosive device remains unknown at the time of filing the report.

NRFM Calls Statewide Shutdown on September 21

Imphal, September 19: The proscribed National Revolutionary Front of Manipur (NRFM) has called for a total shutdown across all 16 districts of Manipur on September 21 in connection with the 1949 Manipur Merger Agreement. In a statement, NRFM Information and Publicity Secretary Sanajaoba Meitei claimed that Maharaja Bodhachandra was coerced into signing the agreement on September 21, 1949. The group said the political status of Manipur involves questions of history, constitutional legitimacy, international law and political rights. It further called for principles including self-determination, decolonisation and sovereign equality to be considered in seeking a lasting solution to political issues concerning Manipur.

Powerloom Entrepreneurs Allege Prolonged Neglect of Estate

Imphal, September 19: Entrepreneurs at the Powerloom Estate in Lamboi Khongnangkhong have alleged that prolonged neglect by the Directorate of Handloom and Textiles has affected the functioning of the estate. Entrepreneur Haodijam Devendrajit told the media that the estate’s transformer has remained defunct for three years. He alleged that repeated appeals to the Director-in-Charge to restore power had received no response. According to Devendrajit, the estate was established with around 200 power looms, but some entrepreneurs have been forced to shift their machines elsewhere due to the power crisis. He welcomed the appointment of new Director W. Ibohal, citing his experience in sericulture and the handloom and textiles sector.

Students Demand Early Completion of Jiribam DIET Centre

Jiribam, September 19: Students in Jiribam staged a protest meeting demanding the early completion of the under-construction District Institute of Education and Training (DIET) centre and establishment of a full-fledged DIET centre in the district. The protest meeting was organised by MSF, KSA and DESAM in front of Jiribam Higher Secondary School in Babupara. KSA Jiribam District Council President K. Somorjit said organisations had been urging the authorities for a full-fledged DIET centre for a long time, but there had been no response. He said Jiribam’s distance from Imphal and the absence of a DIET centre create difficulties for students. He added that completion of the project could help address teacher shortages in schools.

Dr Motimala Ngangom Honoured as ‘Mother of Manipur NCC’

Imphal, September 19: Retired NCC Associate Officer Major Dr. Motimala Ngangom has been honoured with the title “Mother of Manipur NCC” by the NCC Alumni Foundation Manipur in recognition of her 34 years of service and contribution to the National Cadet Corps. Dr. Motimala, who served in the NCC from 1984 to 2018, received the Raksha Mantri Padak Award from the Ministry of Defence in 1994. She served as Lady Commander of the NCC North East Region and later held a national-level cultural responsibility. She played a role in promoting Manipur’s cultural identity through NCC cultural troupes. She urged parents to encourage both boys and girls to join the NCC to develop discipline, patriotism and responsible citizenship.

First Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery Performed in Manipur

Imphal, September 19: Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery (MICS) has been successfully performed for the first time in Manipur at SKY Hospital on RIMS Road, Imphal. The procedure was conducted on a 29-year-old woman from Ukhrul district. The surgery was led by SKY Hospital Chief Cardiac Surgeon Dr. Ajay Kaul, along with Chief Cardiothoracic Anaesthesiologist and Critical Care Specialist Dr. Sanjeev Popli and the medical team. SKY Hospital Chairman and Chief Cardiologist Dr. Shyamkishore Lairikyengbam congratulated the surgical team on the procedure. The development marks the reported first use of minimally invasive cardiac surgery in Manipur.

India’s First Approved Dengue Vaccine Expected in Private Market in 2027

New Delhi, September 19: India’s first approved dengue vaccine, Takeda’s Qdenga, is expected to become available in the private market during the first half of 2027. The vaccine has received marketing authorisation from the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation and has been approved for people aged 4 to 60 years. Japanese pharmaceutical company Takeda has entered into an exclusive agreement with Dr Reddy’s Laboratories for promotion and distribution of Qdenga in India’s private healthcare market. Qdenga is a live-attenuated tetravalent vaccine designed to provide protection against all four dengue virus serotypes. According to the source, the WHO reported more than 14.4 million dengue cases and 11,201 deaths globally in 2024.

IMD Issues Yellow Warning for Isolated Heavy Rainfall

Imphal, September 19: The India Meteorological Department’s Imphal Centre has forecast rainfall in several parts of Manipur over the next two days. A yellow warning has been issued for isolated heavy rainfall in some parts of the state today. Isolated rainfall is expected in Tamenglong, Senapati, Ukhrul and Chandel districts, while other areas may receive light to moderate rain. Tomorrow, isolated rainfall is forecast in Senapati, Jiribam, Noney and Pherzawl districts, with light to moderate rain likely elsewhere. Meanwhile, the ICAR Agrometeorological Unit at Lamphelpat reported that Manipur recorded a maximum temperature of 32 degrees Celsius and a minimum of 22 degrees Celsius today.

20th Asian Games Begin in Aichi-Nagoya

Nagoya, September 19: The 20th Asian Games officially began with a grand opening ceremony at Mizuho Park Athletic Stadium in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan. The two-hour ceremony was attended by Emperor Naruhito, Empress Masako, Prince Akishino, Princess Kiko and OCA President Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani. India’s double Olympic medallist Manu Bhaker and kabaddi player Pawan Sehrawat led the 501-member Indian contingent during the athletes’ parade. Imphal, September 19: Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand has extended his best wishes to sportspersons and coaches from Manipur representing India at the 20th Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan. The Games began today and will continue until October 4. The Manipur contingent is representing India in several disciplines, including Sepaktakraw, rowing, cycling, fencing, canoeing and kayaking, boxing, weightlifting, wushu, judo and hockey. The Chief Minister conveyed his wishes to the athletes and coaches competing at the continental sporting event. Manipur Powerlifter Maibam Gulubi to Compete in Türkiye

Imphal, September 19: Manipur powerlifter Maibam Gulubi will represent India at the Asian Junior Classic and Equipped Bench Press Championship in Istanbul, Türkiye, from September 21 to 25. Gulubi will compete in the Junior Women’s 57-kilogram category in both the Classic and Equipped Bench Press events as part of the Powerlifting India team. She is a trainee of the Manipur Powerlifting Association and is currently a student of Kamakhya Pemton College, Hiyangthang, Imphal West. Gulubi’s participation adds another international opportunity for a young athlete from Manipur, as she prepares to compete in both formats of the bench press championship.

Manipur Equestrian Association Seeks Equestrian Course at NSU

Imphal, September 19: The Manipur Equestrian Association (MEA) has urged the National Sports University, Imphal, to introduce equestrian as an academic subject. The appeal was made during a visit by NSU Vice-Chancellor Daljit Singh Chawdhary to the Manipuri Pony Breeding Farm at Lamphelpat, where he inspected facilities related to the breeding and preservation of the Manipuri Pony. MEA Secretary General N. Ibungochoubi renewed the association’s earlier request, stressing the need for systematic training and greater opportunities for young Manipuri riders to compete at national and international levels. The Vice-Chancellor responded positively and said the university could invite MEA and allied organisations for consultations on developing the proposal.

CM Reviews Law and Order; Directs Security for Infrastructure Projects

Imphal, September 17: Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand chaired a Security Coordination Meeting at the Cabinet Hall of the Chief Minister’s Secretariat in Imphal to review the prevailing law and order situation in Manipur. According to a press note, the meeting discussed stringent measures to maintain peace and security, identification of newly vulnerable areas and deployment of security personnel where required. With the working season approaching, NHIDCL authorities and contractors are preparing to intensify infrastructure development works over the next six months. The Chief Minister directed security agencies to provide necessary support to ensure that ongoing projects are not hindered and are executed smoothly and without interruption.

Another Accused Arrested in Alleged Trafficking Case

Imphal, September 17: A special team of Manipur Police and the Social Welfare Department has arrested another accused in an alleged trafficking case involving minor girls from Manipur. The accused, who was reportedly hiding in Delhi, was arrested based on specific information following the busting of the alleged racket on September 10. He was brought to Imphal on transit remand by the special team. Social Welfare Director Sheikh Abdul Hakim was among the team members who arrived at Bir Tikendrajit International Airport around 1:15 p.m. Police had earlier arrested several persons in connection with the case and subsequently received information about alleged associates hiding in Delhi. Further investigation is underway.

Ibobi Criticises Governments Over Prolonged Unrest

Imphal, September 17: Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee President Okram Ibobi has criticised the BJP-led governments in Manipur and at the Centre, alleging failure to protect people and resolve the prolonged unrest in the state. Speaking at a reception for former Chief Secretary Oinam Nabakishore at Congress Bhavan in Imphal, Ibobi alleged that communal clashes had continued since the BJP came to power in Manipur in 2017 and questioned whether there was a “hidden agenda” to disintegrate the state. He also criticised the government’s handling of the unrest. Nabakishore, who previously contested elections on Congress and JDU tickets, was among several new entrants felicitated at the programme.

DMU Research Scholars Call Off Hunger Strike After Fellowship Assurance

Imphal, September 17: Research scholars of Dhanamanjuri University (DMU) have called off their hunger strike demanding a Non-NET fellowship after the state government agreed in principle to provide the fellowship. A Memorandum of Agreement was signed following a meeting at DMU chaired by Commissioner-cum-Secretary, Higher and Technical Education, Ningthoujam Geoffrey. A committee constituted on September 15 will submit recommendations within 15 days on the fellowship amount, duration, eligibility and other modalities. The state government has assured that disbursement of the fellowship will begin within three months of receiving the committee’s recommendations. The development follows the scholars’ agitation seeking financial support for research students.

NIT Manipur, BIS Sign MoU on Standards, Research and Innovation

Imphal, September 17: The National Institute of Technology (NIT) Manipur and the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), Government of India, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to promote cooperation in standardisation, quality, research, training, innovation and capacity building. The MoU was signed at NIT Manipur in the presence of NIT Manipur Director Prof. D.V.L.N. Somayajulu, BIS DDG (East) Dr. Meenakshi Ganesan and other senior officials. NIT Manipur Registrar Prof. Kh. Tomba, Dean of Research and Consultancy Prof. A. Dinamani, faculty members and staff also attended the programme. The agreement is aimed at strengthening collaboration between the institute and BIS in areas related to standards and technical development.

Sugnu Hospital Locked After Death of Pregnant Woman and Unborn Child

Kakching, September 17: An agitated mob locked Sugnu Sub-District Hospital following the death of a pregnant woman and her unborn child while she was being shifted to another hospital. The deceased has been identified as 30-year-old Khaidem Ongbi Malemnganbi of Sugnu. According to her family, she was admitted to the hospital after doctors advised her to do so following a routine check-up. When her blood pressure dropped, the family said hospital authorities advised shifting her elsewhere, but she and her unborn child died while being transported. A JAC has been formed seeking an investigation. JAC Convenor Aheibam Chanthoi alleged negligence by hospital staff and said a complaint had been filed at Sugnu Police Station.

Laipharok Village Authority Alleges Forest Department Damaged Factory Fencing

Laipharok, September 17: Laipharok Maring Village Authority has alleged that the Nonmaiching Forest Range Officer and Forest Department officials damaged the fencing of Marinze Water Factory, located within the village area. The Village Authority claimed that the land on which the factory stands forms part of Laipharok Village and rejected the Forest Department’s alleged claim that the area falls under forest land. It said the village was recognised by the government in 1953 and claimed to possess a 1969 document issued by the Forest Settlement Officer stating that the area does not fall under forest land. The Authority also alleged that the structure was damaged without prior eviction notice and urged authorities to refrain from similar action.

Handloom and Textiles Staff Protest Over Appointment of Director

Imphal, September 17: Employees of the Directorate of Handloom and Textiles at Lamphelpat have launched an agitation demanding continuation of a technocrat as Director and withdrawal of the recent order appointing a bureaucrat to the vacant post. The Handloom and Textiles Employees Union said the protest was taken up following a decision of the union. Staff reportedly locked the office and began a pen-down strike along with a sit-in protest. Union President Ching Luwang said the employees would continue their agitation over the demand. The union has also warned of intensifying the protest if its demand for continuation of a technocrat as Director is not addressed.

Handloom Corporation Calls for Wider Markets for Local Products

Imphal, September 17: Managing Director of the Manipur Handloom and Handicrafts Development Corporation Limited, Elangbam Jeeten, has stressed the need to improve marketing and create wider opportunities for local handloom and handicraft products. Jeeten said artisans should not limit themselves to producing only for consumers within the state but should develop products based on market demand and buyer preferences. He called for greater focus on markets outside Manipur and exports. Jeeten said the Corporation would support artisans through better market linkages and infrastructure. He also highlighted the need for improved road connectivity to the Urban Haat at Nilakuthi. The Corporation Chairman urged authorities to construct a Bailey bridge linking the Urban Haat with the main road.

Imphal, September 17: A State Handloom Expo has been inaugurated at Urban Haat, Nilakuthi, featuring around 60 stalls showcasing handloom and handicraft products from across Manipur. Chief Secretary Reviews Welfare Schemes During Kangpokpi Visit

CM Launches Swachhata Hi Seva 2026 and Clean Himalayan Hill Cities Initiative

Imphal, September 17: Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand launched the ‘Swachhata Hi Seva 2026’ campaign and the ‘Clean Himalayan Hill Cities Initiative’ at the Chief Minister’s Secretariat in Imphal. The Swachhata Hi Seva campaign will be observed from September 17 to October 2, focusing on cleanliness drives, waste segregation, Safai Mitra welfare, youth participation and waste-to-wealth initiatives. The Chief Minister appealed to citizens, Urban Local Bodies and other stakeholders to participate actively and make cleanliness a sustained practice. The 100-day Clean Himalayan Hill Cities Initiative will focus on sanitation, waste management and preservation of heritage sites, including Ima Keithel, Kangla Fort, Cheirao Ching, Marjing Polo Statue, Loktak Lake and Andro Santhei Natural Park.

2,835 Beneficiaries Receive PMFME Subsidies

Imphal West, September 17: Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand distributed subsidies to 2,835 beneficiaries under the Pradhan Mantri Formalisation of Micro Food Processing Enterprises (PMFME) Scheme at Yumnam Leikai Yumjao Lairembi Lampak. The assistance was provided in connection with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s birthday. While some beneficiaries received cheques, others received the subsidy through Direct Benefit Transfer. Eligible Self Help Group members engaged in food processing had earlier received Rs. 5,000 as the first instalment, with applications submitted between 2022 and 2024. The Chief Minister said the assistance would help small food-processing businesses upgrade and expand. He also appealed to people to avoid bandhs and blockades and support efforts towards restoring peace and normalcy in Manipur.

BJP Manipur Holds Blood Donation Camp

Imphal, September 17: BJP Manipur Pradesh organised a blood donation camp under the nationwide Seva Sankalp Abhiyan. The programme was held to mark Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s 25 years of public life and service. MLA Says NRC Cut-Off Year Needs Thorough Discussion

Imphal, September 17: A month-long 6th Langbal Keithel cum Expo 2026, organised by DS Enterprises, began at Hapta Kangjeibung in the Palace Compound. Speaking at the inaugural programme, Keirao MLA Lourembam Rameshwor said the cut-off year for updating the National Register of Citizens (NRC) requires thorough discussion. He said the government has adopted a resolution to update the NRC with 1951 as the base year, but stressed that the cut-off year is also an important issue that needs further deliberation. Imphal, September 17: Head of the Department of Ophthalmology at JNIMS, Imphal, Prof. Rajkumari Vidyarani, has been selected for the “ACOIN National Lady of the Year 2025” award by the Association of Community Ophthalmologists of India (ACOIN). Thang-Ta Association Observes Pisatao Eratpa at Irilbung

Imphal, September 17: Huyen Lalong Manipur Thang-Ta Cultural Association, a Thang-Ta school at Irilbung, observed Pisatao Eratpa, worshipped as the deity of tools, machines and craftsmanship. India’s Cheetah Population Reaches 52

New Delhi, September 17: India’s cheetah population has reached 52, four years after the animals were translocated from Namibia, South Africa and Botswana. According to the report “Four Years of Cheetahs in India”, 32 cubs have been born in India since the reintroduction programme began. Of the current 52 cheetahs, 49 are in Kuno National Park and three are in Gandhi Sagar Sanctuary. Of the 12 cheetahs brought from South Africa in 2023, eight have survived along with 10 India-born offspring. Kuno National Park said the presence of breeding females and survival of second-generation cubs indicate a consolidation phase in the cheetah reintroduction programme.

Junior Women’s Asia Cup Hockey Captain Shileima Chanu Arrives in Imphal

Imphal, September 17: Khundrakpam Shileima Chanu, captain of the Indian team that won the Junior Women’s Asia Cup Hockey title, arrived in Imphal today. Members of Manipur Hockey and others accorded her a warm welcome at Imphal International Airport. Speaking to the media, Shileima said she was happy to represent India as captain and contribute to the team’s title victory. She said she would continue working hard for further achievements. Posterior Hockey Academy coach Kshetrimayum Romesh said hockey has strong potential in Manipur and expressed hope that more players from the state would emerge at the national level. India defeated hosts China in the final to win the Junior Women’s Asia Cup.
