Protesters Injured During Census Agitation

Imphal, August 16: One member of the JFD Students’ Wing was injured and two women protesters reportedly fell unconscious after security personnel used a stun grenade to disperse agitators at the Directorate of Census Operations office today. JFD Students’ Wing member Khangembam Pilot sustained a leg injury, while the two women were also taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. According to the organisation, security forces had warned protesters to clear the area before using the stun grenade. The incident occurred during the students’ protest against Census training, with the protesters demanding that the Census be deferred until updation of the National Register of Citizens.

JFD Demands Action Against Police Over Student Injuries

Imphal, August 16: The JFD Students’ Wing has condemned the injuries sustained by students during today’s protest against Census training and demanded action against the police personnel allegedly responsible. Speaking to reporters at WAL Club, Wangkhei Angom Leikai, the organisation alleged that security forces used tear gas and other measures against students during their democratic protest. JFD urged the State Government to take action within 24 hours against those responsible for the injuries. The organisation also appealed to government employees to support its movement against the Census exercise, arguing that the agitation is being carried out in the interest of the people and future generations.

JFD Announces Intensified Anti-Census Movement

Imphal, August 16: JFD Convener Jitendra Ningombam has announced plans to intensify the movement demanding updation of the NRC before the Census. Speaking to reporters at WAL Club, Wangkhei Angom Leikai, Jitendra said Meira Paibis in different localities would begin torch rallies from tonight. He announced that a public meeting would be held at Khwairamband Ima Market tomorrow to decide further courses of action. JFD also urged people across the hill and valley districts to gather at their respective Deputy Commissioner’s offices and demand deferment of the Census. The organisation appealed to people to refrain from online self-enumeration and the upcoming door-to-door enumeration.

Thangmeiband Meira Paibi Supports JFD

Imphal, August 16: Thangmeiband Ima Kongthonganbi Meira Paibi has extended support to the movement led by JFD against conducting the Census before updation of the NRC. The women’s group organised a sit-in protest today as part of the ongoing agitation. Speaking to the media, Secretary Ph. Bina appealed to the government to consider the interests and concerns of the people before proceeding with the Census exercise. She warned that the agitation would be intensified if the Centre and State Government failed to respond to the demands. The group’s position comes amid growing protests against the Census exercise in several parts of Manipur.

Biren, Govindas Leave for New Delhi

Imphal, August 16: Former Manipur Chief Minister Nongthombam Biren Singh and State Home Minister Govindas Konthoujam left Imphal for New Delhi today. Neither leader disclosed the official purpose of the visit when approached by media persons at Imphal airport. According to a reliable source, the two leaders travelled to the national capital following an invitation from Union Home Minister Amit Shah to discuss the situation in Manipur. They are also expected to attend a meeting at the BJP national headquarters. A high-level meeting involving the Union Home Minister is reportedly likely. Meanwhile, BJP National General Secretary (Organisation) B.L. Santosh is also expected to visit Imphal and meet BJP MLAs and other party leaders.

Manipur Celebrates 80th Independence Day

Imphal, August 16: Manipur celebrated India’s 80th Independence Day with a state-level function at the 1st Manipur Rifles Parade Ground in Imphal on Saturday. Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand unfurled the national flag and received the salute from 23 march-past contingents following the Guard of Honour. Ministers, MLAs, senior government officials and members of the public attended the programme. In his address, the Chief Minister condemned the recent killings in Kangpokpi district and appealed to all communities to strengthen mutual understanding. IDPs Hoist Black Flags on Independence Day

Bishnupur, August 16: Internally Displaced Persons staying in relief camps across Manipur hoisted black flags on Saturday’s Independence Day, expressing disappointment over their continued displacement. Black flags were displayed at camps including Moirang College and Kwakta Sericulture in Bishnupur district. The displaced families said they wanted to celebrate Independence Day as Indian citizens but were unable to fully participate in the Har Ghar Tiranga campaign while remaining away from their homes. They also raised concerns over delays in receiving relief assistance. The IDPs appealed to the government to facilitate their safe return and rehabilitation in their respective native places at the earliest.

LJP Manipur Criticises Deputy CM Nemcha Kipgen

Imphal, August 16: Lok Janashakti Party (Ram Vilas) Manipur State President Khoirom Deepu has criticised Deputy Chief Minister Nemcha Kipgen over her reported remarks favouring her own community. Speaking at a press conference at the party office in Keishampat, Deepu termed the reported remarks inappropriate and unacceptable. He linked his criticism to the recent killing of two Liangmai Naga villagers at Lanka Nuilong in Kangpokpi district and questioned the Deputy Chief Minister’s role in restoring peace. Deepu also referred to the earlier killing of six Nagas from Konshakhul. He urged political parties and the government to prioritise peace and avoid exploiting community divisions for political purposes.

Samajwadi Party Calls for Change in Manipur

Imphal, August 16: Samajwadi Party Manipur President Konthoujam Bishorjit has said the state’s problems will not be resolved as long as the BJP remains in power. Speaking at a reception for around 20 former BJP and Congress workers who joined the Samajwadi Party, Bishorjit demanded that the Census exercise be stopped until NRC updation. He also condemned the recent killing of two Liangmai Naga civilians, alleging that such incidents would continue under the present government. Bishorjit said the government should step down if it cannot protect civilians and claimed that the Samajwadi Party could work towards restoring peace within four months. He appealed to like-minded parties to unite against the BJP.

DoNER Approves Three Polo Fields in Manipur

Imphal, August 16: Art and Culture and Tourism Minister Khuraijam Loken has said the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region has approved three polo infrastructure projects in Manipur and will facilitate training for players under an international coach. Loken made the announcement during a condolence programme for veteran polo promoter Yumnam Jilla Singh at Wahengkhuman. Jilla, who passed away on August 15 at the age of 88, had dedicated decades to promoting Sagol Kangjei, the traditional form of polo. The approved projects are proposed at Mapal Kangjeibung, Marjing and Paobitek. Loken said the projects would strengthen infrastructure and help promote Manipur’s traditional sport internationally.

22nd Students’ Martyrdom Day Observed

Bishnupur, August 16: The 22nd Students’ Martyrdom Day was observed today in memory of Pebam Chittaranjan, who sacrificed his life protesting against the Armed Forces Special Powers Act in 2004. Commemorative programmes were held at his memorial sites in Thanilkhun and Bishnupur Bazaar, where people paid floral tributes. A programme was also held at TYC Club in Takhelambam Leikai after students from Imphal College marched to the venue. Committee Chairman Hijam Roshan recalled Chittaranjan’s sacrifice and criticised the continued presence of AFSPA and Central forces in Manipur. He called for proper judicial action in alleged human rights violation cases and urged people to remain vigilant.

Two CRPF Personnel Injured in Khergao Gun Attack

Imphal, August 16: Two CRPF personnel were injured in a gun attack while attempting to arrest a suspected drug smuggler at Khergao Awang Leikai under Porompat Police Station in Imphal East. According to Impact News sources, a combined team of CRPF and Imphal West District Commandos went to the area in the early hours of August 14 to arrest Md. Amir Khan in connection with a drug-related case. Gunfire reportedly broke out as security personnel attempted to apprehend him at his residence. One CRPF personnel sustained a bullet injury to the neck, while the driver of the CRPF vehicle was also injured. Both were taken to RIMS Hospital.

Gunfire Erupts During Drug Operation in Jiribam

Jiribam, August 16: Gunfire erupted during a security operation against suspected drug traffickers at Chaudharykhal village under Borobekra Police Station in Jiribam district. According to police sources, the incident occurred at around 6 pm on Friday after security personnel received information about suspected drug-related activities. A joint team of police and CRPF personnel launched an operation to apprehend the suspected traffickers when unidentified persons allegedly opened fire. Security personnel retaliated, forcing the attackers to flee. An AK-56 rifle and several rounds of ammunition were recovered from the spot. Police also detained several persons suspected to be involved in the incident for questioning.

Man Wanted in NCB Cases Arrested

Senapati, August 16: Police have arrested a man wanted in multiple cases registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act. A team from Mao Police Station in Senapati district apprehended Raju Domani, son of A. Raju, from Moreh Ward Number 2. Police also seized a silver Hyundai Creta bearing registration number WB-02AN-1790 during the operation. The arrested person has been handed over to the Narcotics Control Bureau’s Imphal Zonal Unit for further investigation. Authorities are examining his alleged involvement in the cases registered under the NDPS Act as part of continuing efforts to crack down on drug-related activities and trafficking networks in the state.

Arms and Explosives Recovered in Churachandpur

Churachandpur, August 16: Security forces recovered a cache of arms, ammunition and explosives during search operations in vulnerable peripheral areas of Manipur. The recovery was made in Churachandpur district on August 14. Security personnel recovered one locally made single-barrel gun, one locally made SMC carbine, one locally made .32 pistol, six live rounds of .32 pistol ammunition, two Baofeng handheld communication sets and one improvised mortar, locally known as Pumpi. The recovery forms part of continuing search operations being conducted by security forces across several districts to locate illegal weapons and military stores amid ongoing security concerns in the state.

Indigenous Folk Fiesta Held in Imphal

Imphal, August 16: The first Indigenous Folk Fiesta 2026 was held at the auditorium of Jawaharlal Nehru Manipur Dance Academy to promote the diverse cultural traditions of Manipur’s indigenous communities. Organised by the Federation of Haomee, the one-day festival brought together representatives of eight communities. Traditional dances, songs and other cultural performances were presented by participants from Chandel, Kangpokpi, Bishnupur and Imphal West. Lamlai MLA Khongbantabam Ibomcha appreciated the initiative and said lack of awareness about the state’s diverse communities has contributed to misunderstandings and divisions. Organisers said the festival aims to create a larger platform for indigenous communities in future editions.

COCOMI Condemns Killing of Liangmai Villagers

Imphal, August 16: The Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity has condemned the killing of two Liangmai villagers and injuries to two others in an alleged ambush at Langka, also known as Taniulung village, in Kangpokpi district on August 14. In a statement, COCOMI alleged that the attack was carried out by Kuki armed groups and said it came amid what it described as a lack of justice in the killing of six Liangmai civilians in June. The organisation termed the repeated attacks on indigenous communities a serious escalation of violence and demanded justice for the victims. It also urged authorities to ensure the safety and security of civilians.

Heiningsoi Eco-Tourism Park to Get Major Push

Imphal, August 16: Heiningsoi Eco-Tourism Park in Wangoi Assembly Constituency is set to be developed as a major tourism destination, according to Art and Culture and Tourism Minister Khuraijam Loken. The Minister inspected ongoing development works at Yumnam Huidrom Makha Leikai and reviewed the project’s progress with officials. Loken said the scenic area, located near the Mayai Lambi and surrounded by ponds and greenery, has significant eco-tourism potential. The project is being developed with SASCI funding, while a proposal has also been submitted to the Ministry of Tourism for additional financial support. Loken also inspected the proposed site for Mayai Lambi Dramatic Union.

Imphal, August 16: An exhibition titled “Journey into Manipur’s Past” opened at the Advanced Research Consortium Library and Archive at Singjamei Bheigyabati Leikai today. The exhibition features rare photographs of Manipur sourced from the British Library and will continue until August 19. Retired IAS officer R.K. Nimai inaugurated the exhibition and highlighted the importance of the photographs in helping the public and researchers understand Manipur’s history, traditions and lifestyle in earlier times. Yaima Eye Hospital Optometry Department In-charge Arambam Sushma said increasing use of digital devices has contributed to rising cases of eye strain and other vision-related problems. She also highlighted concerns over cataracts and retinal problems among elderly people and myopia among children. The organisers advised children to undergo eye examinations every three months and elderly people every six months. The camp provided screening and guidance on eye-care services and treatment options.

Weaving Loom Handed Over to Differently-Abled Beneficiary

Imphal, August 16: A weaving loom was handed over to Moirangmayum Echal, a person with disability, as part of an initiative for the welfare and economic empowerment of differently-abled persons. The initiative was carried out by the Relief Centre for the Welfare of Differently Abled Person Manipur, Singjamei Chingamathak, with support from Ngangbam Champrajini, board member of the Manipur Apex Handloom Weavers and Handicrafts Artisan Cooperative Society. In the final, Malemnganba defeated fellow Bishnupur player Martin Ingudam 4-15, 15-12, 15-7. Agartala, August 13: Patriots’ Day was observed at several locations across Tripura today in remembrance of Manipur’s fallen heroes. Observances were held at Kamalpur in Dhalai district, Jolabasa in North Tripura and Berimura, Abhoynagar and Nalgoria in West Tripura, among other locations. A mass rally was also organised in Kamalpur town. In Agartala, the Manipuri Literary and Cultural Forum and Puthiba Welfare and Cultural Society organised programmes to mark Patriots’ Day. R.K. Meghen Opposes Any Move to Cede Manipur Territory

Imphal, August 13: Former UNLF chairman R.K. Meghen has said any move to give away Manipur’s territory in an effort to strengthen ties with Myanmar cannot be justified. Speaking on the sidelines of the 57th Patriots’ Day observance organised by the Organising Committee and Lamyanba Publications Trust at Lamyanba Shanglen, Meghen said any attempt to compromise Manipur’s territorial boundary must be opposed. He stressed that Manipur has historically maintained a distinct identity and recalled the resistance mounted during the Anglo-Manipuri War of 1891. Meghen urged people, particularly the youth, to demonstrate courage, unity and patriotism and collectively work to protect Manipur’s interests.

Six Student Organisations Call for Strong Patriotism

Imphal, August 13: Coordinator of six student organisations—AMSU, MSF, DESAM, KSA, SUK and AIMS—Hijam Roshan has stressed the need to uphold the spirit of patriotism demonstrated by Manipur’s forefathers. Speaking at the 135th Patriots’ Day observance at GP Women’s College, Roshan said laws alone cannot protect the state without a strong sense of patriotism among its people. He called upon the younger generation to understand the sacrifices made by their predecessors in safeguarding Manipur. NIA Arrests Alleged UKNA Finance Head in Bomb Blast Case

Imphal, August 13: The National Investigation Agency has arrested S. Palal Kuki, alleged Finance Head of proscribed United Kuki National Army, in connection with the April 7 bomb attack at Tronglaobi Awang Leikai in Bishnupur district. The blast killed two minor siblings and critically injured their mother. According to the NIA, Palal Kuki was arrested on July 23 from Old Gelmol in Churachandpur during a joint operation involving Manipur Police, Assam Rifles, Army and CRPF. Investigators allegedly linked him to several other incidents, including the December 2025 Torbung blast and firing incidents in 2026. A Special NIA Court in Imphal remanded him to 10 days’ police custody.

Security Forces Recover Arms in Senapati

Senapati, August 13: Security forces recovered a cache of weapons and ammunition during a search operation at Kailenjang village under Senapati Police Station today. The recovery included five single-barrel guns, one 9mm pistol and two Chinese hand grenades. Security personnel also recovered 13 rounds of ammunition of different calibres along with 33 empty cases. The operation was conducted as part of continuing security searches in vulnerable areas of Manipur. The recovered weapons and ammunition have been taken into custody for further investigation. Security forces have been conducting intensified search operations across several districts following the recovery of a large number of illegal weapons in recent months.

29 NEET-PG Candidates Seek Centre Shift From Churachandpur

Imphal, August 13: Twenty-nine Meitei and Naga candidates appearing for NEET-PG 2026 have reportedly been allotted an examination centre in Churachandpur district, prompting concerns over their ability to appear for the examination. The candidates have submitted representations to Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla and Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand seeking intervention to shift the examination centre. They have also approached the concerned authorities for necessary arrangements. The candidates cited the prevailing situation and expressed apprehension about travelling to Churachandpur for the examination. During the recently held NEET examination, candidates allotted centres in Churachandpur were reportedly allowed to appear at an Imphal centre following arrangements by the authorities.

JFD Warns of Resistance to Census Training

Imphal, August 13: Campaign for Just and Fair Delimitation Finance Secretary Sunil Karam has warned that government officials conducting training related to the Census will face democratic resistance. Speaking at a public meeting at Itham Mamang Leikai Community Hall in Imphal East, Karam said all Census-related training programmes would be opposed. He urged members of the public to inform the organisation if they become aware of any training venue. Karam also alleged that Manipur Police should not use excessive force against JFD volunteers during their agitation. The JFD has been opposing the Census until updation of the National Register of Citizens and resettlement of internally displaced persons.

PICK Demands NRC Updation Before Census

Imphal, August 13: Peace and Integrity Committee Kyamgei Convenor Chingakham Meghachandra has urged elected representatives to channel the enthusiasm generated by the Har Ghar Tiranga campaign towards the demand for updation of the National Register of Citizens. He was speaking during a “No NRC, No Census” human-chain protest along Kyamgei Pal Ahambi Road. The protest was jointly organised by PICK, Kongba Irong Youth Development Club, Kongba Irong Meira Paibi and All Kyamgei Nupi Chaokhat Lup. Protesters demanded NRC updation using 1951 as the base year, resettlement of internally displaced persons before the Census and postponement of the Census, citing Section 3 of the Census Act, 1948.

Khurai MLA Questions Census Before NRC Updation

Imphal, August 13: Khurai MLA L. Sushindro has acknowledged growing public discontent with the government while maintaining that he would continue working for the welfare of the people. Speaking at the Second Open State-Level Patriotic Song Competition organised by BJP Khurai Mandal and the Sushindro Foundation, the MLA questioned the decision to conduct the Census before updation of the National Register of Citizens. Sushindro also criticised the Congress, alleging that its policies had contributed to Manipur’s social and political turmoil and created challenges for the indigenous population. His remarks came amid growing opposition from various groups to the proposed Census exercise.

Ukhrul MLA Urges Priority for NH-202 and NH-102A

New Delhi, August 13: Ukhrul MLA Ram Muivah has apprised Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari of the poor condition of NH-202 and NH-102A in Manipur. During a meeting in New Delhi on Wednesday, Muivah submitted details on the condition of the highways and highlighted difficulties faced by people due to delays in road construction. Gadkari expressed concern over delays in handing over land to NHIDCL, particularly for the Ukhrul Bypass and Shangshak–Tengnoupal sectors. He also noted the impact of court intervention on certain stretches. Gadkari directed the MoRTH Secretary to prioritise the two highways and asked Director Narendra Sharma to visit Ukhrul and submit a report.

Meitei Leepun Holds Blood Donation Camp at RIMS

Imphal, August 13: Meitei Leepun observed Athoubasingi Ningsing Numit with a blood donation camp at the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences today. Around 70 volunteers donated blood in remembrance of the departed heroes of Manipur. The organisation said the blood donation drive would be held annually as part of its commemoration. It also announced plans to conduct regular blood donation programmes at RIMS, JNIMS, Shija Hospital and Babina Hospital. The expo began on August 12 and will continue until August 15, featuring around 600 stalls. The Manipur stall has attracted visitors interested in a variety of Thangjing-based food products, with several products also being purchased. The initiative aims to highlight Manipur’s potential in fox nut production, create awareness and explore wider marketing opportunities. The stall is being supported under the Makhana Development Scheme of the Union Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare.

Imphal, August 13: Women vendors of Khwairamband Ima Market observed their monthly cleanliness programme today. The vendors traditionally stop business activities on the first day of every Meitei lunar month to participate in the cleanliness drive. Commonwealth Games silver medallist Chanambam Rishikanta attended the inaugural programme along with association officials and other dignitaries. CM Gives 15-Day Deadline to Surrender Illegal Weapons

Imphal, August 12: Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand has appealed to anyone possessing illegal weapons in the hills and valley to surrender them within 15 days through their respective MLA or Superintendent of Police. Speaking at a programme on “Initiatives towards Bringing Normalcy in Manipur” at the 1st Battalion Manipur Rifles Parade Ground, the Chief Minister warned that those failing to surrender the weapons would face legal action. More than 1,400 weapons recovered since February 5 were displayed during the programme. DGP Mukesh Singh said security forces had recovered 1,422 firearms, over 7,000 rounds of ammunition and 1,137 explosives between February and August.

Government Warns of NSA Action Against Highway Extortion

Imphal, August 12: Home Minister Govindas Konthoujam has warned of strict action against individuals and organisations allegedly involved in extortion, intimidation and harassment of transporters along National Highways. Speaking at the programme on “Initiatives towards Bringing Normalcy in Manipur,” the Home Minister said the government is considering booking such offenders under the National Security Act. The programme also featured the distribution of the Department of Information and Public Relations publication “Manipur Marches to Peace” and screening of a short video highlighting government initiatives. Deputy Chief Minister Losii Dikho, Minister Khuraijam Loken, MLAs and senior civil and police officials attended the programme.

Nine Houses, Church Reportedly Burnt in Tokpa Naga

Kangpokpi, August 12: Heavy gunfire and arson were reported at Tokpa Naga village near Tumnoupokpi Thangal village in Kangpokpi district at around 9.30 pm on Tuesday. According to information received by Impact News, the attack was suspected to have been carried out by Kuki militants. The Tokpa Naga Village Authority alleged that armed men opened indiscriminate fire and torched nine residential houses, a church and other properties, affecting several families. The Village Authority and Liangmai Naga Council condemned the incident and called for an immediate investigation, FIR and arrest of those responsible. They also sought adequate security, relief and compensation for affected families.

KSO Kamjong Raises Concern Over Alleged Economic Embargo

Kamjong, August 12: The Kuki Students’ Organisation, Kamjong District, has raised concern over what it described as the continuation of an economic embargo against Kuki civilians for more than five months. The organisation claimed that the situation has affected patients and other vulnerable sections of the community, alleging that Kuki residents remain unable to access District Hospital, Kamjong. KSO urged the government and district administration to ensure non-discriminatory access to healthcare facilities. The organisation also demanded the establishment of a separate hospital at Chassad for the Kuki population. The demands come amid continuing tensions and restrictions affecting movement and access to essential services in parts of the district.

JFD Students’ Wing Disrupts Enumerator Training in Nambol

Bishnupur, August 12: Members of the JFD Students’ Wing interrupted a training session for Census enumerators and supervisors at SK Women’s College, Nambol, ahead of the house-listing exercise scheduled to begin on August 17. The training session was scheduled to be conducted in four phases until August 25. Protesters reportedly asked the trainees to stop the session, following which they left the conference hall. The hall was later locked, while protesters demonstrated outside the college gate carrying pamphlets with slogans including “NO NRC, NO CENSUS.” Police and commando personnel arrived at the site and arrested some protesters following a reported scuffle.

Grenade Found at FCI Member’s Residence in Koirengei

Imphal, August 12: A hand grenade was reportedly found at the gate of the residence of Gurumayum Kanakumar Sharma, a Ministry-appointed member of the Food Corporation of India, at Koirengei Nepali Basti in Imphal East. The grenade was reportedly accompanied by a note carrying a warning and demanding that certain alleged demands be fulfilled. The incident was reported to Heingang Police Station at around 6 am. Police inspected the site before the Manipur Bomb Disposal Team removed the explosive. The grenade was subsequently taken to Heingang Chingol, where it was safely disposed of at around 10 am. Police are investigating the incident and the circumstances surrounding the threat.

Bihar Man Reportedly Found Dead at Construction Site

Imphal, August 12: A man from Bihar was reportedly found dead under suspicious circumstances near an under-construction house at Mayang Imphal Chirai Makha on Tuesday night. The deceased, identified as Manoj, was engaged in construction work at the residence of Oinam Joymangol. He was reportedly found dead near the under-construction building at around 8.30 pm. Police have arrested another Bihar native, identified as Md Manzhar, who was working with Manoj and is suspected to be involved in the incident. Police have launched an investigation, while the deceased’s body has been kept at the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences morgue for post-mortem examination.

Three Arrested With 142 Bottles of Codeine-Based Contraband

Imphal, August 12: A joint team of Heingang Police Station and Imphal East Commandos arrested three persons during an anti-narcotics operation at Mantripukhri Bazar on Tuesday. Acting on reliable intelligence, the security team intercepted the suspects and recovered 142 bottles of codeine-based contraband. Police identified the arrested persons as 28-year-old Mohammad Akilur Rahaman, 21-year-old Aribam Iftar and 44-year-old Md Iqubal Khan. The seized items reportedly included 116 bottles of Cody Late and 26 bottles of DelStal. A Hyundai i20 car was also seized during the operation. Police said the arrests were made as part of ongoing efforts to curb the illegal trade and distribution of narcotic substances.

Woman Arrested With 22.75 Kg Suspected Ganja

Imphal, August 12: Imphal East Commandos, along with women police personnel and in coordination with 28 Assam Rifles, arrested a 27-year-old woman in connection with an alleged drug-peddling case on Tuesday. The woman, identified as Oinam Ongbi Tenden Devi of Sekta Awang Leikai, Imphal East, was arrested during an operation based on information available to the security personnel. Police reportedly recovered 22.75 kilograms of suspected ganja and a mobile phone from her possession. The arrest forms part of continuing anti-narcotics operations being conducted across Manipur. The seized substance and other materials have been taken into custody as investigation into the alleged drug-peddling activities continues.

Stolen Creta Recovered in Churachandpur

Churachandpur, August 12: Churachandpur Police recovered and handed over a stolen black Hyundai Creta to a Delhi Police team following a request from Delhi Police. The vehicle was recovered at Kangvai in Churachandpur district and subsequently handed over to a personnel of Uttam Nagar Police Station under Dwarka District, Delhi. Police identified the vehicle through its chassis and engine numbers during the recovery and handover process. The operation highlights coordination between police authorities in Manipur and Delhi in tracing and recovering stolen vehicles. The recovered vehicle was formally handed over to the visiting Delhi Police personnel for further legal proceedings and investigation in connection with the theft case.

JNIMS Teachers’ Association Releases White Paper

Imphal, August 12: The Teachers’ Association of Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences has released its first White Paper titled “Healthcare Governance, Medical Education and Institutional Excellence in Manipur,” highlighting concerns over the functioning of JNIMS. Speaking at Manipur Press Club, Association General Secretary Pahel Meitei Soibam alleged that the absence of a regular Director and communication gaps have affected healthcare delivery. Churachandpur Records Highest Dengue Cases in Manipur

Churachandpur, August 12: Churachandpur district has reported the highest number of confirmed dengue cases in Manipur this year, with 105 positive cases detected among 442 people tested so far. District Malaria Officer Dr Liangoumuan Samte said the health department has intensified preventive measures in response to the increase. Thermal fogging operations are being carried out from house to house, covering areas within a 50-to-100-metre radius. The department is also conducting source-reduction drives and door-to-door awareness campaigns in coordination with civil society organisations, village chiefs, youth clubs, ASHA workers and church leaders. No dengue-related deaths have been reported in the district so far this year.

Infant’s Body Recovered From Athokpam Dam

Thoubal, August 12: Police recovered the body of a few-days-old infant from Athokpam Dam above the Arong River in Thoubal district on Wednesday morning. According to a notice issued by Thoubal Police, the infant’s body has been kept at the JNIMS Mortuary. Police have appealed to family members or anyone who can establish the identity of the infant to come forward and claim the body within 48 hours. Authorities have assured that the identity of any claimant will be kept strictly confidential. Police are seeking information that could help establish the identity of the infant and determine the circumstances under which the body was found at the dam.

Manipur Observes National Anti-Ragging Day

Imphal, August 12: Manipur joined the observance of National Anti-Ragging Day as the nationwide Anti-Ragging Week was launched on Wednesday. The Anti-Ragging Committee of Dhanamanjuri University organised an awareness programme at the DM College of Arts Multipurpose Hall. DMU Professor W. Chandbabu said the university, with around 12,000 students, has reported no incidents of ragging and has maintained a conducive academic environment. DMU Professor Calls for Separate Directorate for Libraries

Imphal, August 12: Dhanamanjuri University School of Humanities Dean Professor S. Lanchenba has called for the establishment of a separate Directorate for Libraries in Manipur. He made the appeal while attending a National Librarian’s Day programme organised by the Department of Art and Culture and State Central Library at Nityaipat Chuthek. Professor Lanchenba said separating library administration from the Department of Art and Culture and establishing a dedicated directorate could improve the functioning and condition of libraries across the state. BJP Defends Government’s ₹10,000 Assistance to Women

Kakching, August 12: BJP Manipur Pradesh General Secretary P. Premananda has criticised what he described as attempts to misinterpret the State Government’s initiative to provide ₹10,000 financial assistance to women. Speaking at a one-day Mandal Sammelan organised by BJP Sugnu Mandal at Chairel in Kakching district, Premananda said the assistance was initiated following Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand’s appeal to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He said the ₹10,000 payment is the first instalment of assistance expected to total ₹50,000 in three instalments for financially constrained women affected by the prevailing crisis. Premananda alleged that some ineligible persons were attempting to misuse the scheme and portray the government negatively.

CM Gives 15-Day Deadline to Surrender Illegal Weapons

Imphal, August 12: Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand has appealed to anyone possessing illegal weapons in the hills and valley to surrender them within 15 days through their respective MLA or Superintendent of Police. Speaking at a programme on “Initiatives towards Bringing Normalcy in Manipur” at the 1st Battalion Manipur Rifles Parade Ground, the Chief Minister warned that those failing to surrender the weapons would face legal action. More than 1,400 weapons recovered since February 5 were displayed during the programme. DGP Mukesh Singh said security forces had recovered 1,422 firearms, over 7,000 rounds of ammunition and 1,137 explosives between February and August.

Government Warns of NSA Action Against Highway Extortion

Imphal, August 12: Home Minister Govindas Konthoujam has warned of strict action against individuals and organisations allegedly involved in extortion, intimidation and harassment of transporters along National Highways. Speaking at the programme on “Initiatives towards Bringing Normalcy in Manipur,” the Home Minister said the government is considering booking such offenders under the National Security Act. The programme also featured the distribution of the Department of Information and Public Relations publication “Manipur Marches to Peace” and screening of a short video highlighting government initiatives. Deputy Chief Minister Losii Dikho, Minister Khuraijam Loken, MLAs and senior civil and police officials attended the programme.

Nine Houses, Church Reportedly Burnt in Tokpa Naga

Kangpokpi, August 12: Heavy gunfire and arson were reported at Tokpa Naga village near Tumnoupokpi Thangal village in Kangpokpi district at around 9.30 pm on Tuesday. According to information received by Impact News, the attack was suspected to have been carried out by Kuki militants. The Tokpa Naga Village Authority alleged that armed men opened indiscriminate fire and set fire to nine residential houses, a church and other properties, affecting several families. The Village Authority and Liangmai Naga Council condemned the incident and called for an immediate investigation, FIR and arrest of those responsible. They also sought adequate security, relief and compensation for affected families.

KSO Kamjong Raises Concern Over Alleged Economic Embargo

Kamjong, August 12: The Kuki Students’ Organisation, Kamjong District, has raised concern over what it described as the continuation of an economic embargo against Kuki civilians for more than five months. The organisation claimed that the situation has affected patients and other vulnerable sections of the community, alleging that Kuki residents remain unable to access District Hospital, Kamjong. KSO urged the government and district administration to ensure non-discriminatory access to healthcare facilities. The organisation also demanded the establishment of a separate hospital at Chassad for the Kuki population. The demands come amid continuing tensions and restrictions affecting movement and access to essential services in parts of the district.

JFD Students’ Wing Disrupts Enumerator Training in Nambol

Bishnupur, August 12: Members of the JFD Students’ Wing interrupted a training session for Census enumerators and supervisors at SK Women’s College, Nambol, ahead of the house-listing exercise scheduled to begin on August 17. The training session was scheduled to be conducted in four phases until August 25. Protesters reportedly asked the trainees to stop the session, following which they left the conference hall. The hall was later locked, while protesters demonstrated outside the college gate carrying pamphlets with slogans including “NO NRC, NO CENSUS.” Police and commando personnel arrived at the site and arrested some protesters following a reported scuffle.

Grenade Found at FCI Member’s Residence in Koirengei

Imphal, August 12: A hand grenade was reportedly found at the gate of the residence of Gurumayum Kanakumar Sharma, a Ministry-appointed member of the Food Corporation of India, at Koirengei Nepali Basti in Imphal East. The grenade was reportedly accompanied by a note carrying a warning and demanding that certain alleged demands be fulfilled. The incident was reported to Heingang Police Station at around 6 am. Police inspected the site before the Manipur Bomb Disposal Team removed the explosive. The grenade was subsequently taken to Heingang Chingol, where it was safely disposed of at around 10 am. Police are investigating the incident and the circumstances surrounding the threat.

Bihar Man Reportedly Found Dead at Construction Site

Imphal, August 12: A man from Bihar was reportedly found dead under suspicious circumstances near an under-construction house at Mayang Imphal Chirai Makha on Tuesday night. The deceased, identified as Manoj, was engaged in construction work at the residence of Oinam Joymangol. He was reportedly found dead near the under-construction building at around 8.30 pm. Police have arrested another Bihar native, identified as Md Manzhar, who was working with Manoj and is suspected to be involved in the incident. Police have launched an investigation, while the deceased’s body has been kept at the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences morgue for post-mortem examination.

Three Arrested With 142 Bottles of Codeine-Based Contraband

Imphal, August 12: A joint team of Heingang Police Station and Imphal East Commandos arrested three persons during an anti-narcotics operation at Mantripukhri Bazar on Tuesday. Acting on reliable intelligence, the security team intercepted the suspects and recovered 142 bottles of codeine-based contraband. Police identified the arrested persons as 28-year-old Mohammad Akilur Rahaman, 21-year-old Aribam Iftar and 44-year-old Md Iqubal Khan. The seized items reportedly included 116 bottles of Cody Late and 26 bottles of DelStal. A Hyundai i20 car was also seized during the operation. Police said the arrests were made as part of ongoing efforts to curb the illegal trade and distribution of narcotic substances.

Woman Arrested With 22.75 Kg Suspected Ganja

Imphal, August 12: Imphal East Commandos, along with women police personnel and in coordination with 28 Assam Rifles, arrested a 27-year-old woman in connection with an alleged drug-peddling case on Tuesday. The woman, identified as Oinam Ongbi Tenden Devi of Sekta Awang Leikai, Imphal East, was arrested during an operation based on information available to the security personnel. Police reportedly recovered 22.75 kilograms of suspected ganja and a mobile phone from her possession. The arrest forms part of continuing anti-narcotics operations being conducted across Manipur. The seized substance and other materials have been taken into custody as investigation into the alleged drug-peddling activities continues.

Stolen Creta Recovered in Churachandpur

Churachandpur, August 12: Churachandpur Police recovered and handed over a stolen black Hyundai Creta to a Delhi Police team following a request from Delhi Police. The vehicle was recovered at Kangvai in Churachandpur district and subsequently handed over to a personnel of Uttam Nagar Police Station under Dwarka District, Delhi. Police identified the vehicle through its chassis and engine numbers during the recovery and handover process. The operation highlights coordination between police authorities in Manipur and Delhi in tracing and recovering stolen vehicles. The recovered vehicle was formally handed over to the visiting Delhi Police personnel for further legal proceedings and investigation in connection with the theft case.

Churachandpur Records Highest Dengue Cases in Manipur

Churachandpur, August 12: Churachandpur district has reported the highest number of confirmed dengue cases in Manipur this year, with 105 positive cases detected among 442 people tested so far. District Malaria Officer Dr Liangoumuan Samte said the health department has intensified preventive measures in response to the increase. Thermal fogging operations are being carried out from house to house, covering areas within a 50-to-100-metre radius. The department is also conducting source-reduction drives and door-to-door awareness campaigns in coordination with civil society organisations, village chiefs, youth clubs, ASHA workers and church leaders. No dengue-related deaths have been reported in the district so far this year.

Infant’s Body Recovered From Athokpam Dam

Thoubal, August 12: Police recovered the body of a few-days-old infant from Athokpam Dam above the Arong River in Thoubal district on Wednesday morning. According to a notice issued by Thoubal Police, the infant’s body has been kept at the JNIMS Mortuary. Police have appealed to family members or anyone who can establish the identity of the infant to come forward and claim the body within 48 hours. Authorities have assured that the identity of any claimant will be kept strictly confidential. Police are seeking information that could help establish the identity of the infant and determine the circumstances under which the body was found at the dam.

Imphal, August 12: Manipur joined the observance of National Anti-Ragging Day as the nationwide Anti-Ragging Week was launched on Wednesday. The Anti-Ragging Committee of Dhanamanjuri University organised an awareness programme at the DM College of Arts Multipurpose Hall. DMU Professor W. Kakching, August 12: BJP Manipur Pradesh General Secretary P. Premananda has criticised what he described as attempts to misinterpret the State Government’s initiative to provide ₹10,000 financial assistance to women. Speaking at a one-day Mandal Sammelan organised by BJP Sugnu Mandal at Chairel in Kakching district, Premananda said the assistance was initiated following Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand’s appeal to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He said the ₹10,000 payment is the first instalment of assistance expected to total ₹50,000 in three instalments for financially constrained women affected by the prevailing crisis. Premananda alleged that some ineligible persons were attempting to misuse the scheme and portray the government negatively.

Cabinet Approves Government Medical College in Senapati

Imphal, August 11: The Manipur State Cabinet has taken several key decisions covering education, healthcare, sports, transport and development. Meeting at the CM Secretariat in Mantripukhri, the Cabinet gave in-principle approval for setting up a Government Medical College at Senapati with an annual intake of 100 MBBS students. The district hospital will be upgraded to meet the requirements of the medical college. The Cabinet also enhanced cash incentives for Manipur athletes participating in the 2026 Commonwealth Games, fixing Rs 20 lakh for gold, Rs 15 lakh for silver, Rs 10 lakh for bronze and Rs 4 lakh for participants.

Cabinet Approves Sports Development Foundation

Imphal, August 11: The State Cabinet has approved the formation of a Section 8 government company to mobilise and utilise Corporate Social Responsibility funds for sports development in Manipur. The proposed entity, to be named the Manipur Sports Development Foundation, will include government officials and non-official members from sports, finance, sports science and related fields. The Cabinet also approved the promotion of L. Shushila as Deputy Superintendent of Police (Sports) and the appointment of Olympian and Arjuna Awardee K. Chinglensana as Deputy Director (Sports Promotion). Other decisions included a reduction in delayed vehicle fitness renewal penalties and allotment of land for a Press Club office in Bishnupur.

Cabinet Approves 100 MW Power Procurement

Imphal, August 11: The State Cabinet has approved the procurement of 100 megawatts of electricity from the Farrakka Thermal Power Plant in West Bengal to strengthen power availability in Manipur. A proposal has also been submitted for procuring an additional 50 MW from renewable energy sources. MSPDCL Managing Director Mangsatabam Rabi said the state is taking steps to improve power supply and resilience. The Cabinet also decided to recommend September 2, 2026, as the date for the Governor to summon the Eighth Session of the Twelfth Manipur Legislative Assembly. The decisions were taken during the Cabinet meeting at the CM Secretariat in Mantripukhri.

Government Defends Alternative Site for NIT Manipur

Imphal, August 11: Manipur Government spokesperson Thokchom Radheshyam has rejected Congress allegations that Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand was unaware of land allotted for the permanent campus of NIT Manipur at Lamphel. Speaking to the media, Radheshyam said the previously allotted 300-acre site was found to be highly marshy and unsuitable for construction. He said extensive piling and specialised foundation work would have increased the project cost beyond the sanctioned amount, resulting in cancellation of funding. Radheshyam said the government remains committed to identifying and allotting a suitable alternative site for the permanent campus and accused Congress of spreading misinformation.

Counter Economic Blockade on Imphal-Ukhrul Road Lifted

Ukhrul, August 11: The Kuki community has lifted the counter economic blockade and total shutdown imposed along the Imphal-Ukhrul road following talks with a delegation of the Manipur Government. Home Minister Govindas Konthoujam led the delegation to Sangkai Kuki, where discussions were held with representatives of the Kuki CSO Working Committee and KSO Ukhrul. The government assured necessary steps to ensure safe and free movement along the road. An MoU was signed between the two sides, following which KSO Ukhrul announced the lifting of the agitation from 4:30 pm. Around 450 goods vehicles stranded near Litan Police Station and other locations subsequently resumed movement under security escort.

CM, Home Minister Meet Governor Amid Census Row

Imphal, August 11: Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand and Home Minister Govindas Konthoujam met Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla at Lok Bhavan amid growing opposition to the proposed Census exercise in Manipur. The meeting reportedly followed discussions held on Monday between the Home Minister and representatives of the Campaign for Just and Fair Delimitation and 14 civil society organisations. The meeting lasted for more than half an hour, although the exact agenda was not immediately known. JFD has been demanding that the Census be conducted only after updation of the National Register of Citizens and rehabilitation of internally displaced persons in their native places.

The demonstrations were organised under the initiative of the JFD Students Wing. Students of Maharaja Budhachandra College in Imphal East and Pitambara English School, Ratankumar Memorial School and Regular English High School in Kwakeithel participated in the protest along Tiddim Road. Raising slogans including “No NRC, No Census” and “No IDP Settlement, No Census,” the students said conducting the Census under the prevailing circumstances would go against public interests. They demanded rehabilitation of internally displaced persons before the exercise.

RPI-Athawale to Contest 2027 Manipur Polls

New Delhi, August 11: Republican Party of India (Athawale) National President and Union Minister of State Ramdas Athawale has said the party will contest the 2027 Manipur Assembly election. Speaking at the party’s National Executive meeting in New Delhi, Athawale identified NRC updation using 1951 as the base year and Scheduled Tribe status for Meitei/Meetei among the party’s key agendas in Manipur. He also opposed the proposed Census in the state, citing concerns over illegal immigration, and said the issues would be raised with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. RPI-Athawale leader Maheshwar Thounaojam said the party would work to safeguard the issues and aspirations raised by its national president.

Smart Meters Installed in 70,000 Imphal Connections

Imphal, August 11: MSPDCL Managing Director Mangsatabam Rabi has said around 70,000 of the targeted 1.54 lakh smart electric meters have been installed in the Imphal area. Speaking at a Meet the Press programme at the DIPR Auditorium, Rabi clarified that smart meters do not generate higher bills than the previous prepaid meters. He urged consumers with grievances to submit written complaints to MSPDCL. According to Rabi, smart meters can help monitor power consumption and detect electricity theft. He also highlighted the installation of solar panels in 2,900 households under PM Surya Ghar and the use of Rs 59 crore to convert 11-KV lines to Medium Voltage Covered Conductors.

Rally Held Against Indo-Myanmar Border Demarcation

Chandel, August 11: A mass rally was held in Khengjang and Molcham villages of Chandel district against the proposed Indo-Myanmar border demarcation in the Khengjoi sector. Organised under the aegis of affected border-area Kuki chiefs, the rally opposed the proposed realignment of boundary pillars in the area. Organisers claimed that the proposed alignment between Boundary Pillars 65 and 68 does not correspond with the existing ground position traditionally occupied by local residents. They said the affected areas include ancestral homes, agricultural land, burial grounds and customary community land. The Kuki chiefs demanded that the existing boundary position be maintained and said they would oppose any move to part with their land.

Arms and Military Stores Recovered in Kakching

Kakching, August 11: Security forces recovered a cache of arms, ammunition and military stores during a search operation in the Wabagai Turenmamei area under Hiyanglam Police Station in Kakching district. The recovery included one .303 rifle, one 9mm pistol, three single-barrel guns, three carbines, one 51mm mortar bomb, three tube-launching devices and two hand grenades. Eighteen live rounds of ammunition were also recovered. Security personnel additionally seized an INSAS bayonet and military stores, including bulletproof plates, bulletproof covers, communication sets and other miscellaneous items. The operation forms part of continuing security searches in vulnerable areas of the state.

Two Arrested With Suspected Heroin in Bishnupur

Bishnupur, August 11: Bishnupur District Police and central security forces, assisted by Churachandpur District Police, intercepted a Scorpio vehicle at Bishnupur while it was travelling from Churachandpur towards Imphal. According to the police, a search of the vehicle led to the recovery of nine soap cases containing 96 grams of suspected heroin. Two persons, identified as 29-year-old Md. Abdur Rahaman and 24-year-old Md. Saruk Khan, were arrested in connection with the recovery. Police also seized two mobile phones and the vehicle. The arrested individuals are being questioned as part of the investigation into the suspected transportation of the contraband.

CRPF DG Concludes Two-Day Manipur Visit

Imphal, August 11: CRPF Director General Gyanendra Pratap Singh concluded his two-day visit to Manipur and departed for New Delhi. During his visit, the CRPF chief inspected the Manipur-Nagaland Sector CRPF camp at Langjing and visited several other locations. He also reviewed the security and law-and-order situation in the state and held discussions with senior Manipur Government officials. The CRPF DG had arrived in Imphal two days earlier as part of the visit. His tour comes amid continuing security and law-and-order challenges in the state. Singh returned to New Delhi after completing the scheduled inspections and official interactions.

Impact News Issues Correction Over SoO Report

Woman’s Body Recovered From Wangjing River

Thoubal, August 11: The decomposed body of a woman was recovered from the Wangjing River at Lamding Laikol under Thoubal Police Station. The deceased was identified as 60-year-old Khundongbam Bidhumakhi of Heirok Part 2, Mayai Leikai. According to family members, she had been missing since July 22, and a missing-person report was filed at Heirok Police Station on July 24. Thoubal Police and forensic experts conducted a detailed inspection of the recovered body before taking it into custody. The circumstances surrounding her death are being examined. Police are expected to continue investigation to establish the sequence of events leading to her disappearance and death.

CorCom Announces Independence Day Boycott

Imphal, August 11: The umbrella body of several proscribed organisations, CorCom, has announced a boycott of India’s Independence Day celebrations on August 15. In a statement issued by its media coordinator M. Sakhen, CorCom announced a total shutdown from midnight of August 14 until 6:30 pm on August 15. The statement said essential and emergency services, including medical services, electricity, water supply, fire service, press activities and religious rituals, would remain exempt from the shutdown. The announcement comes ahead of Independence Day celebrations in Manipur. Authorities are expected to maintain security arrangements across the state during the period.

Imphal, August 11: BJP Manipur Pradesh has accused Congress and its alliance partners of remaining silent over alleged irregularities, including a reported paper leak, in the Jharkhand State Recruitment Examination. Committee Opposes Non-Muslim Members in Waqf Board

Imphal, August 11: The Joint Committee Against the Inclusion of Non-Muslim Members in the 8th Waqf Board Manipur has announced protests from August 12 in several Muslim-dominated areas. Speaking at the MMWO office in Hatta, committee chairman Mv. Atuar Rahman said the committee had held discussions with Ulama, civil society organisations and student bodies before submitting a deadline to the State Government seeking resolution of the issue. He alleged that no positive response had been received from the government or the Waqf Board Chairman. Antas Khan as Chairman of the 8th Manipur Waqf Board. Speaking to the media at Kwakta Bazaar, AKYVO Student Wing President Md. Anish Khan Aribam urged the government to appoint the remaining members of the Waqf Board. He also demanded representation from Kwakta, citing the sizeable Meitei-Pangal population in the area. The groups further urged that non-Muslims should not be appointed as members of the Waqf Board.

Parliament Passes Taxation and Other Laws Amendment Bill

New Delhi, August 11: Parliament has passed the Taxation and Other Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2026, after the Rajya Sabha returned the Money Bill to the Lok Sabha following discussion. Replying to the debate in the Rajya Sabha, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman clarified that the legislation does not impose any tax or transaction charge on UPI users. She said digital payments will continue to remain free for consumers and explained that the UPI-related provision is only an enabling provision and does not itself introduce a tax. Sitharaman also clarified that the government does not intend to impose Merchant Discount Rate charges on small merchants.

Colombia Earthquake Death Toll Rises to 132

Bogota, August 11: The death toll from a magnitude 7.4 earthquake that struck western Colombia has risen to 132, with more than 570 people injured. According to the US Geological Survey, the earthquake was centred near San Jose del Palmar in the Choco region, around 400 kilometres west of Bogota. Hundreds of buildings were damaged, while rescue teams continued searching for people reportedly trapped under debris. President Abelardo de la Espriella declared an emergency to speed up relief and recovery operations. More than 20 municipalities, including Pereira, Quibdo, Cali and Manizales, were reportedly affected. Authorities have warned of possible aftershocks.

The championship began on August 4 at Fashion Island Mall in Bangkok, Thailand. In the Quad matches, India defeated Sri Lanka 2-0, Vietnam 2-1, Pakistan 2-0 and Iran 2-0 to reach the semi-finals. India then lost to hosts Thailand 2-1 in the semi-final, with Thailand winning the deciding contest.
