CM Says BJP Pursuing NRC Implementation in Manipur

Imphal, September 14: Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand said the BJP has been pursuing the implementation of the National Register of Citizens, NRC, in Manipur for the past four years based on the aspirations of the people. He was speaking at the inauguration of a BJP media workshop at Thambal Shanglen in Imphal today. Khemchand said the party had taken a decision on NRC four years ago and subsequently raised the issue with the Centre. He highlighted various initiatives undertaken by the BJP for the welfare of Manipur and promoting peaceful coexistence among communities. The Chief Minister also stressed the need for better coordination within the party to effectively communicate government initiatives. He inaugurated the “Atal E-Pao Shang” media cell and “Atal Loushing-Pukei” library.

Amit Shah Says NRC Discussions Underway for Manipur

New Delhi, September 14: Union Home Minister Amit Shah said the Government of India is actively discussing the implementation of the National Register of Citizens, NRC, in Manipur with 1951 as the baseline. Shah was responding to the media during a press conference held in connection with the “Seva Sankalp Abhiyan” in Mumbai. He said discussions are also underway regarding the timeline for nationwide implementation of the NRC. According to Shah, the Centre is consulting stakeholders and political parties in Manipur on the issue and a decision will be communicated once the discussions are finalised. He assured that the concerns of Manipur are being heard and said the process is currently underway.

A. Sarda Confident of Progress on Manipur NRC Demand

Imphal, September 14: Rajya Sabha MP A. Sarda has expressed confidence that ongoing discussions between the Centre and political parties on the demand to update the NRC in Manipur with 1951 as the base year will yield a positive outcome. Speaking to the media at Thambal Shanglen today, Sarda said Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s recent statement that the Centre is holding discussions with political parties on the NRC issue should not be viewed as an ordinary remark. She said the statement indicates that discussions are actively taking place and expressed confidence that the demand for NRC updation would eventually be addressed. The issue has remained a major demand of several organisations and political groups in Manipur.

Five CSOs Warn of Intensified Agitation Over Manipur Issues

Imphal, September 14: Five civil society organisations, including AMUCO, AMAWOVA, PLMPAM, COHR and MSF, have warned of intensified agitation against what they described as attempts by the Government of India to undermine Manipur. The organisations held a protest meeting at Kwakeithel Thounaojam Leikai Community Hall today. Convenor Sorokhaibam Sanjoy said the groups would continue their movement until their demands are addressed. Their demands include updating the NRC with 1951 as the base year, opposing SIR 2026, rehabilitating internally displaced persons, taking immediate steps to address the prevailing crisis and withdrawing AFSPA from Manipur. The organisations also alleged illegal immigration into the state and said conducting the Census without addressing these concerns would be inappropriate.

Jiribam Groups Condemn Reported Statement on SIR Voter Deletion

Jiribam, September 14: Jiribam Meira Paibi groups and civil society organisations have condemned a social media statement reportedly made by Sahab Uddin, brother of Jiribam MLA Md Achab Uddin, alleging that Bengali Muslim voters were deleted from the electoral roll during the Special Intensive Revision, SIR. Speaking at a press conference at the All Jiribam Meira Paibi Office in Babupara today, Women’s Association for Socio-Economic and Development, Jiribam President N. Nevarani alleged that the reported statement had a communal tone and could create tension between Meitei and Muslim communities. She said any deletion of voters during the SIR would have to be carried out by concerned officials according to prescribed procedures. She also warned of legal action if Sahab Uddin fails to clarify the reported statement by tomorrow.

IPSA Marks 32nd Foundation Day, Raises Concern Over Infiltration

Imphal, September 14: International Peace and Social Advancement, IPSA Kangleipak, observed its 32nd Foundation Day at Manipur Press Club today. Speaking to the media, IPSA President Maibam Bisheshwor called for concrete measures to identify and check the infiltration of outsiders. He warned that Manipuris could eventually become outsiders in their own land if the issue is not addressed. Director of Environment and Climate Change Dr. T. Brajakumar, retired IAS officer Harekrishna, Dean of DMU School of Social Sciences Professor K. Indramani and 14 CSOs Kangleipak Chairman Yumnamcha Dilipkumar attended the programme. The organisation reiterated its concerns over demographic changes and called for steps to safeguard the interests of the indigenous population.

CM Urges Contractual Employees to Avoid Bribery for Regularisation

Imphal, September 14: Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand has called for an immediate end to the practice of allegedly seeking regularisation of contractual employees through bribery. Addressing a programme at JNIMS, Porompat today, Khemchand said genuine service, dedication and contribution should form the basis for legitimate claims. He expressed concern over reports of alleged bribery involving the regularisation of nurses, which had also appeared in the media and resulted in an FIR. The Chief Minister noted that more than 200 nurses were appointed on a contractual basis during the COVID-19 pandemic. He assured that genuine claims would be considered through due process and urged contractual employees to approach the government through transparent channels. He also inaugurated and launched several healthcare projects at JNIMS.

Mazo Hub Staff Protest Bomb Blast at Chingmeirong Outlet

Imphal, September 14: Staff of Mazo Hub’s Chingmeirong branch staged a protest in front of the outlet today, condemning a bomb blast that reportedly occurred at the branch last evening. According to the report, the explosion took place around 6 PM and caused damage to the outlet. No responsibility has so far been established for the incident. Speaking during the protest, Branch Manager L. Athouba said the outlet provides electronic goods to customers at affordable prices and that such incidents could threaten the safety of employees. He highlighted the dependence of young workers on their monthly salaries to support their families and appealed against further violence and intimidation. Staff from other Mazo Hub branches also joined the protest and called for dialogue and a peaceful resolution.

Four Regional Parties Unite Under ‘Manipur First’ Platform

Imphal, September 14: Four regional political parties have decided to work together under the motto “Manipur First” ahead of the upcoming elections. The decision was announced at a press conference at Manipur Press Club today. The parties are the Manipur Democratic Peoples Front, Peoples Political Party, Peoples Democratic Alliance and Good Governance Party. Chairman of the Manipur Regional Political Parties Coordinating Committee and senior advocate Khaidem Mani said the committee was formed to bring regional parties together to address issues confronting the people under the banner of Manipur Meeyamgi Eehou. The parties said they would coordinate their efforts through a Common Minimum Programme focusing on Manipur’s unity and integrity, employment, good governance, economic revival, social justice and new leadership.

Skill Development Training on Pineapple Leaf Fibre Begins in Thoubal

Thoubal, September 14: A 10-day skill development training programme on “Development of Handicraft Products/Items from Pineapple Leaf Fibre” began today at the Training Hall of Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Thoubal. The programme is being organised by KVK Thoubal under the sponsorship of ICAR-NINFET, Kolkata, with 20 trainees from Thoubal and Kakching districts participating. Inaugurating the programme, KVK Thoubal Head Dr. Kh. Premlata said the training aims to help weavers develop handicraft products using pineapple leaf fibre while enhancing their skills and livelihood opportunities. KVK Thoubal Subject Matter Specialist R.K. Lembisana also welcomed the initiative, highlighting the importance of providing such skill-development opportunities to weavers.

Medicinal Plant Plantation Drive Held in Wangjing

Thoubal, September 14: A plantation drive involving medicinal plants was conducted along Wangjing Hodamba Road today in connection with the birth month of Lamyanba Hijam Irabot. The drive was led by Maibam Ningol Mema, a lifelong medicinal plant conservationist from Wangjing Hodamba. Speaking on the occasion, around 70-year-old Mema said she has been distributing saplings of native medicinal plants to members of the public free of cost to promote their conservation. She appealed to individuals, local clubs, groups and civil society organisations interested in medicinal plant conservation to come forward and collect saplings free of cost. The initiative aims to encourage wider cultivation and preservation of native medicinal plants.

NIT Manipur Holds Suicide Prevention Awareness Programme

Imphal, September 14: NIT Manipur organised an Awareness-cum-Sensitisation Programme on Suicide Prevention at its Seminar Hall today as part of the observance of World Suicide Prevention Day 2026. Clinical Psychologist Dr. Karishma Yumnam of the State Tele-MANAS Cell, Manipur, was felicitated and delivered a talk on mental health and suicide prevention. She stressed the importance of early identification of emotional distress, empathy and timely professional support. Around 60 faculty members, staff, PhD scholars and students participated in the interactive programme. The event concluded with a reaffirmation of NIT Manipur’s commitment to promoting mental well-being and creating a supportive campus environment. The programme focused on strengthening awareness and encouraging people to seek appropriate help during periods of emotional distress.

Manipuli in Kolkata Holds Candlelight Vigil for Chongtham Vikram

Kolkata, September 14: Manipuri in Kolkata, MIK, organised a candlelight vigil in memory of musician Chongtham Vikram at the AAI Community Centre in Kolkata yesterday. Around 80 members of the Manipuri community participated in the programme, expressing grief and solidarity with Vikram’s bereaved family and demanding justice. Participants offered flowers and held a candlelight prayer, followed by a one-minute silence in remembrance of the departed musician. MIK conveyed condolences to Vikram’s family and reiterated its call for justice. The vigil was part of continuing expressions of concern and solidarity following the death of the Manipuri musician in Delhi. Community members used the gathering to honour his memory and seek accountability.

Five Manipur Players and Coach Selected for Asian Games Sepak Takraw

New Delhi, September 14: Five players and one coach from Manipur will represent India in men’s Sepak Takraw at the 20th Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, scheduled from September 19 to October 4. The Indian men’s squad comprises 12 players, with Pangambam Durjit of Heingang Makha Leikai joining the team as coach. The five Manipur players are Akash Yumnam, Sorokhaibam Malemnganba, Wahengbam Henary, Elangbam Lokhon and Mayengbam Ashok. They will compete for India in the Men’s Team Regu, Men’s Regu and Men’s Quadrant events. Their selection adds a significant representation from Manipur to India’s Sepak Takraw contingent at the upcoming Asian Games.

Manipur Enter Semi-Final of Junior Girls’ National Football Championship

Anantapur, September 14: Manipur have entered the semi-final of the Dr. Talimeran Ao Junior Girls National Football Championship after defeating Kerala 1-0 in their final league match today. Shagolsem Ronika scored the decisive goal in the 62nd minute. Manipur finished the league stage with seven points from three matches, recording two wins and a draw. Earlier, the team defeated Chhattisgarh 5-0 and played out a goalless draw against Uttar Pradesh. The Manipur squad comprises 20 players, including two goalkeepers, seven defenders, eight midfielders and three forwards. Manager S. Asha, Head Coach Th. Khunjangambi and Assistant Coach L. Surjit are guiding the team. Manipur will play their semi-final on September 17.
