UNC Maintains Economic Blockade After Talks With Government

Senapati, August 10: The first round of talks between the Manipur Government and the United Naga Council (UNC) ended without a conclusive outcome, with the UNC reaffirming its decision to continue the economic blockade along NH-2 in Naga areas. Deputy Chief Minister Losii Dikho, Home Minister Govindas Konthoujam and BJP and allied MLAs met UNC representatives at SM Sha Complex in Senapati. Government spokesperson MLA Th. Radheshyam said the discussions did not yield a positive outcome but would continue. UNC President Ng. Lorho said the blockade would remain until its demands, including justice for six Naga civilians killed, are addressed.

Four Houses Burnt in Senapati

Senapati, August 10: Four houses at Kailenjang Khul in Senapati district were gutted in a fire amid the visit of Deputy Chief Minister Losii Dikho, Home Minister Govindas Konthoujam and other MLAs to meet United Naga Council leaders. The houses were reportedly set on fire by unknown miscreants at around 1 pm. The affected houses were vacant, with residents having reportedly left following the outbreak of violence between Naga and Kuki communities earlier this year. The exact cause of the fire remains unknown. Senapati Police have registered a case and additional security forces have been deployed. An investigation is underway, while allegations have emerged from both communities.

Students Protest Against Census Without NRC Updation

Imphal, August 10: Students from several schools staged protests across Manipur following the Campaign for Just and Fair Delimitation’s call to boycott the Census until the National Register of Citizens is updated. Students of Tamphasana Higher Secondary School formed a human chain outside the school under the JFD Students Wing, carrying placards and demanding NRC updation before the Census and resettlement of internally displaced persons. Security forces were deployed at the school gate. Despite attempts to stop the protest, students continued their demonstration. The JFD Students Wing said the movement would continue against the Census and house-listing scheduled to begin on August 17.

Johnstone Students and Teachers Back Census Boycott

Imphal, August 10: Students and teachers of Johnstone Higher Secondary School on BT Road joined the campaign against conducting the Census before updation of the National Register of Citizens. The participants formed a human chain and raised slogans including “No NRC, No Census” in support of the Campaign for Just and Fair Delimitation’s boycott call. The protest is part of a series of demonstrations being held at educational institutions and other locations across Manipur. The JFD has maintained that NRC updation should precede the Census, citing concerns over demographic changes and the need to address the resettlement of internally displaced persons.

IPFM Leader Urges People to Join Census Boycott

Imphal, August 10: Indigenous People’s Forum, Manipur Women’s Wing Executive Member Anandi Shimrah has appealed to people to join the ongoing Census boycott movement. Speaking at a public meeting organised at Wal United Youths Club Ground, Wangkhei Angom Leikai, Shimrah said indigenous Meitei and Naga communities could face further difficulties if the Census is conducted without first updating the National Register of Citizens. The meeting was held amid intensified protests by groups supporting the Campaign for Just and Fair Delimitation. Participants reiterated demands for NRC updation before the Census and the resettlement of internally displaced persons. Human-chain demonstrations were also held at various locations.

Government Holds Talks With JFD and 14 Civil Society Groups

Imphal, August 10: The Manipur Government held discussions with the Campaign for Just and Fair Delimitation and 14 Civil Society Organisations following their call to boycott the Census until NRC updation. The talks were initiated after Home Department Joint Secretary Mayengbam Veto invited the groups for discussions. JFD representatives led by Convenor Jitendra Ningomba and Finance Secretary Sunil Karam, along with representatives of the 14 CSOs, met Home Minister Govindas Konthoujam at his official residence before holding a subsequent meeting with Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand at the CM Secretariat. Details of the discussions were not immediately available.

Shiv Sena Manipur Seeks NRC Before Census

Imphal, August 10: Shiv Sena Manipur Pradesh has announced plans to meet central leaders in New Delhi and submit a memorandum demanding updation of the National Register of Citizens before the Census is conducted in Manipur. Party president M. Tombi said the party would urge the Centre to verify residents of what he described as 934 unrecognised villages that emerged between 2011 and 2023. He also called for appropriate action against illegal immigrants and a clear policy on NRC. Speaking at the inauguration of the party’s Youth Wing office at Babupara, Tombi welcomed recent government efforts to improve highway connectivity and hold stakeholder talks.

Khemchand Flags Off Har Ghar Tiranga Bike Rally

Imphal, August 10: Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand has urged citizens to contribute towards Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of making India a globally prosperous and developed nation by 2047. He was speaking at the flag-off ceremony of the Har Ghar Tiranga Campaign Bike Rally organised by Manipur Police at Hapta Kangjeibung. More than 500 bikers participated in the rally, which travelled towards Leikun in Chandel through National Highway-102. Khemchand said the Tiranga Yatra commemorates India’s Independence and promotes the vision of Viksit Bharat@2047. He also expressed hope that the initiative would contribute to peace in Manipur.

RPI-Athawale Leader Questions BJP’s Har Ghar Tiranga Campaign

Imphal, August 10: Republican Party of India (Athawale) National Secretary Maheshwar Thounaojam has criticised BJP MLAs for allegedly turning the Har Ghar Tiranga Campaign into a celebration while, he claimed, the Centre continues to neglect Manipur’s issues. Speaking on the matter, Maheshwar questioned the effectiveness of the BJP’s “double-engine” governments and said several public concerns remain unresolved. He reiterated demands for updation of the National Register of Citizens and inclusion of Meitei/Meetei in the Scheduled Tribe list. Maheshwar also expressed doubts over the government’s ability to fulfil these demands, calling for greater attention to issues affecting Manipur.

Assam Rifles Conducts Patriotism Awareness Programmes

Imphal, August 10: Assam Rifles organised community awareness programmes at several locations across Manipur to promote patriotism and raise awareness among students. The programmes were held under the aegis of the Ministry of Culture in connection with the 150th anniversary of the national song “Vande Mataram.” As part of the initiative, Assam Rifles also conducted Har Ghar Tiranga Campaign activities at Sangaithel Vocational School in Imphal West, Bethel English School in Nambol, Wainam Village in Bishnupur and Waroiching Village in Kangpokpi district. The programmes focused on encouraging patriotic participation and creating awareness among young people.

AITUC Protests for Farmers’ and Workers’ Rights

Imphal, August 10: The All India Trade Union Congress Manipur, jointly with Manipur Loumi Lup, staged a protest at Irabot Bhawan in Imphal in support of the nationwide agitation by farmers and workers. Protesters demanded a legal guarantee for Minimum Support Price, repeal of the four labour codes and higher minimum wages and adequate wages for scheme workers. They also called for peace and normalcy in Manipur, NRC updation and the establishment of a Highway Protection Force. AITUC Manipur General Secretary Laishram Sotinkumar accused the NDA Government of undermining the rights of workers and farmers and said the agitation would continue until their demands are addressed.

Essential Goods Trucks Stranded in Jiribam for 28 Days

Jiribam, August 10: Trucks loaded with essential commodities bound for Imphal from Jiribam have remained stranded at different locations in Jiribam for 28 days, causing difficulties for drivers and disrupting the movement of goods. Speaking to Impact News, drivers said the prolonged halt has resulted in the deterioration and damage of several perishable commodities. They also highlighted the hardships faced during the extended period of waiting. The drivers have appealed to the government to take immediate measures to clear the stranded trucks and ensure smooth transportation of essential commodities towards Imphal. They said timely intervention is necessary to prevent further losses.

Manipur University Concludes Indigenous Peoples’ Day Programme

Imphal, August 10: The Department of Law, Manipur University, concluded a two-day programme commemorating World Indigenous Peoples’ Day. Manipur University Vice-Chancellor-in-Charge Professor R.K. Hemakumar, Registrar Professor M. Premjit and other dignitaries attended the concluding function. During the programme, Head of the Department of Law Dr Y. Premananda released his book titled “Environment and Legal Order: Sustainable Development Law — Special Reference to North East India.” Speaking at the event, Professor Hemakumar highlighted challenges faced by indigenous communities due to external forces. The programme focused on issues concerning indigenous peoples and the importance of safeguarding their interests and identity.

Wabagai MLA Promises No Unmetalled Roads Before 2027

Kakching, August 10: Wabagai MLA Dr Usham Deben has announced that no kutcha or unmetalled roads will remain in the constituency ahead of the 2027 General Assembly election. He made the announcement during the inauguration of a newly constructed bridge over Kharungpat Khong Maril at Hangoon Nganupat. Addressing the gathering, Deben said development works in Wabagai have progressed significantly in areas including roads, drinking water and education despite the challenges faced by the state. He assured that remaining roads would be improved and said further development works in health, education and drinking water would continue in the constituency.

Thoubal, August 10: A youth political conference was organised at the Multipurpose Hall, Khangabok Part-II, under the theme “The Role of Youth in Shaping the Future of Society.” The programme was organised by Team Dr Romenkumar Singh and discussed several resolutions concerning the role of young people in shaping the future of Khangabok Constituency. Nongshum Women Protest Arrest of UNLF-MPA Cadre

Imphal, Monday, August 10: The Nongshum Meira Paibi Lup organised a protest meeting condemning the arrest of a cadre of the Pambei-led UNLF-MPA. The protest followed reports that three individuals had been summoned by Jiribam Police for talks, after which one of them was arrested. Protesters demanded the unconditional release of the arrested cadre at the earliest. IMD Forecasts Rain and Thundershowers Across Manipur

Imphal, August 10: The India Meteorological Department, Meteorological Centre Imphal, has forecast rain and thundershowers at several places across Manipur on Monday and over the next two days. Rain is likely in parts of Tamenglong, Senapati, Kangpokpi, Ukhrul, Jiribam, Noney, Chandel, Churachandpur and Pherzawl districts. Isolated rainfall is expected in Imphal West, Imphal East, Kamjong, Bishnupur, Thoubal, Kakching and Tengnoupal. Similar weather conditions are forecast for August 11 and 12. The ICAR Agrometeorological Unit at Lamphelpat reported a maximum temperature of 31.5 degrees Celsius and a minimum of 23 degrees Celsius, with 0.3 mm rainfall recorded in the past 24 hours.

SDA Sora Marks First Foundation Day

Kakching, August 10: The Sports Development Authority (SDA), Sora, observed its first Foundation Day at the Library and Information Centre, Sora Bazar, in Kakching district. The programme highlighted the organisation’s establishment and the activities and initiatives undertaken since its formation. SDA Sora General Secretary Md. Zakir Hussain spoke about the reasons behind establishing the Sports Development Authority and outlined its work in promoting sports and supporting sporting activities. The foundation day marked the completion of the organisation’s first year and provided an opportunity to review its initiatives and future direction. State-Level Bodybuilding Championship Announced

Bishnupur, August 10: The Bishnupur District Body Builders and Fitness Association, under the aegis of the Manipur Amateur Body Builders Association, will organise the 3rd Mr. Ibudhou Tanglei Athoiba State-Level Bodybuilding Championship 2026 on September 13. The championship will be held at Oinam Ushak Khangdabi Community Hall in Bishnupur district. Association Advisor Dr Thingbaijam Swarankumar has appealed to bodybuilding enthusiasts and athletes from across Manipur to participate. A new Open District-Level Women’s Bodybuilding Contest will also be introduced to encourage greater participation by women athletes. Interested participants have been asked to complete registration by September 10.

Imphal, August 10: Manipur weightlifter Sorokhaibam Bindyarani, who won bronze in the women’s 58-kilogram weightlifting event at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, received a warm welcome at Imphal International Airport. Youth Affairs and Sports Secretary Naorem Praveen, National Sports Academy Manipur officials, members of the All Manipur Weightlifting Association, family members, athletes and local organisations joined the felicitation. Imphal, August 10: Manipur weightlifter Chanambam Rishikanta received a warm welcome at Imphal International Airport after winning silver in the men’s 60-kilogram weightlifting event at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. Konthoujam MLA Dr Sapam Ranjan, Youth Affairs and Sports Secretary Naorem Praveen, officials of the All Manipur Weightlifting Association, family members, athletes and members of the public attended the felicitation programme. Dr Sapam Ranjan praised Rishikanta’s performance and said his achievement has brought pride to Manipur and India. He expressed hope that the weightlifter would continue to excel at national and international competitions.

Mirabai Chanu and Jadumani Confirmed for Asian Games

Imphal, August 10: Manipur weightlifting star Saikhom Mirabai Chanu and boxer Mandengbam Jadumani have been confirmed to represent India at the 20th Asian Games 2026 in Japan. The Games are scheduled from September 19 to October 4. Youth Affairs and Sports Department Secretary Naorem Praveen confirmed their participation during a felicitation programme for Commonwealth Games medallists Chanambam Rishikanta and Sorokhaibam Bindyarani at Imphal International Airport. Praveen said confirmation regarding the participation of other Manipur athletes in the Asian Games is still awaited. The inclusion of Chanu and Jadumani adds to Manipur’s representation at the continental sporting event.

Ariha Pangambam Receives Hero’s Welcome in Imphal

Imphal, August 10: Historic Asian Aerobic Gymnastics Championship gold medallist Ariha Pangambam, seventh-place finisher Anjori Pangambam and coach Yumnam Ranjan received a warm welcome at Bir Tikendrajit International Airport in Imphal. Ariha became the first Indian athlete to win gold in aerobic gymnastics at the 10th Asian Aerobic Gymnastics Championship held in Tagaytay City, Philippines, from August 4 to 7. Coach Yumnam Ranjan highlighted inadequate training facilities at the Khuman Lampak Indoor Stadium and urged the government to improve infrastructure. Ariha’s victory followed fourth-place finishes at the 2024 and 2025 Asian championships and came after years of rigorous training.
