Four Naga Civilians Killed in Kangpokpi Ambush

Kangpokpi, August 27: Four Naga civilians were killed and another injured in an ambush allegedly carried out by Kuki armed groups along the IT Road in the Makui Ashang and Thanamba Naga areas this morning. The deceased were identified as Tadsongbou Ringkangmai, Mariakdibou Wijunamai, Anil Wijunamai and Wisobou Charenamai, while Gaikamang Ringkangmai sustained injuries. Reports said six people travelling towards Makui village were attacked around 8:30 am. An exchange of fire reportedly followed after Naga volunteers reached the area. The injured person was evacuated for treatment. The Naga People’s Organisation condemned the incident and called for a shutdown in Senapati district headquarters.

UNC Calls for Shutdown Over Killing of Naga Civilians

Kangpokpi, August 27: The United Naga Council has strongly condemned the killing of four Liangmai Naga civilians in an alleged ambush between Makui Ashang and Makui Thanamba villages along the IT Road. In a statement issued today, the UNC described the incident as a barbaric attack on innocent civilians and expressed strong resentment over what it termed a security failure. The council also alleged discriminatory deployment of security forces and accused Kuki militants under the Suspension of Operations agreement of being responsible. The UNC has called for a one-day shutdown across Naga areas and district headquarters from 6 am to 6 pm on August 28.

61st Hunger Marchers’ Day Observed in Imphal

Imphal, August 27: The All Manipur Students’ Union observed the 61st Hunger Marchers’ Day at Pishum Chingmacha today, commemorating the historic student movement of August 27, 1965, against an artificial scarcity of rice. Floral tributes were paid to student leaders Laishram Chaobal, Oinam Nabakumar and Nongmeikapam Pramodini, as well as All India Radio staff driver Waikhom Nilamani, who lost their lives during the agitation. Students later took out a rally carrying portraits of the martyrs and raised slogans including “Long Live Manipur,” “Manipur’s Integrity Cannot Be Compromised” and “No NRC, No Census.” Students from government and private schools participated.

AMSU Observes Hunger Marchers’ Day With NRC Demand

Imphal, August 27: The All Manipur Students’ Union observed the 61st Hunger Marchers’ Day under the theme “AMSU for Self-Reliant Manipur” at Bheigyachandra Open Air Theatre, Palace Compound. The programme began with a symbolic hunger march from Pishum Chingamacha to the main venue, where participants observed two minutes of silence in memory of the martyrs of the 1965 student movement. Speaking on the occasion, former AMSU President Y. Priyokumar said the people of Manipur are demanding NRC updation with 1951 as the base year and would not accept the Census without it. AMSU Observes Hunger Marchers’ Day in Jiribam

Jiribam, August 27: The 61st Hunger Marchers’ Day was observed in Jiribam today by the AMSU District Committee, Jiribam, at the Auditorium of Jiribam Municipal Council. Former Adhyaksha Kh. Janaki, JMC Executive Officer Moirangthem Surjit and JDO President E. Dewan attended the programme as presidium members. As part of the observance, students took out a rally through Jiribam town and paid floral tributes to those who lost their lives during the historic hunger march of 1965. A discussion was also held on the role and responsibilities of students in a welfare state. The programme recalled the significance of the student movement and its sacrifices.

Blood Donation Camp Held in Bamonkampu

Imphal, August 27: Ching Tam Social Workers’ Union, Bamonkampu, organised a voluntary blood donation camp at the Blood Bank of JNIMS Hospital today in connection with the observance of Chaklam Khongchat. A total of 20 people donated blood during the camp, which was organised by the union for the fourth time. The organisers expressed appreciation to the JNIMS medical team and Blood Bank staff for their support in conducting the programme. The union also appealed to more young people to come forward and donate blood regularly for the welfare of the public. The initiative aimed to support patients requiring blood and promote voluntary donation among the community.

Sit-In Held at Heirangoithong High School

Imphal, August 27: People staged a sit-in protest at Heirangoithong High School under Singjamei Police Station today against alleged excessive monetary demands. The protest was organised at the school, with students and teachers also participating. School Management Committee member L. Landhoni urged those concerned to withdraw what the protesters described as illegal monetary demands imposed on teachers. She highlighted the important role of teachers in shaping students into responsible citizens and said their professional responsibilities should not be undermined by such financial pressures. The protest sought attention from the concerned authorities and called for appropriate action to address the grievances raised by the school community.

Missing Woman Found Safe After Two Days

Imphal, August 27: Twenty-six-year-old Ngangbam Nanao of Sangaithel Awang Leikai, who went missing after visiting the Sangaithel Olympic Park area on August 25, was found safe early this morning. She was traced by a CRPF team between Thangjing Chiru Village and Khoken Kuki Village in adjoining areas of Imphal West and Kangpokpi districts. Nanao was handed over to locals at Sangaithel before being taken to RIMS Hospital for medical examination. She had reportedly gone missing around 9 am on August 25. A joint team of Manipur Police and Central forces, along with Lamshang MLA S. Rajen, had been conducting search operations since her disappearance.

UCO Keishampat Urges MLAs to Discuss NRC in Assembly

Imphal, August 27: United Clubs Organisation Keishampat has urged state MLAs to hold a detailed discussion on NRC updation during the upcoming eighth Assembly session instead of travelling to Delhi, and to formulate a white paper for submission to the Centre. UCO, comprising 10 clubs and 10 Meira Paibi organisations, held a press meet at Keishampat Leimajam Leikai Community Hall today. Convenor Chongtham Iboyaima said the organisation supports the JFD-led movement and urged government employees not to participate in Census-related training. He questioned how an accurate Census could be conducted while displaced people remain unable to return to their native places and demanded NRC updation first.

Churachandpur IDPs Stage Massive Sit-In

Churachandpur, August 27: Internally Displaced Persons in Churachandpur staged a massive sit-in at the Wall of Remembrance, Peace Ground, Tuibong today, demanding implementation of the Manipur High Court’s direction for equitable relief. The Joint IDPs of Churachandpur submitted a memorandum to Union Home Minister Amit Shah through Deputy Commissioner Krishna Kumar, seeking equal and non-discriminatory relief and rehabilitation assistance. The protesters also observed a one-minute silent prayer for IDPs who died during the violence. The organisation said the High Court had directed equal assistance for displaced people across Manipur. According to the group, 35,896 registered IDPs are in Churachandpur, including 15,409 in 81 relief camps.

Wetland Protection Reviewed at State Authority Meeting

Imphal, August 27: Deputy Chief Minister Losii Dikho chaired the sixth meeting of the Manipur State Wetlands Authority today at the Conference Hall of the Deputy Chief Minister in the Civil Secretariat, Mantripukhri. The meeting reviewed matters concerning the protection, conservation and management of wetlands across the state. Various measures aimed at strengthening wetland protection were also discussed. Director of the Department of Environment and Climate Change Dr. T. Brajakumar and MSWA Member Secretary presented five agenda items before the Deputy Chief Minister. The meeting focused on reviewing existing concerns and identifying measures required to ensure better conservation and management of Manipur’s wetland resources.

Man Arrested With Brown Sugar in Kangpokpi

Kangpokpi, August 27: Security forces arrested a 32-year-old man with more than two kilograms of suspected brown sugar at Motbung Cemetery in Kangpokpi district yesterday. A combined team of MN Sector QAT, Range Imphal QAT, CRPF, YADAM, ANTF Imphal East and Imphal East District Police acted on specific intelligence regarding drug trafficking in the Motbung area. The team intercepted a Bajaj diesel auto-rickshaw near the cemetery and recovered a packaged bag containing suspected brown sugar. The arrested person was identified as Paocha Kipgen of Phoibih Village, Motbung Phoibi. The accused, suspected contraband and vehicle were handed over to Saparmeina Police Station for further legal action.

Liquor Worth Over Rs 4.39 Lakh Seized in Jiribam

Jiribam, August 27: A team of FCP Jiribam seized a large quantity of Indian Made Foreign Liquor and beer estimated to be worth around Rs 4.39 lakh during frisking and checking at the FCP gate today. The operation was conducted at around 10:30 pm when two auto-rickshaws and an Alto K10 travelling from Jirighat towards Jiribam Bazar were stopped for checking. Several bottles of liquor were recovered during the search, and five people were arrested in connection with the seizure. Jiribam Police Station has registered a case and further investigation is underway to determine the source and intended destination of the seized liquor.

Brown Sugar Seized at T. Khullen Check Post

Senapati, August 27: Security forces arrested a 23-year-old man with 360 grams of suspected brown sugar during frisking and checking at T. Khullen Naka Check Post in Senapati district yesterday. A combined team of SOT Senapati Police, D-78 CRPF, QAT B-109 and 16 Assam Rifles conducted the checking operation. The arrested person was identified as Muhammad Safiqur Rahaman of Lilong Haoreibi Turul Ahanbi in Thoubal district. Security personnel recovered 27 soap cases containing suspected brown sugar and seized an Omni vehicle bearing registration number WB-64T-7355. The recovery forms part of ongoing security operations aimed at curbing the trafficking of illegal drugs in the state.

Endangered Pangolin, Hawk Chicks Rescued

Tengnoupal, August 27: A highly endangered pangolin and two Red-Tailed Hawk chicks have been rescued from separate locations in Tengnoupal and Chandel districts. The pangolin was rescued from Maringphai Village in Tengnoupal district yesterday afternoon, while the two hawk chicks were rescued from Modi Village in Chandel district. Following the rescue, the animals and birds were handed over to Wildlife Conservation Committee Secretary Ksh. Johnson for necessary care and protection. The rescue highlights ongoing efforts to protect endangered and vulnerable wildlife in the state. Authorities and conservation groups continue to appeal to the public to report wildlife sightings and avoid harming or illegally keeping protected species.

Two Manipuris to Represent India at Fitness Supermodel World 2026

Imphal, August 27: Manipur’s Millan Thingom and Vinni Mangsatabam will represent India at the fourth Mister and Miss Fitness Supermodel World 2026 in Dalat City, Vietnam, from September 10 to 19. Millan Thingom, son of Thingom John and Chitra of Porompat, and Vinni Mangsatabam, daughter of Annie Mangsatabam of Thangmeiband, will compete alongside participants from more than 40 countries. Team India will be led by National Director Rakesh Nongmaithem. Their participation will give the two representatives an opportunity to showcase their fitness and modelling credentials on an international platform while representing India at the global event.

Khelo India Yuva Samvad Held at Imphal College

Imphal, August 27: NSS Unit Imphal College and MY Bharat Imphal West jointly organised the “Khelo India Yuva Samvad 2026 – Khel Ki Baat PM Modi Ke Saath” programme at the Imphal College campus today. Imphal College Principal Dr. M. Chandra, coach Mutum Ibomcha, national cyclist Ch. Mangal Mission and others attended the programme. Langthabal MLA Karam Shyam, MU Vice-Chancellor Prof. RK Hemakumar, SAI Takyel Regional Director-in-Charge Dhandapani C, YAS officials and sportspersons attended. Jiribam School Wins Under-17 Girls’ Hockey Title

Imphal, August 27: Hill Cross English School, Jiribam emerged champion in the Under-17 Girls’ category of the State-Level Jawaharlal Nehru Hockey Tournament today. In the final played at the Khuman Lampak Sports Complex Hockey Stadium, Hill Cross English School defeated Kakching Higher Secondary School 2-1. In the Under-15 Boys’ final, Keisham Birjit Singh High School, Imphal West defeated Lamjao High School, Kakching 12-0, while Jiribam Higher Secondary School defeated Khurai Popular High School, Imphal East 2-1 in the Under-17 Boys’ final. Winners received Rs 20,000 and trophies, while runners-up teams received Rs 10,000 and trophies.

Khelo India Dialogue Held in Thoubal

Thoubal, August 27: A Khelo India Dialogue programme was held at Thoubal College today as part of the National Sports Day 2026 observance. The programme was jointly organised by the college’s NSS Units, NCC, Internal Quality Assurance Cell and MY Bharat Thoubal. Under the theme “Khelo India Dialogue – Khel Ki Baat, PM Modi Ke Saath,” teachers, students and sportspersons participated in the event, where a video interaction between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and youths and athletes was screened. An interaction with sports coaches was also conducted. The nationwide programme was held at around 1,600 institutions with participation from nearly eight lakh youths.
