Sit-in was held today protesting the burning down of Manipur University Recreation Hall
Imphal, 07 October 2016 ( Evening News ) : Sit-in was held today protesting the burning down of Manipur University recreation hall and vandalising of two rooms at the university. The sit-in was staged by Manipur University Teachers Association, Manipur University Staff Association and Manipur University Officers Association in front of the main gate of the university. Various placards were displayed at the sit-in like ‘Make Manipur University a Violence Free Zone’, ‘We Condemn Violence’, ‘Honour the Sanctity of University’ among others. Manipur University Teachers Association President Prof. S. Jibon-kumar strongly condemned the incident and termed the arson at the Manipur University as unfortunate. He said it will be better to solve various issues through dialogue rather than using violence.
In a major political development, Heingang A/C MLA Nongthombam Biren quits Primary membership of Congress party; also resigns as MLA
Imphal, 06 October 2016 ( Evening News ) : In a major political development, Nongthombam Biren today resigned from Primary Membership of congress party. Earlier in the morning Nongthombam Biren addressing media persons said he has resigned as MLA of Hengang Constituency MLA. N Biren was also the Spokesperson of Manipur Pradesh Congress Party. After his announcement to the media about his resignation as MLA, supporters of Biren stormed his residence demanding him to quit the Congress party as well. It is learn that following the demand of his supporters he quit from the Primary Membership of congress party. The former Minister Nongthombam Biren informed media persons that as of now he has no plan to join any political political party.
11-day training program for election officers began at ICM in view of the upcoming 2017 general election
Imphal, 03 October 2016 ( Evening News ) : 11-day 'Training of Trainers And Facilitators' and 'Training on Leadership & Motivation' for the election officers began today at the Institute of Co-operative Management Conference Hall, Lamphelpat. The training program is held in view of the upcoming 2017 general election. The program is jointly organised by Chief Electoral Officer Manipur and India International Institute of Democracy and Election Management, IIIDEM under the supervision of Election Commission of India. Manipur Chief Electoral Officer, resource persons from IIIDEM and others attended the program. Around 100 trainees participated in the training program. The training will conclude on Oct 14.
Human Rights activist Irom Sharmila now wants to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi
Imphal, 02 October 2016 ( Evening News ) : After Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, human rights activist Irom Sharmila now wants to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi expecting "good advice" from him. She had met Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on September 26 seeking his advice on how to defeat "major political parties" in Manipur. She said "Good advice should always be expected. Whether a person is an enemy or a friend, if he has some good views and wants to share it with me, I will take the advice.” She was asked if she would also meet PM Modi to seek his advice as he was elected with a huge mandate in the general elections. Sharmila, who had in the past, expressed her desire to meet Prime Minister Modi to seek his help in the repeal of the contentious Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act reiterated her demand saying, "It is possible, I will meet because he is the authority concerned who can fulfil my demand."
Suspected supporters of economic blockade burnt down two trucks
Imphal, 02 October 2016 ( Evening News ) : Suspected supporters of economic blockade burnt down two trucks loaded with wheat on National Highway-2 between Khongnem and Karong in Senapati district this morning. The two ill-fated trucks heading towards Imphal from Dimapur bearing registration number NL-01 K-2478 and NL-07 A-4249 were set on fire by the blockade supporters. Senapati police controlled the fire with fire tender. However there was no report of human casualty. The indefinite economic blockade has been called by Contract Basis Appointed Teachers Association Senapati against non regularisation of their service from September 25. The 136 contract teachers were appointed in 2011 by the Govt. They were not also given salaries the last 6 years.
