5th Foundation Day of Kamini Devi Memorial Library
Lack of inculcating the habit of reading is responsible for moving our society backward. This was unanimously resolved by those present at the 5th Foundation Day of Kamini Devi Memorial Library and THAU Information Centre today. It was also resolved to extend public support and cooperation for development of library movement in Manipur. From next year onwards, Kamini Memorial Library and Thau Information Centre is planning to organised interaction programs for students with award winning national and international writers to improve library movement. Chief Librarian of Manipur Central Library, Elangbam Latakishwor lamented on lack of reading books in libraries of Manipur. He further maintained that efforts of State Central library without public support will not be able to bring library movement in the state.
Manipur gets its first Rubber Board Field Station office at Jiribam
Manipur gets its first Rubber Board Field Station office at Jiribam. The Rubber Board Regional office, Silchar today opened the Rubber Board Field Station in the Jiribam sub-division, Imphal East. The inaugural function was held at Municipal Town Hall, Jiribam. Speaking at the function, PG Salim Kumar, Joint Rubber Production Commissioner said, the newly opened Jiribam office would benefit and help the rubber farmers from the state, where the farmers would not be going to Silchar office for any official work. The function was also attended by many rubber farmers and members of Rubber Producer Societies.
Manipur Students Federation wants govt to amend Arms Act
The Manipur Students Federation asked the government to amend the Arms Act under the Indian Constitution to provide arms to the people of the north east region for self defence. Speaking to media persons at MSF office, advisor of Manipuri Students Federation, Th Udoy Luwang condemned the recent attacks on students from North east in various parts of the country. He also urged the government to take action to prevent such attacks and discrimination of students of the region in the future. MSF President Kh Sirajuddin said the recent attacks on the people from the Northeast implies that mainland Indians do not seem to accept Northeast as a part of the country.
Free medical camp held
A free medical camp was organised by Thongju Chingonglei Makhong Development Club in collaboration with Babina Digonostic Centre at the Club premises today. The medical camp that began from 10 am continued till 4 in the afternoon. People consulted in general medicine, paediatrics, orthopaedics and dermatology. They also availed facilities like X-Ray, Ultra-sound and blood test. According to organisers, the primary objective of the camp is timely prevention from diseases and keep them healthy.
Wangkhem Ibomcha has won the 4th Apunba Fitness Centre Transformation Challenge. 38 competitors took part in the challenge to lose maximum weight in three months. Wangkhem Ibomcha won the challenge by losing 26 Kg from 94, Umesh Kumar who stood second position lost 22 kg from 91, and Herojit Loitongbam secured third position losing 26kg from 89. The winners were given a cash prize of Rs 75 thousand, Rs 50 thousand and Rs 30 thousand respectively along with trophies.
8th Manipur Polo International kicks off at Mapal Kangjeibung
The 8th Manipur Polo International kicked off today at Mapal Kangjeibung, the oldest Polo Ground in the world. Chief Minister Okram Ibobi hoisted the opening flag and declared the tournament opened. Renown young and dynamic folk singer Mangka sang the theme song of the edition which also marks the 150th anniversary of the first polo match played outside Manipur at Kolkata. Seven foreign teams and two team from India are taking part in the prestigious tournament.
41st foundation day of Sanaleibak Daily held
Social Welfare Minister Ak Mirabai has stated that the govt has decided to take all necessary steps to strengthen the Directorate of Information and Public Relations. Speaking on the 41st foundation day of Sanaleibak Daily held yesterday at the Banquet hall of Hotel Imphal the minister said the government is trying to set up its office in all the districts. She also said the govt acknowledges the role of entrepreneurs in the development of the state. The minister added that people should recognise the role of the media which is the backbone in a democratic set up. Former Thongju MLA Bijoy Koijam, and several media personalities took part in the function.
Victims of rape say rapists should be hanged in public places
Victims of crimes against women including rape, domestic violence, widows and their families have demanded that rapists should be hanged in public places to prevent occurrence of such crimes. Speaking to media persons at the office of Women Action for Development, Palace Compound yesterday, Manbi said they feel sad and get depressed to witness the increase in rape of children, widows and even disabled women. Nurei from Sora village who is yet to get justice for her sister and brother-in-law who were killed by a mob said crimes are perpetrated against the poor and weaker sections of the society. She said rapists and killers get off scot free in our society. P Captain brother of a girl who was found hanging after her lover allegedly called her out to elope in September 2011 said justice is still a far cry till now. He lamented the delay in filing of charge sheets by the police officers concerned even when Commission for Women recommended to do so.
