Imphal, 10 November 2016 : The demonetisation of 500 and 1,000 Rupee notes since 8 November midnight largely affected the markets in the state. Most of the showrooms in Paona Bazar refused to accept 500 and 1,000 rupee notes today while some shops remained closed. Shopkeepers hailed the sudden decision of the Prime Minister Narendra Modi although daily wage earners cited their problems.
On the other hand, a women vendor at Khwairamband Keithel said she is accepting 500 and 1,000 notes even after its demonetisation. She said there is nothing to panic about as the notes can be exchanged at any bank and post office. A woman shopper said she faced a lot of problems while shopping as shops refused the old notes.
ll the banks in the country are closed today. Those who want to exchange the old notes can deposit it from tomorrow at bank and post office. Depositors need to take Aadhar card and PAN card. ATMs will start functioning from day after tomorrow and new 500 and 2,000 notes can be withdrawn. The government has imposed strict cash withdrawal limits - Rs 2000 daily limits from ATM and Rs 10,000 from bank account in a day and Rs 20,000 in a week.
