Two Naga Civilians Killed in Attack in Senapati

Senapati, September 26: Two Naga civilians were killed and two others injured after suspected Kuki militants allegedly opened fire at Kalenjang village in Senapati district today. The incident reportedly occurred around 2:30 PM while Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand was attending a programme at Don Bosco College, Maram. The deceased have been identified as Rocky of Chaowainamai village and Kumar of Laii Shirafii village, belonging to the Mao and Poumai communities respectively. The injured were identified as Adai Manio and Ashiho Sani, both from the Mao community. According to information received by Impact News, the two victims were shot separately. The incident comes amid recent attacks reported against Naga civilians.

Makui Village Authority Denies Claim of NSCN-IM, ZUF-K Patrols

Kangpokpi, September 26: The Makui Village Authority has denied a social media claim that NSCN-IM and ZUF-K cadres were conducting patrols in the Makui Thebram area of Kangpokpi district. The denial followed a video posted on the Chikim-Te-Awgin Facebook page and later shared by Zalengam Times on September 25. The authority described the claim as false and misleading. It said a CoBRA team had visited Makui Thebram on September 23 to inspect an earlier incident in which Kuki militants were allegedly involved in burning houses. The authority alleged that footage of the CoBRA team’s arrival was recorded and subsequently misrepresented as showing NSCN-IM and ZUF-K cadres patrolling the area.

CM Calls for Upholding Hijam Irawat’s Ideals of Unity

Imphal, September 26: Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand has called on the people of Manipur to uphold the ideals and vision of Lamyanba Hijam Irawat, particularly his efforts to unite people from different communities and parts of the state. He was speaking at the 75th death anniversary observance of Hijam Irawat at the Lamyanba Irawat Statue Complex, Pishumthong Oinam Leikai. Khemchand recalled Irawat’s role in raising his voice against British rule and prevailing social and political conditions from the 1930s. He stressed the importance of carrying forward Irawat’s legacy of unity, harmony and a strong sense of belonging to Manipur. The Chief Minister also paid floral tribute and inaugurated facilities at the complex.

Ibobi Criticises Centre and State Over Continuing Violence

Imphal, September 26: Former Chief Minister and MPCC president Okram Ibobi has criticised the Centre and state governments over continuing violence and killings in Manipur. Speaking at Congress Bhavan in Imphal, Ibobi said repeated incidents involving people from different communities had raised serious concerns about security in the state. He alleged that effective measures had not been taken to ensure lasting security and communal harmony. Ibobi questioned how the safety of the people could be guaranteed without a clear response on the future of the state’s population. He also said the law-and-order situation had deteriorated since 2017, alleging that growing mistrust among communities had contributed to continued violence.

Nambol MLA Highlights Measures on Security and Illegal Immigration

Bishnupur, September 26: Nambol MLA Thounaojam Basantakumar has highlighted measures taken by the BJP-led government to address security concerns and what he described as the influx of illegal immigrants into Manipur. Speaking at a Senior Citizen ADIP and RVY Scheme distribution programme at Utlou, Basantakumar cited the suspension of the Free Movement Regime, implementation of the Inner Line Permit system and accelerated border fencing. He said more than 398 kilometres of border fencing had been taken up and a Cabinet sub-committee had examined population and security issues. According to the MLA, the committee had identified more than 2,000 alleged illegal immigrants for deportation, though implementation was affected by the ongoing conflict.

DESAM Former President Calls for Greater Protection of Civilians

Kakching, September 26: Former DESAM president M. Somorjit Meitei has expressed concern over the continuing killings of civilians amid the ongoing conflict in Manipur. Speaking at a programme organised by Youth of Pangantabi in Pangantabi Chingkha, Kakching district, he said the situation had reached a point where human lives were being lost almost every day. Somorjit was speaking at the unveiling of a memorial honouring late Mayengbam Keronjit Meitei, who was killed during the violence. He called for greater protection of civilians and urged people to remain alert and united in facing the prevailing situation. The programme was organised to remember the deceased and highlight concerns over civilian safety.

Wangoi Students Continue Protest Over Teacher Vacancies

Thoubal, September 26: Students of Wangoi Higher Secondary School have continued their protest demanding the appointment of teachers to fill vacant posts at the institution. The students have been staying on the school campus, including overnight, saying repeated appeals to the Wangoi ZEO Office have not resulted in the appointment of teachers. They said they had also approached Wangoi MLA and Arts and Culture Minister Khuraijam Loken, who assured them that orders for teacher appointments would be issued. However, students claimed no action has followed. They warned that the agitation could be intensified outside the school campus and on the roads if the shortage of teachers is not addressed.

Jiri College Students Oppose Transfer of Two Teachers

Jiribam, September 26: The Jiri College Students’ Union has expressed dissatisfaction over the transfer of two teachers despite the institution already facing a shortage of teaching staff. Speaking at a press briefing at Jiri College, Kadamtala, Students’ Union Magazine Secretary K. Sitaljit said the Botany and Chemistry teachers were transferred on September 21 without replacement. The students’ body urged the authorities to immediately address the shortage and ensure adequate teaching staff at the college. Sitaljit warned that the students could intensify their agitation in coordination with other student organisations in Jiribam if the issue remains unresolved. The union called for prompt intervention to safeguard academic activities at the institution.

MSA Raises Concern Over Condition of Hangul Primary School

Imphal, September 26: The Minorities Students Association, Manipur, has urged authorities to take immediate action over the reported condition of Hangul Awang Leikai Primary School. During an inspection visit today, the organisation’s secretary raised concerns over the school, alleging that it has remained defunct for a long period and that its compound has been turned into a livestock pen. The association expressed concern over the condition of the educational institution and called for appropriate intervention from the authorities. It urged the concerned departments to assess the situation and take necessary measures to restore the school’s functioning and ensure that children in the area have access to proper educational facilities.

High Court Directs Appointment of Regular Home Guard Commandant General

Imphal, September 26: The High Court of Manipur has directed the state government to complete the process of appointing a regular Commandant General of the Manipur Home Guard within three months. Manipur Home Guard Employees Welfare Association President Yanglem Mangi said the association had approached the High Court over the issue. The matter was heard on September 23 before Justice Ahanthem Bimol. According to Mangi, after hearing submissions from counsels representing both sides, the court disposed of the writ petition and related representation and directed the authorities concerned to complete the appointment process within the stipulated three-month period. The association welcomed the court’s direction.

Cracks Found in Retaining Wall Near Mayang Imphal Stadium

Imphal, September 26: Cracks have developed at around four to five locations along a retaining wall being constructed beside the Imphal River near Mayang Imphal Khuman Mini Stadium. Members of MIKHIYA Club, officials of the Water Resources Department and the contractor inspected the site following concerns over the condition of the structure. Former Minister Kh. Ratankumar alleged that the project was being executed by a special contractor even though the department had not yet sanctioned the work and the proposal remained under consideration. He raised concerns over construction quality and urged the department and Chief Minister to inspect the site and take preventive measures, particularly as the area is vulnerable to flooding.

Symposium Held on Life and Works of Elangbam Dinamani Singh

Imphal, September 26: Sahitya Akademi and the Manipuri Sahitya Parishad, Imphal, jointly organised a one-day symposium on the life and works of noted writer Elangbam Dinamani Singh at the DIPR Auditorium today. The programme featured sessions examining Dinamani Singh’s contributions as a fiction writer, critic, translator, poet and playwright. Papers were presented by Makhonmani Mongshaba, Longjam Sangita, Konthoujam Bijalata, Soibam Indrakumar, Y. Kunjabihari and Elangbam Priyobrata. The event also saw the release of “Manipuri Sahitya Volume 202” to mark the birth centenary of noted writer Hijam Guru Singh. An interaction with young Manipuri writers was also held during the programme.

Speaker Assures Action on Tha-Khaisida Theatre Selection Concerns

Imphal, September 26: Manipur Assembly Speaker Thokchom Satyabrata has assured that he will take up concerns raised over the selection process of 25 artiste groups for the upcoming Tha-Khaisida Manipuri Theatre fortnight. He gave the assurance while attending the closing ceremony of the 40-day Bisnupriya Gidi Paduka Theatre Workshop organised by Brahmapur Kala Sangam at Rupmahal Theatre, Imphal. Responding to concerns raised by State Kala Akademi Awardee Kh. Biswamitra, the Speaker said he would apprise the relevant authorities of the matter. Satyabrata also highlighted the importance of theatre and performing arts in preserving cultural traditions and imparting moral values, and assured continued support to artistes.

IMA General Practitioners’ East Zone Conference Begins

Imphal, September 26: The two-day IMA College of General Practitioners East Zone Conference began at IMA House, Lamphelpat, today under the theme “Modern Family Medicine: A Patient-Centred Care.” The conference was attended by IMA Manipur Vice President Dr L. Ranjit, IMA CGP Headquarters Secretary Dr Amutha Karunanidhi, IMA Manipur State Secretary Dr Akoijam Ibohal and IMA CGP Faculty Manipur Director Dr James Elangbam, along with delegates from the Northeast and other states. IMA CGP Faculty Manipur State Secretary Dr K. Dingo said the academic unit was established in September 2020 and has organised programmes since 2023. The faculty currently offers fellowships in Family Medicine, Primary Care Echocardiography and Diabetology.

Congress OBC Department Holds ‘OBC Haq Ka Hoonkar’ Programme

Imphal, September 26: The MPCC OBC Department organised a one-day orientation programme titled “OBC Haq Ka Hoonkar” at Congress Bhawan, Imphal, today. Congress Legislature Party leader K. Meghachandra said protecting the rights and entitlements of people belonging to the OBC category, as provided under the Constitution, is essential. He stressed that benefits and rights meant for eligible OBC communities should reach all intended beneficiaries. Meghachandra called for efforts to ensure that people entitled to constitutional protections and benefits are not deprived of them. The programme focused on awareness of OBC rights and entitlements and the need to ensure proper access to benefits meant for eligible communities.

Langban Chara Tamba Ceremony Held at Sanamahi Temple

Imphal, September 26: The Langban Chara Tamba ceremony, an important religious observance of the Meitei community, was held at Lainingthou Sanamahi Shanglen today. People from different parts of the state gathered at the shrine at Khongbal Uphong Yumpham to offer Langban Chara to deceased elders and family members. Offerings were also made at the shrines of Lainingthou Sanamahi and Ima Leinarel Shidabi. The Temple Board arranged meals for around 500 people attending the ceremony. Visitors appreciated the board’s arrangements but also raised concerns over limited parking space at the venue. The annual observance brought together families and devotees to pay respects to deceased elders and relatives.

Geetranjan Named Match Observer for India-West Indies T20I

Lucknow, September 26: Manipur Cricket Association Secretary Lairenjam Geetranjan has been appointed by the Board of Control for Cricket in India as Match Observer for the first match of the five-match T20 International series between India and the West Indies. The match is scheduled to be played at Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow on October 6 at 7 PM. Manipur Cricket Association President Nongthombam Zico congratulated Geetranjan on the appointment and expressed confidence in his performance. The assignment places the MCA secretary in an official role for the opening match of the international T20 series.
