Petroleum Drivers Stage Sit-In Over Safety and Welfare

Imphal, September 12: Members of the All Manipur Petroleum Product Drivers Association staged a sit-in at the Malom Oil Depot today, pressing for measures to ensure the safety and welfare of petroleum tanker drivers. The association warned that its steering-down agitation would continue until its demands are addressed. Protesters highlighted difficulties faced by drivers transporting essential petroleum products along the National Highways amid the economic blockade called by the UNC. They alleged that security personnel forced drivers to proceed through the blockade, resulting in an incident involving assault on drivers and damage to vehicles. The association demanded a departmental inquiry, action against those responsible, compensation for injured drivers and damaged vehicles, and safe passage for essential commodity vehicles.

Petroleum Tanker Driver Injured During Noney Attack Receives Assistance

Imphal, September 12: IOCL Retail Outlet Dealers have provided financial assistance to petroleum tanker driver Khumukcham Sanamatum, who was injured during an attack amid the economic blockade at Noney. Sanamatum was travelling as part of a petroleum convoy escorted by the CRPF from Jiribam to Imphal on the afternoon of September 10. According to the report, blockade enforcers attacked the convoy when it reached Noney, damaging several trucks and injuring drivers. Sanamatum sustained critical head injuries and is currently undergoing treatment at Raj Medicity Hospital at North AOC in Imphal. The financial assistance was extended to support his treatment following the incident.

Three JFD Volunteers Released on PR Bonds

Imphal, September 12: Three Campaign for Just and Fair Delimitation, or JFD, volunteers arrested by Imphal East Police for allegedly locking government offices were released today after being produced before a Magistrate. The three were produced before Imphal East District Magistrate P. Praveen Kumar at his residence in Haobam Marak, Imphal West. They were released on personal recognisance bonds of Rs. 30,000 each. Those released were Saka Maring, President of the Working Committee of CNPO, Chandel and JFD spokesperson; Seram Surjit, Co-Convenor of All Kongba Road United Clubs Organisation; and JFD volunteer N. Govin. They later received a reception at the JFD camp at Soibam Leikai Wangkhei Khunou. JFD volunteers said the agitation would continue.

DM University PhD Scholars’ Hunger Strike Enters Day Four

Imphal, September 12: The indefinite hunger strike by five PhD scholars of DM University demanding release of their pending stipends entered its fourth day today. The agitation was launched on September 9 under the banner of the DM University Students’ Union. The protest intensified after a female scholar participating in the hunger strike fell unconscious yesterday afternoon and was admitted to JNIMS Hospital. She received treatment and was discharged last night. Despite the incident, the five scholars are continuing their hunger strike. They are demanding that the university release the pending stipends of PhD scholars. The agitation will continue until their demand for payment of the outstanding stipends is addressed.

Minister Calls for Greater Support to Promote Manipur’s Cultural Heritage

Imphal, September 12: Art and Culture Minister Khuraijam Loken has stressed the need for greater government support to promote and develop Manipur’s rich art and cultural heritage. He was speaking at the inaugural programme of the 16th “Unnou Konde Hunba” and a refresher course-cum-training programme for Amaiba, Amaibi and Pena artistes organised by Uttra Shanglen, Sana Konung, today. Loken said the Department of Art and Culture has only around 120 to 130 employees and receives less than Rs. 50 crore in the state budget. He questioned how the state’s cultural heritage could be developed with limited resources. He said efforts are underway to complete and inaugurate Manipur’s Cultural University at the earliest. The Minister also highlighted the government’s artiste pension scheme and proposed additional schemes for artistes below 60.

Sardar Patel’s 150th Birth Anniversary Observed in Imphal

Imphal, September 12: The Relief Centre for the Welfare of Differently Abled Persons, Manipur, observed the 150th birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel at JN Dance Academy in Imphal today. Organised under the Ministry of Culture, the programme was held on the theme “Unity is Strength.” Speaking on the occasion, Langthabal MLA Karam Shyam stressed the need for politicians and bureaucrats to understand people’s aspirations and work accordingly for social progress. He also called for unity among different communities and urged people to live together peacefully without creating divisions. The MLA recalled Patel’s contribution to the integration of India and said his leadership and commitment to national unity should inspire the present generation. Traditional dance and music performances were also presented during the programme.

Two-Day International Seminar on Manipuri Literature Begins

Imphal, September 12: A two-day international seminar on Manipuri literature, organised by Leimarol Khorjeikol, or LEIKOL, began today at the Conference Hall of the Institute of Cooperative Management at Lamphelpat. Wangkhei MLA Thangjam Arunkumar, LEIKOL President Ch. Subadani, ICCR Ministry of External Affairs North East Zonal Director Dr. Munish Ningthoujam, ICM Director Dr. Kh. Ramananda and prominent figures from Manipuri literature attended the inaugural programme. LEIKOL Secretary G.A. Ghanapriya said the organisation was founded on October 3, 2001, at the residence of renowned writer late M.K. Binodini, its founding president. She said LEIKOL has completed 25 years and that the seminar seeks to examine the present state of Manipuri literature in Manipur and beyond. Writers from India and abroad are presenting papers online.

Third National Lok Adalat Held Across Manipur

Imphal, September 12: The Third National Lok Adalat of 2026 was held across all District Courts in Manipur today. In Imphal East and Imphal West, the Lok Adalat was conducted at the Lamphel Court Complex through three benches, jointly organised by the Manipur State Legal Services Authority and District Legal Services Authority. Bench One heard cases involving IndusInd Bank, Slice, Manipur Rural Bank and TVS, along with cases from Imphal East Court. Bench Two dealt with cases involving Punjab National Bank, UCO Bank, SBI and Shija Hospital, besides cases from Imphal West Court. Bench Three handled MACT and other insurance cases, along with matters involving Bank of Baroda, Central Bank and Bank of India.

National Lok Adalat Conducted in Chandel

Chandel, September 12: The District Legal Services Authority, Chandel, conducted the Third National Lok Adalat of 2026 at the Chief Judicial Magistrate, Chandel Court Complex today. District and Sessions Judge, Chandel, and Chairman of DLSA Chandel, Alek Muivah, served as the Bench Chairperson. Legal Aid Defence Counsel Deputy Chief Kh. Jacky Lucy and CRISIL Foundation Chandel Centre Manager Songsir Felix participated as members. The National Lok Adalat is aimed at facilitating the settlement of eligible cases through an alternative dispute resolution mechanism. The programme formed part of the nationwide observance of the Third National Lok Adalat of 2026, which was conducted across District Courts in Manipur today.

Security Forces Recover Large Cache of Arms and Ammunition

Churachandpur, September 12: A combined team of Churachandpur District Police and the 2 Jammu & Kashmir Light Infantry recovered a large cache of arms and ammunition during an operation in the general area of Thangjing Ridge yesterday. According to a police report, the operation was launched based on intelligence inputs regarding the presence of illegal arms and ammunition in areas adjoining Nalon and Thinghijang villages. The recovered items included two 82-mm mortars, one locally made rocket, one MP5 automatic rifle with scope, four 9-mm carbines with magazines, two pistols with magazines, four single-barrel rifles and four bolt-action rifles. Security forces also recovered mortar bombs, Pumpis and shells, a radio set, bulletproof jacket harnesses and combat boots.

Myanmar National Arrested With 154 Grams of Heroin

Churachandpur, September 12: A joint team of Behiang Police and 37 Assam Rifles arrested a Myanmar national with 154 grams of heroin powder near Border Pillar Number 41 along the Indo-Myanmar border on September 11. The arrested person has been identified as 36-year-old Haukimmang, son of Khamsuanlian, from Vanglai Village in Myanmar. According to the report, security personnel seized 11 soap cases containing a total of 154 grams of heroin from his possession. The arrest was made during the joint operation near the international border. Further legal proceedings in connection with the seizure and arrest are expected to follow as per applicable law.

International Seminar on Kawasaki Disease Begins in Imphal

Imphal, September 12: The two-day 9th National Conference of the Indian Society of Kawasaki Disease began in Imphal today, focusing on awareness, early detection and treatment of Kawasaki Disease. The conference is being held at Classic Grande in Chingmeirong under the theme “Advancing Frontiers in Kawasaki Disease: Pathways to Precision Therapy.” It is organised by the Indian Society of Kawasaki Disease with support from the Paediatric Association of Manipur. Organising Secretary Dr. Nameirakpam Johnson, Consultant Paediatric Rheumatologist at JNIMS, said the disease is not very common in Manipur but delayed diagnosis and treatment can damage coronary arteries and potentially cause heart attacks in children. Experts from Japan and different states of India are participating in the conference.

ISNEZCON 2026 Underway in Imphal

Imphal, September 12: The three-day Indian Society of Nephrology East Zone Conference, ISNEZCON 2026, is underway at Sangai Hall of Hotel Imphal in North AOC. Organised under the theme “Kidney Health For All: Equitable and Sustainable Nephrology,” the conference began yesterday. It is being organised by the ISNEZCON 2026 Organising Committee under the Manipur Nephrology Forum and Department of Nephrology, RIMS. Speaking at the event, Babina Group of Companies Chairman and Managing Director Dr. Thangjam Dhabali highlighted the financial and emotional burden faced by kidney patients, who often require repeated hospital visits, regular check-ups and prolonged treatment. More than 200 delegates from outside Manipur are participating in the conference.

World First Aid Day Observed at L. Sanoi College

Bishnupur, September 12: L. Sanoi College, Nambol, observed World First Aid Day 2026 through its Internal Quality Assurance Cell today. The programme was organised jointly with the Indian Red Cross Society Manipur State Branch and the IRCS Bishnupur District Branch. The event was held on the theme “First Aid For A Safer Tomorrow.” Speaking on the occasion, Bishnupur Deputy Commissioner and IRCS Bishnupur District Branch President Pooja Elangbam highlighted the importance of providing first aid during medical emergencies. IRCS Manipur State Branch Chairman Narendra Ningomba and College Principal Prof. W. Jyotirmoy also attended the programme. The event focused on the importance of timely first-aid response and awareness for safer communities.

Lainingthou Sanamahi Temple Board Pays Tribute to Martyrs

Imphal, September 12: The Lainingthou Sanamahi Temple Board today paid tribute to those who sacrificed their lives to protect Manipur’s integrity and unity by offering Langbal Chara Tamba at Lainingthou Sanamahi Shanglen in Imphal Haying Khongbal Uphong Yumpham. Keirao MLA Lourembam Rameshwor and office-bearers of the Temple Board led the ceremony. The event honoured ancestors associated with the promotion of the Sanamahi faith and martyrs of the violence that began on May 3, 2023. Speaking on the occasion, MLA Rameshwor urged people to remember those who lost their lives, examine the causes of the conflict and remain united in protecting Manipur’s integrity.

Etinpham Founder President Calls for Greater Awareness of Sanamahism

Imphal, September 12: Etinpham Founder President L. Budhi Meetei has advocated Sanamahism and stressed that following a single religious path would strengthen unity and courage in society. Speaking to the media at the Lainingthou Sanamahi Temple Board at 1st Manipur Rifles today, Budhi said Meitei society is currently uncertain about whether its religious practices are rooted in Hinduism or European traditions. He said Sanamahism had once been on the verge of extinction but that the present generation is gradually returning to the faith. Budhi said Etinpham was formed during this transition with the objective of spreading awareness about Sanamahism in Manipur.

Saikul MLA Distributes Welfare Scheme Benefits to Beneficiaries

Kangpokpi, September 12: Saikul MLA Kimneo Hangshing distributed items under various government welfare schemes to beneficiaries in the constituency today. The distribution programme was organised by the Sadar Hills Autonomous District Council at Saikul. During the programme, the MLA handed over waste bins, desks and stationery items, among other materials, to school authorities and other beneficiaries. The distribution forms part of efforts to provide assistance and benefits under different government welfare schemes to eligible people and institutions in the constituency. The programme was attended by beneficiaries and representatives of institutes.

Northeast Students Hold Candlelight Vigil for Chongtham Vikram

Vadodara, September 12: Students from the Northeast studying at Central University of Gujarat in Vadodara held a candlelight vigil last evening in tribute to Manipuri pioneer rock guitarist Chongtham Vikram, who died following an alleged incident of racial violence in Delhi. A large number of Northeast students participated in the vigil and observed a two-minute silence in memory of the departed musician. The gathering paid homage to Vikram and expressed solidarity with his family and community following his death. The vigil was held as students remembered the Manipuri musician and raised concerns over the circumstances surrounding his death.

Protest Held in Guwahati Seeking Justice for Chongtham Vikram

Guwahati, September 12: A protest was held near the statue of Bir Tikendrajit at Manipuri Basti in Guwahati, demanding punishment for those responsible for the death of Manipuri musician Chongtham Vikram in Delhi. The protest was organised under the initiative of Rajbari Athletic Club, Manipuri Basti, Guwahati. Participants observed a two-minute silence as a mark of respect to the departed musician. The protest came amid continuing expressions of concern and demands for justice following the alleged assault on Vikram in Delhi. Participants called for appropriate action against those responsible for the incident.

Seven Manipur Athletes Selected for Asian Games

Imphal, September 12: Seven athletes from Manipur, comprising four women and three men, will represent India in rowing, canoeing and kayaking at the 20th Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, scheduled from September 19 to October 4. In rowing, Haobijam Tendenthoi will compete in the Women’s Four Team 1 event, while Narengbam Laxmi, a Physical Education Teacher with the YAS Department, will serve as coach. In women’s canoeing and kayaking, Phairenbam Soniya will compete in the 500-metre K-2 and K-4 events, Khwairakpam Dhanamanjuri in the 500-metre K-4, and Leichombam Neha in the 500-metre C-2. In the men’s category, Philem Gyaneshwor, Oinam Arjun and Laitonjam Naocha will compete in respective 500-metre events.

Manipur Wins Eight More Medals at National Aquatic Championship

Indore, September 12: Manipur secured eight more medals at the ongoing 42nd Sub-Junior and 52nd Junior National Aquatic Championship at the IDA International Swimming Pool in Indore under the Swimming Federation of India. A. Benhar won gold in the Junior Boys Group 2 Platform event with a score of 320.25 points. H. Bonson also claimed gold in the Boys Group 2 one-metre Springboard event with 273 points, while S. Korounganba won bronze with 262.80 points. Ch. Tomthin won silver and P. Champion bronze in the Boys Group 3 three-metre Springboard event. The pair of S. Korounganba and H. Bonson won silver in the Boys Group 3 three-metre Synchronised Board event, while Lanchenbi Rajkumari added bronze. Five divers from Manipur are participating.

India to Face China in Junior Women’s Hockey Asia Cup Final

Moqi City, September 12: India will face China in the final of the Junior Women’s Hockey Asia Cup tomorrow after both teams won their respective semi-final matches today. In the first semi-final played at Moqi City in China, India defeated South Korea 5-1. In the second semi-final, hosts China registered a 6-0 victory over Japan. The Indian squad is led by Manipur’s Khaidem Shileima Chanu and comprises 20 players, including two goalkeepers, five defenders, five midfielders, six forwards and two alternate players. The final between India and China is scheduled for September 13 at 4:30 PM. India will now look to complete its campaign with the continental title.
