Four Apprehended, One Rescued in Alleged Human Trafficking Case

Imphal, September 10: A combined team of Social Welfare Department officials and police apprehended four persons, including a mother and her son, in connection with an alleged human trafficking operation and rescued one person during a late-night operation on Wednesday. According to Impact News sources, the team led by Social Welfare Director Sheikh Abdul Hakim conducted the operation at a specific location after receiving information about alleged trafficking activities. Director Abdul said trafficking in persons is a serious offence punishable under law. He also said reports of minors allegedly trafficked to other states are being verified, with rescue operations to be undertaken based on the findings.

Congress Demands Action Against Home Minister Over Leilon Vaiphei Case

Imphal, September 10: The Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee has demanded action against Home Minister Govindas Konthoujam, alleging that he misled the Assembly regarding the killing of six Naga civilians at Leilon Vaiphei. Speaking to the media at Congress Bhavan, MPCC Vice President Hareshwor Goswami said the recent suspension of Police Constable Thangginlian Vaiphei and the departmental inquiry against him contradict the Home Minister’s earlier Assembly statement that there was no evidence against the constable. Goswami urged the Assembly Speaker to examine the matter under the rules, saying it raises questions over the government’s credibility. He also sought clarification regarding the Chief Minister’s statement on the village chief’s whereabouts.

JFD Announces Government Office Closure Protest From Tomorrow

Imphal, September 10: The Campaign for Just & Fair Delimitation has announced a government office closure protest from tomorrow, demanding that the Chief Minister and Home Minister visit New Delhi and press the Government of India to implement NRC updation in Manipur with 1951 as the base year. Speaking at the JFD camp in Soibam Leikai Wangkhei Khunou, Imphal Committee Convenor Jeetendra Ningombam urged employees of Central and state government departments to refrain from attending offices. However, employees engaged in essential services, including education, healthcare, fire services, banking, postal services, water supply, courts, agriculture and electricity, have been exempted from the agitation.

Eight KLA Cadres Remanded in Police Custody Till September 14

Kangpokpi, September 10: Eight alleged cadres of the proscribed Kuki Liberation Army have been remanded to police custody until September 14 after being arrested with sophisticated weapons from the Gampum village area. The arrests were made by a joint team of Manipur Police, CoBRA, CRPF, Mahila personnel and RAF. The accused were produced before the Judicial Magistrate First Class, Imphal East, on September 8, following which police custody remand was granted. The eight include one person from Ukhrul, two from Churachandpur, one from Chandel and four from Kangpokpi. Meanwhile, Impact News has learnt that the NIA has filed an application seeking the formal arrest of the eight persons in connection with a case taken up by the agency.

CM’s Proposed Luangkao Visit on September 12 Cancelled

Tamenglong, September 10: Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand’s proposed visit to Luangkao village in Tamenglong district on September 12 has been cancelled. The visit was scheduled to include a visit to the birthplace of Rani Gaidinliu. The cancellation was conveyed through an official order issued today by Secretary to the Chief Minister, Manipur, Neilenthang Telien. The proposed visit had earlier drawn opposition from the Working Committee of the Joint Tribes Council Manipur, which had announced a boycott over the unresolved case involving six Liangmai Naga men allegedly abducted and killed at Leilon Vaiphei village. The latest order formally confirms the cancellation of the Chief Minister’s proposed programme in Luangkao.

DMU PhD Scholars’ Hunger Strike Enters Second Day

Imphal, September 10: The indefinite hunger strike by PhD scholars of Dhanamanjuri University demanding release of their withheld stipends entered its second day today. Five scholars are continuing the protest in front of the University Administrative Block under the banner of the Dhanamanjuri University Students’ Union. DMUSU Research Representative Sanasam Lamdaiba said the scholars have been demanding payment of their pending stipends for a long time, with several facing financial difficulties because of the delay. He said some former research scholars had completed their work and left the university without receiving their stipends. Lamdaiba added that earlier assurances of payment by the first week of September have not been fulfilled.

Wabagai Students Threaten Agitation Over Vacant Posts

Kakching, September 10: The Students’ Union of Wabagai Higher Secondary School has threatened to launch various forms of agitation, including a class boycott, if vacant posts of the Principal and subject teachers are not filled by September 15. The students raised the issue during a protest at the school gate today, demanding immediate appointments. School Union Finance Secretary Rani Moijing said the school was upgraded to Higher Secondary status in 2021 and currently has around 300 students, but vacancies remain in subjects including Geography, Physics, Anthropology and Economics. She said the posts of Principal and Vice Principal have also remained vacant since April. The students claimed the shortage has affected academic activities.

Kebol High School Students, Teachers Protest Against Monetary Demands

Imphal, September 10: Students and teachers of Kebol High School staged a sit-in at the school gate in Sagolband Tera, demanding an end to what they described as excessive monetary demands imposed on schools and teachers. Protesters displayed placards calling for educational institutions and teachers to be free from such demands and urging all concerned to allow students to pursue their studies peacefully. Senior teacher Sobita Laishram said repeated monetary demands have made it difficult for teachers to perform their duties without pressure. She appealed to all concerned to stop such demands and ensure that schools remain a free and peaceful environment for both teachers and students.

KCP (PWG) MC Unification Warns NG Mani College Staff Over Appointments

Imphal, September 10: The proscribed KCP (PWG) MC Unification has issued a warning to the governing body, teaching and non-teaching staff of NG Mani College, Khurai Chairenthong, over alleged violations of recruitment rules. In a press statement, the group’s PRO Chingkheinganba asked those allegedly appointed in violation of recruitment rules to submit themselves within five days. The statement claimed that one Sagolsem Poireiton, who completed a master’s degree in Computer Science, was appointed to the Mathematics Department through an order issued during the tenure of former Governing Body Secretary Khumabam Sanajaoba. The group further alleged that five other staff members were appointed in violation of recruitment procedures and accused the college head clerk of financial irregularities.

World Suicide Prevention Day Observed in Imphal

Imphal, September 10: The National Mental Health Programme under NHM Manipur and the Directorate of Health Services observed World Suicide Prevention Day 2026 at the Indian Medical Association Hall in Lamphelpat. This year marks the final year of the three-year global campaign, “Changing the Narrative on Suicide,” which began in 2024, with the 2026 call to action being “Start the Conversation.” Director of Health Services Dr. N. Hemantakumar stressed the importance of listening to people experiencing emotional distress and understanding their concerns. He said emotional struggles should not be dismissed, even when expressed casually or jokingly. He also highlighted the role of meaningful communication in suicide prevention and said timely support can help save lives.

Education Commissioner Calls for Greater Communication on Suicide Prevention

Imphal, September 10: Commissioner of Education (S) Ningthoujam Geoffrey has stressed that precious human lives should not be lost to suicide and urged people to communicate regularly with those facing difficulties. Speaking at a World Suicide Prevention Day programme at Shija Hospital in Langol, Geoffrey said life cannot be recreated despite advances in medical science. He encouraged people to understand the problems of those experiencing distress and guide them towards professional help instead of judging them. The programme was jointly organised by Shija Hospitals and the Indian Psychiatric Society, Manipur State Branch. Prizes were also distributed to winners of an essay competition focused on suicide prevention.

Imphal, September 10: Shija Academy of Health Sciences CMD Dr. Khundongbam Palin has advocated introducing meditation from childhood as a means of improving mental health and supporting suicide prevention. Speaking during a World Suicide Prevention Day programme, Dr. Palin said meditation has been scientifically shown to help reduce stress. He suggested that its benefits should be promoted more widely, particularly in Manipur, which is facing various social challenges. Dr. Palin also proposed incorporating meditation into the school curriculum from the primary level. He said developing the practice from an early age could contribute to better mental well-being and potentially help in preventing suicide by improving people’s ability to manage stress and emotional difficulties.

Spastic Society of Manipur Observes World Suicide Prevention Day

Imphal, September 10: The Spastic Society of Manipur observed World Suicide Prevention Day at the Manipur University campus today. Speaking on the sidelines of the programme, Spastic Society of Manipur Secretary Dr. Laishram Tokendra Ricky stressed the importance of raising awareness and encouraging people to start conversations about mental health and suicide prevention. NEST Programme Lead T. Chinmuanniang spoke on responsible reporting of suicide, stressing that journalists should avoid describing methods, sensationalising incidents, glorifying suicide or using dramatic visuals. She urged media professionals to highlight that suicide is preventable and provide information on available support services. The programme concluded with an interaction session involving journalists. The organisers emphasised the role of responsible media reporting in raising awareness, reducing harmful narratives and encouraging people experiencing emotional distress to seek appropriate help and support.

CM Visits Family of Late Musician Chongtham Vikram

Imphal, September 10: Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand visited the residence of late renowned guitarist Chongtham Vikram at Lourung Purel Leikai in Thangmeiband and shared the grief of the bereaved family. The Chief Minister met family members and assured them that justice would be delivered in the murder case. He also said those involved in the crime would face befitting punishment. Third National Lok Adalat Scheduled for September 12

Imphal, September 10: The third session of the National Lok Adalat 2026 will be held at the Lamphel Court Complex on September 12 from 10 am to 4 pm. According to a notice issued by the Manipur Legal Services Authority, proceedings will be conducted through three separate benches. The benches will take up a range of cases involving courts, banks, insurance and other institutions. The first bench will deal with cases involving Imphal East Court and several banking and financial institutions. The second bench will take up Imphal West Court cases and matters involving Punjab National Bank, UCO Bank, SBI and Shija Hospital. The third bench will handle MACT and insurance matters along with cases involving Bank of Baroda, Central Bank and Bank of India.

MoRD Officials Review Rural Development Schemes in Churachandpur

Churachandpur, September 10: Deputy Director General of the Ministry of Rural Development Altaf Hussain Haji and MoRD Deputy Director Rajesh Kumar visited Churachandpur and reviewed various rural development and welfare schemes being implemented in the district. They were received by Deputy Commissioner Krishna Kumar, who chaired a review meeting at the DC conference hall. Officials discussed developmental works under rural development and welfare schemes. Manipuri Filmmaker’s Debut Film to Screen at Venice International Film Festival

Venice, September 10: Manipuri filmmaker Tenzing Pukhrambam’s debut film, “The Nightmare of Bembi,” is set to be screened at the 83rd Venice International Film Festival 2026. The film will feature in the special showcase “The Indian Spotlight” at Palazzo del Cinema’s Sala Pasinetti in Venice Lido. Written, directed and produced by Tenzing Pukhrambam, the film stars Pretty Laishram as Bembi, alongside Ratan Mayanglambam, Amit Kshetrimayum, Valentina Sagapam, Ragini, Zuleyka Naorem and Priyalakshmi Langpoklakpam. The film will represent the Bharat International Film Festival Organisation at the festival. It was among 11 Indian films selected following a selection process conducted after a gap of around 10 years.

Manipur University Students’ Documentary Selected for Kerala Film Festival

Imphal, September 10: “Khongjomnubi,” a documentary film made by students of the Department of Mass Communication at Manipur University, has been selected for the Short Documentary Competition Section of the 18th International Documentary and Short Film Festival of Kerala. The documentary was produced as part of the department’s academic curriculum. Directed by students of the 2023–2025 Mass Communication batch, the film is based on the life of veteran athlete Ibemhal. The selection gives the student filmmakers an opportunity to showcase their work at an international documentary and short film platform in Kerala. The film reflects the department’s efforts to combine academic learning with practical filmmaking and documentary production.

Man Caught Allegedly Extorting Money From Vehicles Along NH-37

Noney, September 10: A 30-year-old man was arrested by a team of A/66 CRPF for allegedly extorting money from transport vehicles along National Highway-37 near Rengpang Market in Noney district. According to Manipur Police, the accused has been identified as Shimreingam Shimray, son of late Joseph, a resident of Mapum village in Ukhrul district. He was allegedly caught while collecting money from transport vehicles near Milestone Number 117, in the area of Chainage Number 111. A .32 pistol with a magazine, six live rounds, Rs 33,300 in cash and a walkie-talkie set were seized from him. Further legal proceedings are expected in connection with the alleged extortion.

Two Arrested With 2.43 Kg Brown Sugar in Imphal East

Imphal, September 10: A combined team of the Anti-Narcotics Task Force, Imphal East District Police, CRPF and YADAM seized 2 kilograms and 43 grams of suspected brown sugar during an anti-narcotics operation near Kongba Irong Bridge. Police said two persons were arrested in connection with the seizure. They have been identified as 30-year-old Md. Zamil Hussain and 30-year-old Syed Shaoib, both residents of Lilong Turel Ahanbi Mathak Leikai in Thoubal district. The team also seized a Maruti Suzuki Swift car allegedly used by the accused and four mobile phones. The operation forms part of ongoing efforts by security agencies to prevent the transportation and distribution of illegal drugs in the state.

Woman Arrested With 112 Grams of Brown Sugar in Churachandpur

Churachandpur, September 10: Churachandpur District Police have arrested a woman with 112 grams of suspected brown sugar from Thingkangphai village. Police identified the arrested woman as 35-year-old Manglo Ngailianching, also known as Matei. She is the daughter of Khamsuanmang of S. Molnom village in Chandel district. The arrest was made as part of the district police’s ongoing operations against the illegal drug trade. The seized substance has been identified by police as brown sugar. Further investigation is expected to determine the source and intended destination of the contraband. The case adds to a series of anti-narcotics operations being conducted across different districts of Manipur.

Speaker Condoles Demise of Social Activist Saikhom Kamlakanta Singha

10-Km Cycle Race Held Under Khelo India SPANDAN

Imphal, September 10: The Sports Authority of India, Imphal, in collaboration with 109 Battalion CRPF, organised a 10-kilometre cycle race under Khelo India SPANDAN — Sports for Peace and Development Across the Nation. The event aimed to promote fitness, peace and a healthy society. Padma Shri awardee Oinam Bembem flagged off the race from Kangla Western Gate. Around 100 cyclists participated, covering the Tiddim Road before returning to the starting point. Athokpam Bickey secured first place, followed by Angom Yaiphaba in second and Th. Gyananda in third. A 72-year-old cyclist was also felicitated by the CRPF for participating in the event.

Around 150 Tenggol Members Donate Blood in Kakching

Kakching, September 10: Around 150 members of Tenggol from 13 different Arambai Tenggol units in Kakching district donated blood during a blood donation camp held at Naodam Community Hall in Kakching Makha Leikai. The camp was organised jointly by the Arambai Tenggol General Headquarters, its medical team and 13 AT units in Kakching district, in collaboration with the Department of Blood Transfusion Medicine, RIMS, Imphal. The initiative was aimed at supporting blood availability and encouraging voluntary donation among members of the community. The participation of around 150 donors from different units marked a significant contribution to the blood donation drive.

Nine Manipuri Taekwondo Players to Compete at World Championships

Chuncheon, September 10: Nine taekwondo players from Manipur will represent India in different categories at the Chuncheon 2026 World Taekwondo Poomsae Championships. The championship is scheduled to be held from September 16 to 20 at the Songam Sports Town Air Dome in Chuncheon, Republic of Korea. The participation of the nine players from Manipur adds to the state’s representation at international sporting events. The athletes will compete in their respective Poomsae categories during the five-day championship. The event will bring together competitors from different countries, providing the Manipuri players an opportunity to compete on the international stage and showcase their skills in the discipline.
